This is my India, is it yours too?

The Idea of India is expressed well in this essay followed by 5 videos reflecting our ethos of inclusion and pluralism.
…………………………………….

In my pluralistic India, each one of us makes an effort to see that every Indian feels secure about his/her language, religion, culture, food, clothes, head coverings, ethnicity, race, sexual, political or other uniqueness. We have practiced respecting the otherness of the other for nearly 5000 years; indeed, that is my pluralistic India and qualifies for us to have a seat among the most civilized nations. Most Indians believe that each one of us should have the freedom to eat, drink, clothe, believe, and whatever brings happiness to us, without knocking other’s freedom. What is happening since 2014 is an aberration and will disappear soon. Goodness and the Truth always triumph.

There are several maps of India.

Chakravarti Rajagopalachari was the last Governor-General of India and expressed civility in terms of a woman walking the streets of Chennai any time of the day and night and feel secure about it.  Prophet Muhammad communicated similar thoughts 1400 years ago, where he envisioned a woman going from Medina to Damascus and back safe and sound.

A few among all our groups don’t follow our own faith, they simply don’t get the faith, and culture and resort to thievery, loot, murder, terrorism, rioting, rapes, lynching, infanticide and other evils that destroy the fabric of our society. Fortunately, a majority of each one of our groups regardless of religion or ethnicity go about living their lives and don’t even bother others. We should build upon what the majority of our people seek rather than the few who do not follow any principles.

The India that I have known is where everyone felt secure, day or night, and anywhere on the motherland. No one was afraid of the other, and no one gave tensions to fellow Indians.

As a nation, collectively we are Adivasis, Atheists, Bahais, Bos, Buddhists, Christians, Dalits, Hindus, Jains, Jewish, Muslim, Sikhs, Tribals, Zoroastrians, and every possible grouping. We are Brown, Black, White, Yellow and maybe green with envy, magar phir bhi dil hai Hindustani ( we are all called Indians when we are traveling anywhere on the earth).

Our Motherland is collectively represented by every race, nationality, ethnicity, language, culture, and religion. We see God as one, none and many; and in every form; male, female, genderless and non-existent, being and non-being, nameless and with innumerable names.

Indeed, we should brag about our nation, we are the first nation on the earth where more than three faiths flourished some 2000 years ago. We are proud of our heritage – a multi-faith, multicultural, multi-regional and multi-linguistic society, the first nation of its kind,  where we have come to accept and respect every which way people have lived their lives. For over 5000 years, India has been a beacon of pluralism – it has embraced Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Baha’i and Zoroastrianism to include in the array of the indigenous religions; Hinduism, Tribal traditions, Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism.

We may want to consciously start thinking and acting as one people, one people within a nation and a community and one people globally. It’s like home when we are conflict-free.  I do hope each one of us purges any bias towards the other, there is joy in being free from ill-will. Try to be free from this day forward… free from anything that prevents you from being a part of the whole.

Our combined philosophies believe in one world; Hinduism describes the world as Vasudaiva Kutumbukum, the whole world is one family, the idea of Ek Onkar(one) in Sikhism, you are all created from the same couple as Quraan puts it and Jesus embraced everyone regardless of who anyone was… similar philosophies are grounded in all our religions; from Atheism to Zoroastrianism.

On this day, and every day from here forward, make a pledge to yourselves to talk about in terms of “I am an Indian” – and not Malayalee, Gujarati, Bengali, Punjabi…. or Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Isaee. Don’t expect others to jump and say the same, give them the time and if you are consistent for at least a year, you will see others emulating you.

We have a solid culture of Pluralism, no group or individual can destroy our 5000-year old sabhyata, they may hurt our Motherland for a short while, but we will bounce back. Bad governance has never lasted and will be condemned forever. It is a lesson to bad governors to not earn peoples disgust but goodwill. If India’s current government does nothing and focuses on the economy, and quit experimenting with demonetization, GST, 370, and CAA, India will be back on her track.  They need to quit promoting the Hindu-Muslim non-sense and focus on producing jobs and building the economy and removing fears of any kind among all Indians.

What is Patriotism? It is bringing security to every Indian, and not disturbing their peace. Patriotism is not dying for nations, but living and letting others live. As a nation, we have to earn respect from our neighboring countries so we can earn a seat on the UN Security Council and be the leader among the community of Nations. We need to honor our signature on the Human rights charter at the United Nations. I hope our current Indian political leadership understands what it takes to be the world leader.

The above description is about India, is this your India too?

Achche Din Aayienge

Where have the good days gone?
The music, singing and the dances at friends’ weddings
Groom was my friend, he was either Ram or Rahim
Sometimes Sikh or Jain and sometimes John
His religion never mattered to me, he was my friend

Who does not remember the real and filmi romances?
Nargis Sunil Dutt, Suraya Dev Anand, Kamini Dilip Kumar
Nature brings hearts together, and no one had a problem
No one had a problem with that, everyone minded his or her own business.
The poet said Ishq Per zor Nahin ai wo aatish hai Ghalib (Love happens)
Shakeel, on the other hand, claimed, Pyar Kiya to Darna Kya (Why fear if you fall in love)

Who will forget Krishna’s advice, which the Quran also gave
That whenever confusion, chaos, and distrust goes to extremes,
Someone among us will emerge and restore the righteousness
Achche Din Aayienge, that’s Krishna’s promise and cannot be wrong
(Modified to meet both the traditions?)

The Bhagavad Gita says, Vasudhaiva Kutumbukum,
The Quran, Bible and all other books voice the same
That we all originated from a single couple, and
That we are all one family. Now, we need to follow it.

Celebrating India’s Republic Day

Comments Off on Celebrating India’s Republic Day

INDIA’S REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATION

The National Council of Asian Indian Association (NCAIA) organized the event this evening. The Indian Ambassador to the United States graced his presence, and several county and state elected representatives attended the event. Good gathering, good food, and significant cultural dances – it was a well-organized program that started on time and finished on time!

India’s constitution is a reflection of the US constitution. Indeed both of them start with “We, the people” with identical articles. Even though it is proclaimed as a secular democratic constitution, it is a Pluralistic constitution.

Random picture

What is happening in India now is bad, bad and bad, but bad things don’t last, India has a history of 5000 years culture, and no one can force change it, it is resilient and will bounce back and the righteousness will the restored. Lord Krishna had promised whenever un-righteousness takes over, and he will emerge from among us to restore the goodness. The protests are him in disguise. India will return to normalcy soon.

Let me proudly add, that India is the first nation on the earth with true diversity; it is the first nation to be home to several religions. The Middle East comes after that with four different faiths. Can you guess the beliefs prevailed in India 2000 years ago, and in the Middle East? Now, America tops the nations in the number of religions, languages, cultures, ethnicities, and nationalities.

Random picture with friends. It is the first time that I did not take any pictures – If I were to take, I will end up writing about it, and spend several hours. So, I chose not to take pictures. It was good to see so many new faces and meet so many old friends.

If you are an Indian living in the Washington DC area, I would invite you to join our group. Call me to become a member. It is a great team and represents the character of India – inclusive with respect for all.

What is Pluralism?

Comments Off on What is Pluralism?

Pluralism, in its purest form, is defined as “Respecting the otherness of the other.” Pluralism in religion is respecting different ways of worshipping the creator (or no worship) as a legitimate way to the believer of that faith. Pluralism in Politics that is accepting other’s political views is as dear to him/her as my belief is to me. Pluralism in society – that the food others eat does to them what my food does to me, the clothes others wear, serve their purpose as my clothes serve my need. At the workplace, we have to respect the composite otherness of the other person to work cohesively and to be free from tensions and produce optimum value to the organization we work.

Pluralism is operative in religion, politics, society, culture, dining, clothing, and workplace. As we learn to respect the otherness of the other, conflicts fade, and solutions emerge. The Economist on Modi

Comments Off on The Economist on Modi

Modi stokes divisions in the worlds biggest Democracy

The article follows my commentary

The subtitle of the article in Intolerant India. I object to that. India is not intolerant, the current party ruling India is intolerant. India will always be a great nation.

Our priority should be to save our motherland, we have rescued once from the colonialist, then from Indira Gandhi, and now we need to recover it from the Modi-Shah duo.

Modi devotees are appreciated for their devotion to him. They gave him their support in good faith,  hoping there will be sab ka saath (everyone comes together), sab ka Vikas (everyone’s prosperity) and sab ka Vishwas (everyone’s trust). Modi has betrayed them on all counts. The list of his misadventures and experimenting with the Indian economy and society will derail India. I pray that their loyalty remains to mother India and rescue her from the misguided duo.

A disaster is waiting to happen. Indian Muslims must be appreciated for not resorting to violence, despite the lynchings, harassments, beating, and looting that is going on. Modi’s killing machine can aspire to kill a few million Muslims, but it will bring destruction to all Indians. No one will be at peace for a while. The allied powers of the world will nix the axis power of Sangh Parivar. It is not going to be good for anyone.

If Modi does not let his ingrained, trained hatred for Muslims evaporate, India will be on the warpath of a civil war. You will never hear Salaam, Happy Eid, or Merry Christmas from individuals who come out of RSS Madrasas. They are afraid to utter these words as if they would become a Muslim or Christian. Mr. Modi is a product of the RSS -Madrasa, where brainwashing of the innocent Hindus to hate Muslims and Christians takes place. RSS has been an anti-India organization since its inception. Their man killed Gandhi, and they did not fly the Indian National flag in their offices until recently, neither they participated in the freedom struggle.

The article brings about the non-sense about Indian Muslims supporting Muslims of Pakistan; they don’t. Everyone loves their motherland, no matter what country they belong to. The same hypocrites bend over backward to help Hindus from Pakistan or Bangladesh. We should help all persecuted people regardless of their religion or region.

All the prosperity India has accumulated over the years is lining up for wrecking with his revengeful attitude. Think about it; he has got nothing to lose; after all, he is a Faqeer.  The losers will be the average Indians, who have to work, go to school, commute, and live together.   We need to think in terms of living in harmony. The Hitlers, Baghdadis, Bin Laden’s, and Milosevic’s have come and gone leaving behind a trail of destruction, and they got nothing to lose either. We need to create safe societies so all Indians can live without fear.

We have a responsibility to speak up! Our silence or support of this regime is bad for the Indians. If Modi supporters are cherishing the acts of harassing and lynching other Indians, they are wrong, what goes around, comes around. Everyone will pay the price.

A Genocide is in making in India on Mike Pompeo’s watch.

PM Modi is destroying India on all fronts, civility, social cohesion, and the economy. He is hell-bent on ridding Christians and Muslims of India on Hitlerian model

Intolerant India
Narendra Modi stokes divisions in the world’s biggest democracy

India’s 200m Muslims fear the prime minister is building a Hindu state

LeadersJan 23rd 2020 edition

Jan 23rd 2020

Last month India changed the law to make it easier for adherents of all the subcontinent’s religions, except Islam, to acquire citizenship. At the same time, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (bjp) wants to compile a register of all India’s 1.3bn citizens, as a means to hunt down illegal immigrants (see Briefing). Those sound like technicalities, but many of the country’s 200m Muslims do not have the papers to prove they are Indian, so they risk being made stateless. Ominously, the government has ordered the building of camps to detain those caught in the net.

You might think that the bjp’s scheme was a miscalculation. It has sparked widespread and lasting protests. Students, secularists, even the largely fawning media have begun to speak out against Narendra Modi, the prime minister, for his apparent determination to transform India from a tolerant, multi-religious place into a chauvinist Hindu state.

In fact, the scheme looks like the most ambitious step yet in a decades-long project of incitement. The bjp first rose to national prominence by agitating for the demolition of a mosque in the city of Ayodhya, to make way for a temple to Ram, a Hindu deity. The destruction of the mosque in 1992 by a mob of Hindu extremists, followed by deadly riots, only propelled the party’s ascent. Likewise, a massacre of Muslims in the state of Gujarat in 2002, when Mr Modi was chief minister, made him a hero to Hindu nationalists around the country.

Alas, what has been electoral nectar for the bjp is political poison for India. By undermining the secular principles of the constitution, Mr Modi’s latest initiatives threaten to do damage to India’s democracy that could last for decades. They are also likely to lead to bloodshed.

The sad truth is that Mr Modi and the bjp are likely to benefit politically by creating divisions over religion and national identity. Such subjects keep the party’s activists and their allies in Hindu-nationalist groups energised—always a boon, given India’s relentless sequence of state elections. They also distract attention from awkward topics such as the economy, which has struggled since the bjp’s thumping election victory last year (see article). Most important, Mr Modi seems to calculate that a sizeable minority of Indian voters are sympathetic to his constant insinuation that Muslims are dangerous fifth-columnists, always scheming to do Hindus down and sell out their country to Pakistan. That is enough to keep him in office. Because of India’s first-past-the-post electoral system and a divided opposition, the bjp won its outright majority in parliament with just 37% of the vote.

Just now the bjp may be hunting for a new grievance. The Supreme Court recently issued a ruling that had the effect of depriving it of its favourite cause, by clearing the way for a Hindu temple to be built at the site of the demolished mosque in Ayodhya. The citizenship ruckus appeals to the party for the very same reasons that it has prompted widespread alarm. The plan to compile a register of genuine Indians as part of a hunt for foreign interlopers affects all 1.3bn people in the country. It could drag on for years, inflaming passions over and over again, as the list is compiled, challenged and revised. Just how the register will be drawn up, and what the consequences of exclusion are, remain woolly. Indeed, Mr Modi is already claiming it has all been misunderstood. Meanwhile, the hullabaloo helps reinforce the notion, so electorally valuable to the bjp, that Hindus, although about 80% of the population, are threatened by shadowy forces that it alone has the courage to confront.

This imperils the inspiring idea of India as the world’s largest democracy. Mr Modi’s policies blatantly discriminate against his Muslim compatriots. Why should a secular government shelter persecuted Hindus from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, but explicitly vow not to take a single downtrodden Muslim? The citizenship row is only the latest in a series of affronts, from the bjp’s lionising of vigilantes thought to have killed Muslims to the collective punishment of the people of the Kashmir valley, who have suffered arbitrary arrests, smothering curfews and an internet blackout for five months.

Since independence, India has confounded predictions that its democracy would crumble by accommodating its many constituencies of language, ethnicity, caste and religion. A secular and impartial government, even if flawed in many other ways, protects all these groups. The deliberate and sustained persecution of one of them constitutes an implicit threat against all—and so puts the political system at risk. Voters should recall that the bjp has experimented with policies that disadvantage other minorities, from low-caste Hindus who defy the party’s view of their religion to speakers of languages other than Hindi.

Because his rabble-rousing has a human cost, Mr Modi is also tarnishing the memory of Mahatma Gandhi, a preacher of non-violence. As it is, many Muslims have been lynched or beaten to death for supposed slights to Hinduism, such as loving a Hindu woman or killing a cow. From time to time the stoking of anti-Muslim sentiment leads to massacres like the one in Gujarat, in which more than 1,000 people were killed. By perpetually firing up Hindus and infuriating Muslims, the bjp makes fresh bloodshed more likely.

Mr Modi may imagine he can keep communal tensions under control, ramping them up and tamping them down as his political fortunes demand. But even if he is only cynically exploiting religious bigotry, many in the Hindu nationalist rank-and-file are true believers. They are not easily restrained, as the slaughter in Gujarat showed. With his warlike rhetoric about Pakistan, his head-cracking in Kashmir and his flagrantly biased approach to citizenship, the prime minister has raised the zealots’ expectations. He may not want to take things too far—he has a country to govern—but they will have no such compunction.

Something worth defending

Happily, many Indians have already had enough, as the recent protests show. The Supreme Court, which this week declined to suspend the citizenship law, should heed this, show some unexpected spine and declare it unconstitutional. And rather than stoke hostility between two of the world’s great religions, Mr Modi should look for other paths to voters’ hearts. ■

Arfa Khanum’s take on Current Situation in India

Comments Off on Arfa Khanum’s take on Current Situation in India

The following video by Arfa Sherwani is in the Urdu-Hindi languages and offers a good analysis of the situation and opposition to CAA, NRC, and NPR. She resonates with most people who care about India and want India to remain among the civilized nations. Indeed, Shashi Tharoor, Arfa Khanum and I have a similar take on the nature of the rallies.

In the rally, we held in Washington DC, I felt compelled to get the microphone and remind people that the fight is to defend India’s secular constitution which is a cure of all ailments the current government is inflicting on us. Even though the movement started with Muslims, but the entire Indian community is involved in it.  Upon my turn, I welcomed the guests with a Namaste, Salam, Sat Sri Akal, Jai Jinendra, Budhha Namo, and Hamazor Hama Ashobed and Peace to you. Jai Bhim is another greeting that is a big part of Indian greetings. It was such a joy to hear the people repeat after me with great enthusiasm.  The protests were about inclusion, and we wanted to make sure no one felt excluded at the rally, hence, the inclusive greetings. The next number was the Indian National Anthem, which everyone sang along with passion. The National Anthem binds every one of the 1.3 billion Indians. It is good to see the goosebump with emotions when people sing the National Anthem.http://centerforpluralism.com/indian-americans-protests-against-modis-acts-in-washington-dc/

Indeed, way back on December 19, I sent the following bulletins to most of the groups who were defending India’s constitution.

The following poster was shared on 12/19/19 – similar thoughts are expressed by Arfa Khanum and Shashi Tharoor.

Our format consists of four parts; Interfaith prayers, Holocaust, Genocides, Massacred and the Pledge of Peace. Silently, we will acknowledge all suffering, but physically we are limited to a few Genocides each year.

This year, a Holocaust survivor will share his story, followed by updated Uyghur, Rohingya, and the signs of making of Genocide in India. I urge everyone to watch the Schindler’s list and Civil War movies to grasp the signs.

I believe, when we acknowledge each other’s grief and participate in each other’s commemoration, we connect with the humanness within ourselves and seed the relationship of understanding and caring for each other.

There is a shameless cruelty in us, either we shy away or refuse to acknowledge the sufferings of others, worrying that it will devalue our own, or amounts to infidelity to our pain, and every community and nation has suffered through this. To all those who have endured the Holocaust, Genocides, Massacres, Ethnic Cleansing, Land Mines, Hunger, Rape, Torture, Occupation, Expulsion, and inhuman brutality, we must say, you are not alone. The least we can do in the process of healing is to acknowledge every one’s pain in one voice.

I cannot be safe if the people around me are not, and I will not have peace if people around me don’t. It is in my interest to seek a peaceful world for one and all.

This is a Muslim initiative to assure fellow humans who have endured the Holocaust, Genocide, ethnic cleansing, massacres, rapes, injustice and other atrocities that we are all in this together to create a better world. Tikkun Olam is our sacred duty.

Satya Nadella is a true Indian-American Hero

I don’t know how many Indian Americans are bigots.  but know a few who have not learned about America and the values it stands for. We have a diamond among us that shines and has become a true Indian-American hero who understands liberty and freedom.

I salute Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft.

“Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella strongly criticized a new citizenship law that the government of India, one of the company’s largest markets, passed last month. “I think what is happening is sad. … It’s just bad,” Nadella told BuzzFeed News Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith at a Microsoft event in Manhattan on Monday, emphasizing the role that technology and immigration have played in his life and career. “And even a story like mine being possible in a country like this — I think, if anything, I would love to see a Bangladeshi immigrant who comes to India and creates the next unicorn in India or becomes the CEO of Infosys. That should be the aspiration. If I had to sort of mirror what happened to me in the US, I hope that’s what happens in India.”

Nadella’s attitude that will place India on the platform of prosperity, instead of getting stuck in the non-sense of regionalism, religionism, and casteism, we should be open to anyone who can put together plans and bring prosperity to all.

If you cherish to rid of Muslims, Christians, and Dalits from India, then you need to be kicked out of America, you don’t belong here.

It is shameful, that Modi-Shah duo is playing with the short-lived base emotions of Indians, and even some Indian Americans have fallen into the Modi-Shah trap of hating Muslims, Christians, Dalits, and other Indians as if it is going to put food on their plate and clothe their children. This duo is making asses out of the vulnerable Indians. How long can they do that?  Eventually, the people will wake up and figure out they were duped. They will restore their dharma and become good people again.

Modis come and go as Hitlers have come and gone taking advantage of people for their benefit.  Modi says “Hum faqeer hain.” who is he fooling? He is in it for the lust of power and control like some grandparents in their respective families. Old men threaten everyone from speaking against them.

We should not stray from the goal of wanting India to be among the top ten civilized and prosperous nations, and it happens if we value freedom. If people are free to live and work without tensions, harmony and prosperity would be the results. Modi-Shaw policies believe in divide and rule, they will continue to pit one Indian against the other. First Hindus against Muslims and Christians, then one type of Hindu against the other. They will not spare anyone, including you. They are driven by their lust for control and will destroy India. They need to resign before leaving a trail of destruction.

I commend all Indian Americans who stood up for the freedom and rights of individuals no matter where they live, the United States, India, or any nation.

Representative Raja Krishnamoorthy, spoke at an RSS rally in Chicago and said, he follows and believes in Hinduism that Swami Vivekananda taught and practiced, the inclusive Hinduism, and not the Hinduism of Hindutva.

Representative Pramila Rajagopal stood up for the freedom and the rights of individuals to life liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. Ro Khanna is firmly acting as an authentic India-American serving interests of America and not India. Who should we be loyal to?

Hindutva organization consumes you with ill-will for others, but thank God,  your American born Kids will not support your dumb ideas of exclusions. They want democracy and freedom like they have for themselves, to be for others as well.

It was appalling to hear a representative of Hindu American Foundation announcing in a religious freedom meeting that his organization supports India’s action in Kashmir. How can an American believe that the consent of the people does not matter? The members of the Hindu American Foundation need to take a course in First Amendment to functions as good American Citizens. As Indian Americans, we need to wish for Indians what we wish for ourselves in America. The freedom to eat, drink, wear, and believe whatever works in the pursuit of their happiness.” India West letter.

Some of these guys want to denigrate India – they want India to act like some of the other countries where they don’t respect the rights of minorities, how dumb! They should instead want India to be among the top tier civilized nations that other nations can look up to emulate. It is time we the people who want the best for India to speak up.  Modi supporters, unfortunately, want to downgrade India by supporting Mr. Modi. PM Modi is destroying India on all fronts, civility, social cohesion, and economy. He is hell-bent on ridding Christians and Muslims of India on the Hitlerian model. More in the press release.

Dileep speaks about Vasudhaiva Kutumbukum with one mouth and supports the discriminatory bill with the other. I am disappointed in his take. Did he make a mistake?

Bharat erroneously believes that Muslims can go to Muslim nations so Hindus should have a Hindu Rashtra exclusively for them. If America was a Christian Nation, he would have no place in America. He does not understand that every human is deeply attached to the land he or she is born. Muslims and Christians are equal citizens of India, if he thinks he has more rights to India than the others, he needs to extricate himself from the caste system that gives him such lousy ideas.

I urge Sant to wake up and support what is right and be on the right side of history.

The Sangh Parivar is made of several outfits from Bajrang Dal to RSS, just like the Islamist outfits such as ISIS, Taliban, LeT, Shabab and others. They all believe in their supremacy and want to dominate and subjugate others.

As an Indian American, I expect my fellow Indian Americans to continue to enjoy American values of Liberty and freedom, but not deny the same to fellow Indians in India.

There is hope, the bigotry of those few Indians will end with them at the crematorium or the cemetery. Your kids will not support your dumb values of denying equal opportunities to Indians in India, while you benefit from it.

The poem of Protests Hum Dekhenge

Comments Off on The poem of Protests Hum Dekhenge

This poem has taken up India by storm, it is a poem of protest. A few tried to communalize the poem, that is to make it Hindu V Muslim, but failed. The whole nation is singing this song now. I have seen in three different languages. Judge Markandey Katju and RJ Sayema have explained it well.

Note this site is for my writings only, but due to the circumstances in India, I have posted other’s writing as well.

The Controversy around Faiz’s Hum Dekhenge is so fatuous
Markandey Katju

The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur has set up a panel to consider whether the poem ‘Hum Dekhenge’ by the famous Urdu poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz is “anti-Hindu”. This followed the recitation of the poem by students on December 17, 2019 on the IIT Kanpur campus during their gathering in support of the students of Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi who were assaulted by the police during their anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act agitation.

I need not go into the inanity of such a step by the IIT authorities, who seem to have no understanding of Urdu poetry or of this particular poem. However, I am taking this opportunity to say something about Urdu poetry and Faiz.

Every language has its poetic tradition but in my opinion, Urdu poetry expresses the voice of the human heart in an especially powerful yet elegant manner (andaaz-e-bayaan).

I regard Mirza Ghalib as the greatest Urdu poet of all times, and Faiz the greatest Urdu poet of the 20th century. I saw Faiz only once when he visited my home town, Allahabad, in 1981 and was honoured at a massive function on the Allahabad University lawns.

Now before coming to Faiz’s ‘Hum Dekhenge’, which has sparked off a fatuous controversy, I would like to say something about Urdu poetry.

Urdu poets often express their thoughts not in direct language but indirectly, by hints and allusions. Urdu ashaar (couplets) often have a literal, superficial meaning, but also a deeper, real meaning which is conveyed by indication, insinuation, suggestion and metaphor. It is this deeper, real meaning which the poet is seeking to convey, but to understand it one has to ponder deeply. This is particularly done by poets in times when it may be dangerous to talk directly, such as during martial law (when this poem was written).

Take for instance Faiz’s famous sher:

Gulon mein rang bhare
baad-e-naubahaar chale
Chale bhi ao ki
Gulshan ka kaarobaar chale.

Now the literal meaning of this verse is:

Among the flowers, a coloured breeze of the new spring is blowing
Come, so that the work of the garden can be done.

But that is only the ostensible, superficial meaning. The word ‘gulshan’ literally means garden, but here it means the country. So the real meaning of the sher which the poet is conveying is this:

The objective conditions in the country are ripe,
Come forward patriots, the country needs you (for a revolution).

Similarly, when we read Urdu poetry, we must sometimes wrack our brains and try to understand what it is really that the poet is seeking to convey.

Coming now to Faiz’s poem ‘Hum Dekhenge’, one must remember it was written during General Zia-ul-Haq’s oppressive martial law regime, when it was dangerous to talk too directly. So part of the poem uses traditional Islamic imagery, but it is used to attack Zia’s dictatorship and restore democracy, not for establishing orthodox Islam. The poem was sung by Iqbal Bano, deliberately wearing a sari (regarded by some as an Indian and unIslamic dress for Pakistani women), despite a ban on the public recitation of Faiz’s poems at that time.

The lines of the poem which an “expert panel” of IIT Kanpur is now investigating for being “anti-Hindu” are:

Jab arz-e-khuda ke kaabe se
sab but uthwaaye jaayenge
Hum ahl-e-safa mardood-e-haram masnad par baithaye jaayenge.

Which means:

When from the abode of God (Kaaba) all idols will be removed
Then we the faithful, who were debarred from sacred places
Will be placed on the royal seat.

It is alleged that these lines are anti-Hindu as Hindus worship idols, and these lines are clearly against idol worship. But this is only a superficial understanding. Faiz was a lifelong communist, and he could hardly have meant that he wanted Islamisation of society. In fact, it was his antagonist General Zia who wanted this.

Also read: Firaq Gorakhpuri’s Legacy for Our Times

To understand these lines, we must see the context, and also see the lines preceding and succeeding these lines.
Before these lines, the verses in the poem are:

Jab zulm-e-sitam ke koh-e-giraan,
rui ke tarah udh jaayenge
Hum mehkoomon ke paaon tale,
yeh dharti dhad dhad dhadkegi.

And the succeeding lines are:

Sab taaj uchaale jaayenge,
Sab takht giraaye jaayenge.

It is obvious from this that there is nothing “anti-Hindu” in this poem, and it is nothing but stupidity to regard it so. It is a poem powerfully attacking the oppressors of the people, and expressing a conviction that one day the oppressed will become the rulers of their own destiny.

The administration of IIT Kanpur, which is otherwise a reputed institution, have made themselves a laughing stock before the whole country.

Karan Thapar’s powerful interview
The interview is a good summary of the current Indian government’s evil policies. Karan Thapar is one of the most respected journalists. Modi had walked out on him. It’s 55 minutes, worth listening to fully grasp what’s going on and what the future of India would look like, if we don’t stop these evil men of BJP, hell-bent on destroying India’s economy, it’s future and social cohesion.  Please do read the amnesty report posted earlier today.

Enough is Enough! If the state bullies me because of my faith, I shall publicly assert it
The onus of saving India is on the majority, and not on Minorities

When I protested against the Citizenship Amendment Act at Parivartan Chowk in Lucknow on December 19, I did not protest just against the legislation. That was the obvious, immediate protest.

There was another unspoken, more passionate protest happening within the hearts of Muslims like me who had assembled at Parivartan Chowk. It was a protest against six long years of the anti-Muslim agenda of the Narendra Modi government. It was a protest against the lynching of Mohammad Akhlaq, Pehlu Khan, Tabrez Ansari, Junaid Khan, and many others whose names have been forgotten. It was a protest against the passing of the Triple Talaq Bill. It was a protest against the Supreme Court verdict in the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi title suit. It was a protest against the CAA and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Finally, it was a protest against the trigger that pushed us out on the streets — the Delhi Police’s crackdown on the students of Jamia Millia Islamia. It was a cumulative protest, a release of pent-up anguish over the relentless anti-Muslim agenda of the state and the media since 2014.

In Modi’s first term as prime minister, the anti-Muslim agenda was played out strategically, one that averted a collective protest. Individual Muslims were lynched frequently, but in different states and at different points of time. No collective action was taken at one point of time against the entire Muslim community. The state’s attack on Muslims was indirect, executed through ragtag cow “vigilantes”, WhatsApp myths and shrill TV discussions on “why don’t Muslims chant Bharat Mata ki jai?” or “why does AMU have a Jinnah portrait?” or “what is love jihad?”
