What makes America great?

I wrote this on Jan 4, 2008. It is time to start bragging about America again. Let the world know that we are one of the greatest nations when it comes to honoring and respecting the God given uniqueness to each one of the 303,171,404 Americans. We have made incredible progress in civility and plurality in a very short period of time.

Christina Cauterucci at Slate writes, “Replacing Jackson on the $20 instead of Hamilton on the $10 wasn’t the good-willed genius of the Department of Treasury, nor was it the bright idea of unofficial Hamilton lobbyist Lin-Manuel Miranda. It was the original demand made by the women who launched the Women on 20s campaign in 2015. The campaign crowd sourced nominations for the female currency candidate and collected more than 600,000 votes over three rounds. Tubman won, beating out Eleanor Roosevelt by just 7,000 votes. Women on 20’s presented the results and the proposal in a petition to President Obama last May.”

Giving more than 600,000 Votes in three rounds to a lady from the last century, who happens to be African American makes America Great!  Americans chose her over several other competitors to deserve this honor.  Indeed, we are the greatest nation on the earth.

Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. expressed that in his speech, “ I have a dream that my four little  children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”

Our Founding Fathers laid the ground work for such a society, “ We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Chief Seattle, a Native American said this perfectly, “All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons of the earth. Man did not weave the web of life; he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the webs, he does it to himself.”

It was on a cold day of December 1, 1955 when Rosa Parks was ordered to give up her seat to a white passenger. Thank God, she refused to obey the orders. Till then an African American was not allowed to drink from the same water fountain or dine in a restaurant. In life, all it takes is one courageous person to speak up and inspire us to be on the path of righteousness.

Fifty three years later on Wednesday, January 3, 2008 at 10:00 PM history was made again. Democratic candidate Barak Obama, an African American was declared winner of the Iowa caucus for the Democratic Party.

97% of the nearly 3 Million Iowans are rural conservative white folks. On this day, they have fulfilled a larger dream for the world – where the color of the skin doesn’t matter, but the character of the person does. January 3, 2008 will be written as a golden day in the civic History of America. More at America Bragging.

I was listening to NPR this morning ( November 4, 2008) and around 7:20 some one said that he drove quite a distance to South Carolina to witness history in making; listening to Obama on the eve of the Election Day.

I choked and I felt the tears in my eyes, the tears of Joy, I was happy to think of the prospect of America becoming a great nation once again, in those few bare seconds I was imagining prosperity knocking on every American door fulfilling the dream of millions of Americans with a Job, health and education for their children. Obama Choked me with tears.

We set the tone of change in the world, whatever we do, others see the value in it and emulate it. This is what makes America Great.

“I guess he isn’t sir. Anyhow I’m gwine to sit here till I git it.”

I am ashamed of my act

My flight from Dallas to Baltimore on Sunday, April 17, 2016 was cancelled due to severe thunderstorms. I needed to be in DC on Monday and I searched for all possible flights and came upon Spirit Airlines. Enthusiastically, I booked it.

The flight was to leave at 1:29, and I was there at 12:00, way ahead of the time. The line was super long with over a hundred people to check in their baggage and pay for it.

Even if it took 30 seconds to process each person, I would not have made it. I found out that the line was the spirit airlines flights going to Baltimore, Miami, New Orleans and other cities. Line was just not moving and the time was 12:37, and I was to check in at 12:44 and there was no way, I would have made it.

I decided to ask people and see if they would let me ahead in the line, I showed the departure time on my ticket, and they were way too good and let me get ahead. Finally, I jumped the last ten to the front one, he said go ahead…

Within a few seconds the 10th man in the line, screamed at me for jumping the line, I was guilty and chose to remain silent. He was not happy; he was in my face… He showed me his ticket and he was flying in the same flight… He complained to the counter…they were too busy listening to him…the people who permitted me did not know what to do either. I was feeling bad standing and debating what to do, this was not me, this was wrong, normally, I am the one who stands up for such violations, and here I am doing it myself… in those few tense seconds, the ticket counter called me to check my baggage, it was 12:59, they checked me in and I looked at the watch, I had 30 minutes to dash through the security and then run from terminal 15 to terminal 32, that is another thing I shouldn’t do.

So I dashed to the security… and the people in the line made me the way to go ahead, as there was another lady in front me with the same problem… and … I ran… and made it to the terminal, we still had 6 or 7 minutes left as the flight was delayed. I decided to stay behind the column to avoid seeing that man, if he were to make it.

My seat was at the tail end of the plane 30F.
I thanked God for giving me the place to hide, I was ashamed of myself.

I was the last one to deplane… and I took my time to get out, and then hung out in the terminal till all people checked out their baggage… I did not want to face the man in case he tells me like it is, I was wrong, what can I say? I took my coat off, and even took my glasses off and flattened my hair to look different.

Way back some 18 years ago, I took my kids to Taj Mahal in India, the line was forever, but there were kids who stood in the line and sell the spot for a few bucks… I was tempted to do that, but my kids refused to take that spot… they did not want to cut through the line, I was proud of them.

I’ll never do this again, I had to hide feel humiliated… I have always wondered how do politicians live with that?

Washington, DC, Tuesday, March 15, 2016 – The Institute for social policy and understanding released a newsworthy “American Muslim Poll” in a panel discussion format today.

It was a joy to see a Muslim organization conduct a poll, and present the data out to the public.  There were a few surprises in it,  like Muslims are more optimistic than the general population about future of America,  and a much lower percentage of Muslims wanted religion in politics compared to the Protestant and Catholics.  What was commonly believed was reflected as well, and that is Muslims and Jews lean towards the Democratic Party,  and Muslims mirror the Protestants in religiosity, meaning frequenting the place of their worship.  Above all nearly 40% of Muslims are politically independent.  While security was number #1 priority to fellow Americans, economy was #1 priority for Muslims. Muslims are patriotic Americans indeed.
ISPU.KeyFindingsThere was a question from the audience about Muslim icons, and of course Muhammad Ali tops the list.  Out in the lobby, Dalia Mogahed, the research director and I were talking about the statistics.  Out of appreciation for her pioneering work,  I mentioned that she becomes a Muslim American Icon for her research work, no one has done this before.  Until now, most of the conversation in Public Square was based on observations and hearsay, and now, for the first time, it is based on empirical data.

I compare her to another Muslim Icon from India, Dr. Abusaleh Shariff who was the first Muslim to produce extensive socio-economic data about Indian Muslims and his report, the Sachar report is the basis for any conversations about Muslims in India.
ISPU-PanelI believe they will have the full information and presentation on their website www.Ipsu.org soon. This narrative and data needs to be shared widely as it will mitigate the perceived conflicts and nurtures goodwill in building a cohesive America. Indeed, Muslim Americans are no different than fellow Americans.  I urge fellow Muslims to take this up and share it with fellow Americans in the interfaith and civic groups, the more we learn about each other, the fewer the conflicts would be.

Mr. Robertson, more than the Muslims, Jesus would be disappointed in you severely. The role of religious leaders is to mitigate conflicts and nurture goodwill, and he called out “Blessed are the Peacemakers.” Leaders invoke civility in the society, so members of the society can live in peace and without apprehension and I urge you to be at least a peace maker, if not the blessed one.

I urge Muslims to follow the Prophet’s formula of mitigating conflicts and nurturing goodwill and not be offended with Mr. Robertson’s comments. Prophet was a mercy to mankind, and it is time for us to collectively follow him and be kind and gentler towards any one who is nasty towards us.

Mr. Roberston, what did you do this morning?

You pit Christian Americans against Muslim Americans? Do you cherish Americans living in tensions? Do you get paid for that, do the dumb and dumber ones donate more money to you? Shame on them to encourage you to be a rascal. If you need money badly to do good things, we can pitch in for you, but don’t invoke the baseness in fellow humans. Please don’t be an embarrassment to Christianity, the man who sacrificed his life should not be misrepresented. I pray for you to become a blessed peace maker and join me in created a safe and secure America for every one of us.

Mr. Robertson, Religion is not the problem!

None of us had a religion before, and each one of us was given guidance to live in peace and harmony with oneself and with others. A majority of the people got that message of religions right, and a few creeps did not, and it is our role to help every one restore peace. Is it not?

But when bad things happen, who do you blame, religion or the creeps?

Let me show you what happens.
When we blame the creeps, what happens? We will hunt them down wherever we can find them, and punish them according to the laws of the land and restore trust in the society, so no one can live in apprehension or tensions. What a relief it is to stop the bad guy!

If you blame the religion on the other hand, what happens? Nothing happens! It is the dumbest thing to blame the religion, is it not?

Religion is not a being, not a thing, not a body, for Christ’s sake, it is an intangible item. You cannot shoot, kick, beat, thrash, hang, kill or bury it. It does not do any good and no problem will be solved except aimless barking.
Problem remains, people will continue to remain apprehensive and fearful of each other. Let’s find solutions to these problems instead of barking at religion.
I have said this on Stuart Varney show, Hannity Show, and given many speeches on the topic and have written it umpteen times. It is down right stupid to blame religion. God willing, I will get on Fox and Friends or any show and start talking about it.

Let me tell you why, we had 355 mass murderers in 2015 in a population of 322 million Americans that equals 1.1 mass murderers for every million Americans. There are 4 Million Muslims in America, and if we go by proportionality there should have been 4.4 Muslim mass murderers, but there was only one in San Bernardino.

The more we integrate, the more we become one; we rise and fall together in goodness and crimes. It is senseless to allocate our resources for this one guy and ignore 354 mass murderers, who are part of the mainstream Americans.

Should I cry over the low intelligence of Ted Cruz? Has anyone checked out his IQ or Trump’s?  Where did he come up with the idea of “Muslim Neighborhoods?” There is no such thing as Muslim neighborhood, with the exception of a few neighborhoods in Texas, Muslims live amidst all other Americans in regular normal neighborhoods, and that is the right thing to do. But there is no exclusive Muslim neighborhood that I can find.

I was a manger for a home builder in Carrollton, Texas, and in phase 1, we built 113 Homes, the mosque was on the other side of the street.  Only three families bought homes there for elderly couples to walk to the Mosque.

Congressman –Peter King’s investigation of Mosques in New York fell flat on his face. They had agents Planted in the Mosques in New York, they could not find any evidence of the extremism, the report says.

By the way, Muslims get double shaft every time a terrorist blows himself up and hurts other innocent by standers. First they become suspect and second their religion gets maligned.  Muslims should be appreciated, because of the doubling down on them, they go the extra length to report, check with FBI, and nearly 2/3rds of bad guys were reported by Muslims.  We don’t want any one of those turds amidst us. We have a greater interest in getting rid of them than anyone else.

The New York Post writes, “By refusing to step up legitimate, community-oriented policing in Muslim neighborhoods, we’re doing a disservice to our Muslim citizens.” That is bull crap, 345 mass murderers from the mainstream community and one from the Muslims community are embedded among us, it is dumb to focus on one and ignore 354.

I severely criticize the dumbness of this statement “This threat may have originated in the Middle East, but after Paris, San Bernardino and Brussels, we know that our enemies are now embedded among us. If it’s politically incorrect to go searching for terrorists where we can reasonably expect terrorists to be, then political correctness will kill us.”

Religious freedom wins in Malaysia, re-conversion to Christianity is a landmark ruling.

Washington, D.C., April 6, 2016 —  The World Muslim Congress welcomes the landmark ruling by a High Court in Malaysia that recognized the  freedom of religion is a fundamental human right.

The right to follow one’s conscience is the God given right of every human.  When Adam was given the choice to eat or not eat the forbidden fruit with the given set of consequences, Adam ‘chose’ to eat the fruit. God could have stopped him, but God wanted to set an example of living up his own word and what freedom should mean until the human race lives on.

The court struck down a decades-long government policy that had made it tough for Christian converts to renounce their former Islamic faith without the consent of an Islamic court. The had another great judgment in the case of Lina Joy.

The Association of Churches in Sarawak praised the decision “as a ratification of the fundamental right to freedom of religion in Malaysia,” Herald Malaysia andChristian Today reported.

“This judgment reaffirms the supremacy of the Federal Constitution, which under Article 11 defends every Malaysian citizen’s right to freedom of religion,” the group said.

High Court judge Yew Jen Kie of the Kuching High Court, Sarawak state granted the petition of Rooney Rebit asking judicial authorities to declare that his belief in Jesus Christ was a fundamental human right.

Rebit, 41, from a village in Sarawak, was born a Christian but was converted to Islam by his parents when he was about 10 years old and renamed Azmi Mohamad Azam.

Judge Yew ruled that Rebit is “free to exercise his right to freedom of religion and he chose Christianity.”

Indeed, Mr. Rebit is free to exercise his right to freedom; the Quran says 2:256, “… Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error …” This is Islam’s unambiguous affirmation of freedom of faith, which also applies to changing of faith. The Qur’an illuminates before the humanity the two highways [90:10], one of which leads to salvation. Islam is an invitation to the highway toward salvation, but it is based on FREEDOM OF CHOICE (http://apostasyandislam.blogspot.com/).”

We applaud the ruling as it clarifies the propaganda that Muslims compel others to stay in their fold through coercion and compulsion, which was never true or Islamic, even though it was practiced by a few Muslims.

We appreciate the efforts of the Government of Malaysia to uphold the inalienable rights of her citizens, which are God given and inherently Islamic.  We seek God’s guidance in helping us restore the pristine Islam of freedom, justice and mercy to mankind. Amen!

Some of you may detest protesters and use an authoritarian language to describe them, and you should be ashamed of your attitude. Without protesters we would have ruthless dictators, monarchs and bullies ruining the nations, societies, communities and the families. The rights you have taken for granted today came to you because of the protesters at one time who were hated and persecuted, but they stood like a rock like MLK.

1My friend and I chanced at the MLK memorial last week on the anniversary week when he was silenced. We have to honor him for releasing America from the guilt of oppression that would have haunted us Americans, the way we treated fellow Americans who were black, poor and weak was shameful. I walked through the complex and captured his quotes inscribed on the marble walls. Said a silent prayer thanking him for what America is today.

None of the immigrants would have come to America had it not been for MLK and civil rights act. I would not have come to America, if I had to sit in the back of the bus or get humiliated to drink water from a different fountain or not allowed to eat in a restaurant. We the immigrants, all of us from all over the globe thank MLK for that.

Now take a look at the history.

Was George Washington a conformist? Wasn’t he a protester? Did the British leave because he said so? Did they all write the constitution without protests from one or the other? Wasn’t Zoroaster, Confucius, Moses, Krishna, Buddha, Muhammad, Nanak, Bab and many more great individuals, the protesters? For God’s sake they changed the societies through their protests, none of them were conformists.

MikeGhouse-MLK-MemorialPlease don’t look down at the protesters at Trump, Clinton, Sanders or any rallies. They have the balls to stand up for us the chickens, instead of looking down at them; we should admire them for holding the fort of freedom and democracy. Almost all the laws and amendments we have in place is because of the protesters. When I see the protesters around the Capitol Hill, which is daily, I will stop and appreciate them for doing it, even though I disagree with their cause.

Next time, any one puts down the protesters anywhere, let them know that they should be grateful to the protesters like our founding fathers who have given them the freedom to speak up.

Happy Birthday to You, a purposeful life is in your hands

I wish the very best in life for you. May you be soaked with blessings today, tomorrow and throughout your life, and let today be a new beginning.

Purposeful-Life-is-yoursYou can make your life purposeful, meaningful and enjoyable, and can choose to be the driver of your life or be driven by circumstance and others. The choice, as well as the excuse, is yours. I pray that we retain the ability to choose what we want in our lives.

You and I, like everyone else, spend considerable amount of time doing things for others, sometimes out of joy and sometimes reluctantly.  We also spend time watching TV or just chatting with someone aimlessly, and sometimes we regret, oh what a waste of time.  Well, it is time now not to waste the time.

 

Don’t waste your time

It is time to invest an hour of your time on your birthday on you! I hope you can take out an hour, just one hour a month to spend with yourselves and you’ll find it productive once you make your mind and do the needful.

Success is living the life you want to live with or without things. Success is not necessarily driving a Mercedes, having a luxury home, yacht, or making a six-figure income. It is not about doing better than your friends, classmates, siblings or parents either but it is living the life you set yourselves for you.

Nothing in life is more important than knowing yourselves, who you are, what is it that you want, and how do you get it. Remember, no one knows you better than you.

I am pleased to share my experience with you, hoping that you can relate with it.

Once upon a time, I was an ambitious guy and was driven to conquer the world, and simply did not have the patience with people who lacked ambition. A divorce and the death of my mother had humbled me down, as other things have humbled others. I started understanding the varying ambition levels in people and decided that there was no need to drive oneself nuts. I have learned to respect the otherness of others and have accepted the God-given uniqueness of each one of us. This has brought peace, tranquility and happiness to me.

I urge you to consider spending an hour with yourselves creating a purposeful blueprint through your next birthday, a new milestone in your life.

Where to Begin?

The most important thing is to commit yourselves to actually sit down and write out what you want in life. I am serious. If you make that simple commitment, you will find yourselves a life that you can enjoy. If you are afraid of making that commitment, then it is time to challenge yourselves. You got nothing to lose, but gain.

Grab a napkin or open the note pad on your cell phone or simply write on a 3×5 card — Hell, if you can’t find anything, write it on your palm — the following seven things in any order you want.

  3. Financial
  4. Professional
  5. Spirituality
  6. Volunteerism
  7. Health

It should not have taken you more than five minutes to write this down. Now you can get back to your work, driving, eating or whatever you were doing.

When you get the next coffee break or have to go to the rest room, think of other items that are important to you. Register it in your mind and let go of it, and don’t worry about remembering it. I guarantee you; it will come back to you because you have made the commitment.

Number One Family

If you were to select Family as your number one item — please understand that many people are hurt. Some you have money but not trustworthy relationships, some have both, and yet some you’re a combination of both.  Some of the relationships are good, bad and ugly, and unfortunately that is a fact of life. You still have a life to live and how you want to steer it forward is your choice. Let that be your choice and don’t let anyone to run over you, as it may have happened through this date.

Select 5 of the most important relationships in your life now.  Start with each relative. Give at least a minute to each one of them, but don’t hesitate to dwell on them as much as you want. Whether you believe in God or not, those are incomplete transactions of life that will bite incessantly until they are closed.

Closure comes with death. There is nothing you or they can do, and the ugly transactions do close upon death. Do we want to live in agony till then? We owe it to ourselves to have freedom from that bondage now. Forgiving is the most powerful tool available to humanity — there is nothing like it. It brings freedom.

If you are religiously inclined, and are Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jain, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Wicca, Pagan, Zoroastrian or from a native tradition, your tradition has a lot to offer on the subject. Heck, your common sense is good enough too.  God’s love is not denied to anyone who seeks it. Every religion is beautiful — it is our understanding that is flawed.

Number two Friends

On your way home, work, gym or grocery store, think about your item number one and don’t let anything crowd you, not even item number two. Let’s say your item number two is Friends.

Select three friends and spend the next few minutes reviewing about your friends, and what you need to do. Think about a friend who can listen to you, encourage you, and uplift you.

Do you have a friend that you really like, but resent his or her criticism of everything you say or do? It is time to be straight forward. Good friends will not go away if you gather up the courage to say, “Joni, I need your help. When I say something or do something, please hold on to your temptation to critique me, and kindly listen to me and encourage me with positive thoughts. I am having difficulty in coping with criticism at this time.”

If they don’t like it and want to break the relationship, let them. If you fear a loss of a relationship, then you really did not have the relationship to lose it. You don’t lose good friends, no matter what happens, unless you steal their spouse.

Consider reducing your close friendships to a few who can take and give crap without affecting the relationship. Good friends can tune in to your moods or listen and be gentle to you when you want them to be, or brutal when you need them to be, but always be truthful.

Please remember, no one knows what is going on in your mind and you don’t need to be afraid of seeing all the possibilities from useless to useful and everything in between.

Have you thought of being a good friend to them to expect them to be good friend to you?

Number three, four, five and six….
Once again they were:  Family/Friends, Financial, Professional, Spiritual, and Volunteerism  

Number Seven Health

Now that you have thought about each one of the seven major items, it’s time for you to take an hour out — and invest in your well being. Imagine the endless amount of hours you have spent on others, and it is time to give one hour to yourselves.

Next thing

Go to the nearest library, star bucks, or a restaurant and camp it out there for an hour.  Go where have no chance to run into any one you know, you need one full hour, not the diluted hour, but solid quality hour for yourselves.

Sum up your thoughts in bullets or paragraphs — it is entirely up to you about where you are with each one of the 7 items and where you want to be – from doing nothing to advancing to newer levels.  The choices are yours.

You Are Done Now.

It is a great feeling to know oneself — it is liberating. The mere exercise will put a blue print in your hands. Now you are ready for your next birthday. You have a good idea where you are heading and once you see the pathway, you just have to walk on it. If you get in the car, you need to know where and how to go. Your blue print can be simple or more detailed.

Those of us who can free ourselves from tension, pain, anxiety, apprehension, hostility, malice, pressure, tension, stress, strain and conflicts, are showered with blessings of peace and joy. It is good to be free.

My example:

As an example, I am pleased to share about my life. Of course, this is the generic information and not specifics, which will remain private. By the way, there is not much that is private about me. Here is the Ghouse formula for happier living — Happiness and secretiveness are inversely proportional (i.e., greater the happiness, lower the secretiveness and vice-versa).

  1. Family wise there needs to be an improvement and more time needs to be spent with family members.

  2. Relationships with friends have been steady. I have not added any new friends. However, this coming year, I will have considered adding at least one new friend. I will work on mutual growth of at least three friendships to grow into my venture of teaching pluralism.

  3.  Financially, I have not improved a bit over the last year and I plan to restore the financial status I had several years ago.

  4. Professional goals:
    1. The release of my book, Standing Up for Others, is delayed to July.
    2. Failed to open a session at Capitol Hill with pluralism greetings and prayers.
    3. Workshops on pluralism at Capitol Hill and Senate will be conducted.
    4. College campus tours to talk about building a cohesive Americ
    5.  The Pluralism Journal and Pluralism Institute is planned, patrons invited.
  1. Spirituality has become boundary-less for me, i have zero bias towards another human

  2. Volunteerism will continue for me, it is a part of my life.

  3. My future is what I make with the blessings of the spirit around me, and from my friends and well wishers.

We will never go to any place if we don’t have a place to go and we will never have the joy of knowing ourselves, if we don’t make an effort.

This article counters ‘establishing’ a narrative that Islamophobia is alive in India, let’s review its validity.

While some have given currency to the idea that ‘Islamophobia’ is what is causing the turmoil and a wave of intolerance in India, a majority of Indians and Indian Muslims find themselves aghast when they hear Islamophobia in India, what’s that?

The Islamophobia narrative is American in nature and its aggressive organized avatar is traced to the Islamic revolution of Iran in 1979.  Indeed, there was not much talk about terrorism ascribed to Islam prior to that date.

Opportunists have always found ways to make money; there was money in turning the ugly Iran hostage situation into a broader issue, and they cultivated that it into Islam against the West.  Instead of mitigating conflicts between Iran and United States, they aggravated it, and Iran certainly piqued it further with their short-sighted rhetoric.  It was a major foreign policy blunder of America, and one of the shameful outcomes was painting Islam as a villain of the West.

No matter what the conflict was, hijacking a plane or pushing a senior citizen off a cruise liner into the ocean, or the Israel-Palestine conflict, the opportunists sold it as Islamic terrorism to substantiate their line of thinking.

When you start hearing the problems of the day slapped onto Islam and repeated again and again, you develop a phobia for Islam or anything associated with it, and this is an American narrative.

That is not an acceptable narrative in India. Islam is not a new entrant to India for Hindus and others to ‘develop’ fear of it; it’s assimilated well enough to be a part of the norm of the society which the article has articulated well.

Men like Subramanian Swamy, whose claims have been challenged time and again, learn the Islamophobia narrative from American opportunists, and make aggressive attempts to slap it on India.  Should we give validity to their claims?

Not Islamophobia, but ‘Communalism’ is the Indian narrative, a word that describes tensions between two communities, in particular the Hindus and Muslims, and between Hindus and Christians and it is two way street at times. The brunt of those riots is usually borne largely by the minorities, that is the case with minorities in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Iran, America or Brazil.

The good news is that an overwhelming majority of Indians, regardless of their faith or caste will continue to be moderates who care about fellow beings, and focus on taking care of their families.  They (Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs and others) do not hate others who differ from them, they don’t have the bloody time for that,  and as such Islamophobia narrative will not take root in India, unless some opportunists push for it.
Mohammad Imran writes, “Islamophobia defines Muslims as the “Other” and to be feared. This portrays Hindus as peaceful and Muslims as violent.” We are all peaceful with a few among us who are not, so, “ we should give currency to the word “Communal” which reflects the situation, and is understood by all in India.” Islamophobia is not the word applicable in Indian context and we must not use it.

Indian Muslims have done exceptionally well to ward off the Al-Aqaeda and reject the ISIS; it has given a big sense of relief to all Indians that “Our Muslims are with us.” Some two Lakh Imams have condemned terrorism and condemned ISIS.  Good leaders of India brag about Indian Muslims for taking a stand against the extremists from abroad.

While some rejoice (a % from all groups) tearing India apart, let’s focus on putting India together, but never ever deny the problems we face.

The Hindus, Dalits, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians and others must be equally concerned when a few among us try to disturb the social equilibrium of the country. Instead of pointing fingers at the other, we must learn to take the responsibility to fix the problems, while sincerely acknowledging them and getting out of the denial mode.  If you and I can show the courage to use the words “We Indians” and not “them Muslims’ or “them Hindus” or “they are the problem” we would have taken the right step to restore India’s pluralistic ethos.

Should we give currency to the word “Islamophobia” in India? I think not, it is not a wise thing to do, and I appreciate the article for boldly challenging the attempts to establish Islamophobia in India.
