Washington, D.C., Wednesday, December 09, 2015 – The Jewish
Voice for peace organized a Chanukah candle light for justice across the White
House tonight at 5:30 PM.  They called it
Network against Islamophobia for a national Chanukah action.  They will hold this event again on Sunday at
4:00 PM at the same place.

In their letter out to the public, they wrote, “While president Obama is in the
White House celebrating with Israeli President Rivlin on Wednesday, we will be
outside showing that American Jews stand for full equality and freedom for all
people living under Israeli rule. We hope that the President will ask Rivlin
what he is doing to make that a reality for ALL Palestinians.”

The letter continued, “We will be holding nine signs, which, together, are in
the shape of Chanukah menorah. Each sign contains injustice that we recommit
ourselves to challenging.” I remember the following signs, welcoming Syrian
Refugees, black lives matter, anti-Muslim profiling, Jews against Islamophobia
among other signs.  

The media was present, and Melanie from the Boston
University News wire asked me on the tape who I was, and my purpose in being
here.

“I am Mike Ghouse with American Muslim Institution, an organization committed
to building a cohesive America where every American respects the otherness of
others, and accepts the God-given uniqueness of each one of us.  God has created everything in balance and it
is our duty to preserve that balance.”

In
response to a question, “what the presidential candidates are saying about
Muslims,” I responded, “The role of the President is to keep America safe from
outside forces and internal conflicts, and to help Americans achieve in their
pursuit of life, liberty and happiness.

Mr. Trump has trampled on the very fundamental values of our immortal
declaration,   “that all men are created equal, that they are
endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of
Happiness
.”


She asked how difficult it was to cope with what Dr. Carson and Mr. Trump have
said. Indeed, they are making life difficult for themselves, God forbid, if
they are elected, they will have to manage a population that is afraid of each
other.  They are also dumb, if you recall
the Gore v Bush, the difference was approximately 500,000 votes resulting in 5
electoral votes. If they are any smart, they will court nearly 5 -6 million
votes from Jews, Hispanics, Muslims and others and easily increase the chances
of winning. They need to know that bigotry does not pay.

We have to trust in the goodness of Americans, we have come a long way in being
just and fair.  Over the last thirty years;
Americans have never
nominated an extremist as a presidential candidate who was hell bent on pitting
one American against the other,  and who
has messed with the character of our nation. Never!

The damage they are doing to the social fabric of the nation is
unforgivable. 
What JVC is doing tonight is demonstrating against bigotry in an effort to
restore sanity in politics and justice to the average American, hence, I am
here to support them.  If we don’t stand
up for what is right, who will? We have no right to complain if we let negative
forces persist without resistance. 

In response to how would you change the situation, I
said,  we have problems because we don’t
know much about each other, and whatever little we know  is myths about others. Instead of clarifying
those myths, we pile up more myths and create deeper and wider chasm each
passing day. The problems are ours, collectively ours, and we have to solve
them by sitting down across each other, build friendships and learn about each
other. When we find out our aspirations are similar – a life with a decent pay,
nice place to live, good marriage, wonderful kids and a healthy and peaceful
retirement – the conflicts fade and solutions emerge. 
The idea is for us connect with each other,
understand each other, and when we do that, conflicts fade and solutions
emerge.

It was good to see Medea Benjamin,  some of you may not like people who protest,
but remember, they are the most patriotic individuals of the nation, they don’t
want America’s moral standing go down the tube by letting bad things happen.
They should be our heroes.

My shortest message of Hanukkah was, no matter how limited your resources are (like
the oil in the lamp was enough for one day, but the oil miraculously lasted for
eight days) have hope and do the right thing, the goodness of God will be with
you.

The Heartbreaking Truth About Indian Foods That Are Not Indian at All

Being an Indian, at one time, I believed everything originated from India. Now, I accept that everyone thinks of his motherland in the same fashion. 

In High school, I thought my Mothers’ food was the best in the world, there was nothing like it, but when I started sharing the food from the tiffin boxes of other friends, I learned that not only my mother cooked well, but my friends mother also cooked well. Then some restaurants had good food,  then came the foods of other nations.  This is what we call universalizing oneself or broadening the horizons of life.

I am a pluralist in most aspects of life – meaning respecting the otherness of others and accepting the uniqueness of each element of nature.  I am a pluralist in my food habits, and I enjoy every food that is out there with three limitations – cannot eat cheese due to lactose intolerance, cannot have regular milk, and am prejudiced towards pork meat. 

Once, I  thought that the Spanish, Italian, French, and consequently Mexican food had origins in India because they all came to get our spices; hence they developed variations of our foods. No, each nation, each community and each tribe has developed similar things around the world. A mother in normal circumstances knows exactly what to do with her baby whether she is from the Zulu Tribe or lives in Manhattan. 

Though I do not believe in the palmistry, I can never forget what a friend said looking at my palm when I was a teen – that I will be married around  30, that I will  go to a foreign country, will have two kids… and, that I will continue to be blessed with a variety of foods. He was right about almost everything;  though it was a mere coincidence, but certainly, he was right about a few things including food. 

I was an administrator in a catering college in Bangalore called Food Craft Institute, where we trained students to get ready to the upcoming boom in the hospitality industry – we trained Chefs, Bakers, Canners, Waiters, House Keepers, and Receptionists etc. 

Each day was a new menu, and new food. The students would prepare and serve. Some of the best international foods were cooked there – we had Italian, Mexican, French, Japanese, German, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Moroccan and of course some extraordinary Indian dishes. Today, if I see new food some where, I go there, I’ve got to taste it.

Indeed, through visiting different places you come to realize that we all want to Indianize our foods, and perhaps the French see that others have modified their food… does it matter? Pizza is as American as Naan is Indian.

I am always curios about the origins of the food, if someone has done some research, I would like to know about Ethiopian food.  The Dosa we make in South India comes in soft and crisp, and thick to thin varieties.  The Injira bread of Ethiopia is identical to Dosa,  also known as Cheela in India. I discovered, but will have to sit down and search, the grain they make the bread is similar to Ragi – the Rye looking tiny black-to-purple balls of grains, and they do the same, soak the grain overnight and then grind it.

A few months back I was reading that we have had a King in South India with Ethiopian origins! Did he bring the Ragi Mudday (dough balls)? Or did he take Ragi from Karnataka to Ethiopia?

Hey, we could have learned everything from every one, but no one had zero, we gave the Zero to the world, and made all the technological innovations possible.

Hold it! Gregory Gomez is a Native American from the Apache nation, we are friends, and one day we were talking about the plight of Native Americans and loss of pride in the new generation. He shocked the hell out of me, when he said; we have to let our kids know that we gave mathematics and Zero to the world. I argued with him, he said, your records were preserved but ours were destroyed by the marauding missionaries. We gave the Zero to the world! Go figure!

Dr. Mike Ghouse, founder, America Together Foundation (ATF). Dr. Ghouse’s recent book on human rights, Standing Up for Others, was influenced by Rev. Dr. Moon’s lifelong motto “To Live for the Sake of Others.” Many of the problems that exist between ethnic or religious groups are due to a lack of communication, miscommunication or that we learn about each other by listening to third parties and “talking heads.” He spoke about the “Unity Day” programs that his organization hosts to bring together people of all backgrounds and ethnicities and to break down the walls and barriers that tend to divide us. “We are in conflict because we don’t know each other.” He gave the example that if you walk in a neighborhood of ethnic foreigners, you might feel anxious or frightened, yet if just one person greets you, then the tension immediately dissipates. “Better communication is what’s needed. Communication goes both ways. Communication is as much about listening as it is about talking. Don’t be scared to reach out to someone else. Respect the other person, even if they have a different background, language or faith.” All faiths have salutations which encourage a positive message. Hindus: “Namaste,” Jews: “Shalom,” pagans: “Hail to Mother Earth,” Muslims: “Salaam Alaikum,” Christians: “Peace be with you.” “Religion is not the problem,” he said. “It’s how the individual practices that religion. He created each of us to be unique, and therefore He gave us each a unique DNA and wants us each to relate to Him.”

Washington, D.C., December 7, 2015 – The San Bernardino mass shooting and the horrific loss of life and injuries last week have prompted serious soul searching among Muslims across the nation about the causes of home grown radicalization and how to counter it.

We stand with the President and his plans to eliminate the vicious ideology of Daesh, also known as ISIS.  “We agree with President Obama that ISIS does not speak for Islam, and American Muslims unequivocally reject ISIS’ hateful and misguided ideology” stated Ambassador Islam A. Siddiqui, President of American Muslim Institution.

While we mourn the deaths of fellow Americans in the 355 mass shootings this year, we particularly mourn the loss of life and resulting injuries in the San Bernardino mass shooting,  because a Muslim and his wife were responsible for the mass murder.   

It is the responsibility of all Americans to help law enforcement officials in maintaining law and order and to assure the safety of every citizen. It is the duty of all of us to fight against radicalization through education and community engagement and work on promoting peace and harmony.  As American Muslims we have a greater responsibility in countering radicalization and violent extremism.

San Bernardino Terrorism is condemned unequivocally and its repercussions to be limited  

Washington, DC, December 3, 2015 – First of all, our hearts go out to the families of the victims and their loved ones, 14 people have lost their lives to terrorism and another 17 are seriously injured. We pray with our hearts, souls and minds, asking God to guide us all to restore sanity.
It is time for the responsible agencies to study the backgrounds of the suspected terrorists Syed Farook and Tafsheen Malik to understand the sources and causes for their behavior, it is a serious breach of security and we have to take corrective actions. 

It is our duty and collective responsibility to keep law and order and faithfully guard the safety of every citizen. Hate is one of the many sources of disrupting the peace in a society and it is our duty to track down the source of such hate and work on mitigating it. We have an obligation to maintain a balance in the society.

As Americans we have deliberated on this, and we have to find solutions to the Gun violence. 

As Americans, our attitude should be, “You murdered innocent people, and you are going to pay for it, whatever the course of law allows us to impose on you, we will.”

We should not be bamboozled into believing that the criminal’s religion inspired him to do that, and spend time finding faults with his religion. He not only murdered, but is also making a fool out of us.  Why bark at the religion, it is an intangible which you cannot shoot, beat, kick, slit, hang or bury, what is that futile exercise then for? Our legitimate goal is to restore trust in the society by punishing the criminal.

No one should look to Muslims for the acts of terrorists, just as no one should slap the blame of a murderer on his family, friends, community, and mayor of the town or pastor of his church.

No one is responsible for a criminal’s acts but him. Blaming religion has not done any good to anyone, but crated greater chaos, distrust and apprehension.  Restoring peace and sanity should be our goal.

… The other day, three individuals attacked me in unison about holding the protest against Terrorists on the steps of Lincoln Memorial; all was going good, but the criticism unnerved me. It was a major mile stone and I did not want to make a mistake. I took a deep breath and meditated for a few minutes to restore myself.
A brilliant idea came to my mind; I placed my father’s picture in front me, an affectionate man who had no enemies, even those who thought were his enemies, mellowed with his caring non-hostile affectionate attitude towards them. I gazed at his picture for a while with admiration, in turn I became affectionate in my response to my future friends, one of them apologized later, the other two have not yet, but that’s fine, the hostility seems to has ceased.

This morning, I woke up at 2:30 AM, and could not sleep, so I sat up looking at the things I needed to do this week, reworking the priorities. I looked up, and found my Dad was looking at me and telling me something powerful; I heard him, son, remove my picture, you don’t need me as a symbol to calm you down, go ahead and take it down. He said don’t you worship me, I am gone long time ago, take the picture down but keep me alive in your mind if you want! I hesitated, but took down not only his picture, but out went Mahatma Gandhi’s picture as well. There is nothing wrong with that, but being independent is more important, being inspired without symbolism or idolatry is much better.
I keep wondering why Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) insisted on not having his portrait or sculpt his bust, when every King or famous person likes to see his ego boosting images plastered all over. He did not want to be the object of admiration but remain an inspiration, so he said, I will be dead and gone like everyone else, and you keep honoring the eternal energy that created you, and the energy that wants you to keep a balance within you and with others around you. Harmony is they name, that is indeed God’s will.
However, I still have the pictures of Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Pope Frances, MLK and my Father on the facebook page, I see them each time I open the facebook, and they inspire me. My main inspirers are Muhammad and Jesus, and I don’t intend to imagine them in any fashion but remembering and following their message of love, equality, mercy and humility. It’s 3:23 AM.

I was in Brooke Stone store in Charlotte, desperately searching for of a battery operated mini-speaker to address gatherings in open fields like the one we did on the steps of Lincoln Memorial. The sales person could not explain the item…. An angel James ‘Barue’ Wilson flies right in and explains the product. By the way, he is a flight Attendant with American and knew everything you wanted to know about the product, he had just bought it… he spent a good 15 minutes showing me how to use the product. I bought the system and it is called the big blue party speaker. Good people are all around you. Thank you Barue’ I am posting this on my Face book as well asTheGhouseDiary.com
At the Sports Authority, the manager walks over to help me, and he is Robert in the Alexandria Store. He understood what I was looking for; a battery operated speaker system as there is no electricity to hook up at Lincoln Memorial event the next day. He called 5 stores in Tyson Corner, Rockville and other places for such system as well as the mega phone… That is an outstanding customer service; we did not find the product, but his willingness to help makes me shop there first. Good job Robert.
On the steps of the Lincoln center appear two angels, I was the first one waving the flag and then these two young men walk up and offered to help. They held the banner from nearly 1 hour 30 minutes, and don’t know how many people at Lincoln center came and took pictures with the Banner.
How do you thank them all? My way of thanking them is spend time and write a note about them. We have to encourage what is good!

When a few Indians hear the following phrases;
Growing intolerance,  
Modi has failed India, 
RSS is emboldened with extremism
Hindutva…
They go ballistic and busy themselves with hating, cursing and throwing insults, at Muslims and moderate majority of Hindus with common sense.
 I know for sure they are not getting this from Hinduism, but they may be getting it from the RSS ideology of Hindutva, which has nothing to do with Hinduism just as the Islamists have nothing to do with Islam; Neocons to Christianity or Violent Zionism to Judaism.
As Indians of all faiths, traditions and political affiliations, we need to come together and discourage what is divisive and encourage what is inclusive.
The attacks on Aamir Khan, Girish Karnad and other intellectuals show the growing intolerance among a few fellow Indians.  What hurts us is the Indian Americans, a few of whom are more intolerant than the ones in India. I read comments that make me puke at some of them, they have lived in America for a long time, and yet they have not grown up to accept the inclusivism of America. What did they learn here?  Hamare Bhai waisay ke waisay he Rahe!

These very men criticized the UPA government to the hilt, and now they cannot tolerate criticism of Modi’s government, does not amount to criticizing India. It’s pathetic that they equate India with Modi, it does not enter their minds that Modi’s come and go, but India remains an eternal society. 
We cannot let a few among us tear apart our motherland and hurt her togetherness.  We cannot become a divisive crazy nation like some of the nations we don’t appreciate.
I seek your help in writing a white paper, and compile all the intolerant statements made by our leaders and public leaders, as well as the Indian Americans.  
Pull the statements made by Girish Karnad, Amir Khan, Arundhati Roy, and the intellectuals across the spectrum. 
Let this be a document for us to refer to,  and our next generation to see what we have done in preventing destruction of our motherland. We owe it to our motherland to protect her pluralistic ethos.

On Friday, November 20, 2015, the American Muslims took a bold step in their journey towards being-one with fellow Americans.  


The American Muslim Institution (AMI) led the demonstrations against Terrorism and Daesh on the steps of Lincoln Memorial;  this historic location was chosen to mirror the efforts of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who brought a positive change to the American civil society with his immortal, “I have a dream speech” on the very same steps.

It was indeed a symbolic event for American Muslims, and the foundation for a positive change was laid.The next event was held within hours across the White House by ADAMS Center and another one by APPNA at Dupont Circle the very next day. Now, it is gathering momentum.  

The apprehensions and the conflicts Muslims feel is a result of actions and reactions feeding each other. The Media is blamed for amplifying the negative portrayal of Muslims, while our own attitudes have also contributed towards to the feeding frenzy. It is time to change the equation.  

Mother Teresa had said if you want to make peace with your enemies, go talk with them. Praise the Lord, we have begun the process.  Media is not our enemy; they are merely reflecting the fears of a few, some of them have not taken the time to differentiate between religion and its followers, and have mistaken us with the Daesh, Talibans, Al-Qaeda and their ilk. It is our duty to correct these gross errors on a continual basis. God willing, we hope to conduct seminars and workshops with the media to rectify some of the false perceptions about us. Good and healthy communications can always pave the way for better understanding.

We hear, “the proof is in the pudding”, indeed it is. In the following links (four videos), listen to the tone of Sean Hannity, Stuart Varney, and Richard Ray of Fox News. They have responded to positive engagement. There is a new emerging language of understanding and support. What has not worked is disengagement; I would rather engage and fail than cause us to dig in our heels.

The American Muslim Institution is formed with three specific goals – work with the media, mitigate Islamophobia and speed up the process of integration. We hope to get to the point where fellow Americans will see Muslims as their neighbors and fellow citizens, committed to fight against violent extremism and to protect the homeland. No more them against us, it will be all of us working together for a prosperous, secure and cohesive America. . 


Since August 4th, we have been written up in nearly 300 media outlets, this event at Lincoln Memorial has produced nearly 60 Media reports-videos and write ups.  You can Google “American Muslim Institution.” Insha Allah, we will upload all of them including our own video and pictures on this site www.AmericanMuslimInstitution.org  within a few weeks.

An integrated society functions effectively when we are all on the same page with our uniqueness.  When we demonstrated against Terrorism and Daesh on the steps of Lincoln Memorial, it resonated with fellow Americans; both of us were against the monsters.  When we celebrate 4th of July in the biggest possible way, it will resonate with fellow Americans; both of us become fellow patriots.  When armed protesters head towards Mosques with a confused intent, we can greet them with kindness and caring hospitality, hoist American flags on our mosques grounds, serve grilled hot dogs and water, the hostility will dissipate and they will view us as fellow Americans instead of perceived hostility. We must connect with them instead alienating them. 
Of course, I suggest our Friday Sermons to teach us in dealing with conflicts in the most simple way.

Islamophobia? Right now 63% of Americans don’t see Muslims favorably; we can bring this number down to 32% in 3 years. If you are willing to do certain basic things. I will be happy to give a talk and present practical action plan to your group,  listing seven little and seven big things we can do to shape our future with fellow Americans. We cannot postpone this and live in misery for another decade.

Hannity plan: A Syrian Safe Zone is the most ideal situation for the refugees.
November 25, 2015, New York — Sean Hannity’s radio show is broadcasted across the nation thru 250 affiliate stations.  Brigitte Gabrielle and Mike Ghouse were his guests on the show to discuss the Syrian refugee problems. 

Hannity acknowledged and appreciated the demonstration rally Muslims held on the steps of Lincoln Memorial, a symbolic event to condemn the Daesh, Al-Qaeda, Boko Haram and other terrorist outfits wreaking havoc in Syria and Iraq, and to express solidarity with the people of France, Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, Nigeria and other places who are victims of terrorism.


When Hannity opened the topic of Syrian Refugees and proposed establishment of a “Syrian safe zone: a secure no-fly zone where refugees could be housed, fed, and clothed by the international community” – his guest Mike Ghouse instantly saw the wisdom in that proposal and supported it whole heartedly.  Both the host and guests were surprised at this agreement.
When you study the refugee issues from Vietnam, Palestine, Lebanon, Ghana, Iraq, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, South Korea, Afghanistan, Rohingya, Israel, Native Lands and other places, one common theme emerges – No human wants to be forced out of his/her home. The longing for mother never dies, and no one desires forced separation from his or her mother.

The humility of getting kicked out of your own home is the most difficult pain to endure. The Syrian and Iraqi refugees are going thru a very painful experience and shame on the Governments of US, Hungary and other nations who are letting their representatives callously rejecting the refugees. 
The alternative championed by Sean Hannity is “the most ideal situation,” responded Ghouse on Tuesday’s Sean Hannity Show. “The Syrian people don’t really want to leave their country, it is their home. They’re driven out by these extremists, terrorists, ISIS and they have no choice, they’re running for their lives.”
Rejection of people in dire needs amounts to callousness, and stripping their dignity.

Given that,  Hannity’s plan is ideal in many ways – 1) It gives hope to the people in despair, 2) Restores faith in humanity, 3) preserves their dignity and self worth,  4) prevents future dictators from chasing people out of their homes and 5) respect for the people of the United States and lastly an opportunity to value democracy.

Every time the refugees are humiliated, Dr. Ghouse goes back into his reflective mood, shaped by the most gruesome scenes from the Holocaust pogroms. The look on the faces of those men and women when they were marched towards the pit to be shot into it is painful and indelible. Their expression was, we thought you were friends and caring Christians, why are you not standing up for us, speaking up for us? They chose to die in dignity rather than beg for life (Huffington post).  When the ship MS St. Louis turned 908 Jewish refugees imagine the humiliation they felt. That is the ugliest kind of humanity expressed by the men and women in the US Congress and Senate this time around with the Syrian refugees.
Given that, Sean Hannity’s plan is ideal. It upholds the dignity of the helpless; no one wants to leave their home.

While many American oppose the resettlement of tens of thousands of refugees from the Middle East, a question still remains: what is to be done with them? One of the alternative plans that has been proposed has been the establishment of a Syrian safe zone: a secure no-fly zone where refugees could be housed, fed, and clothed by the international community.
The plan–which Sean has championed since the crisis began–recently gained support from an unexpected source: Muslim activist and president of the America Together Foundation, Mike Ghouse.
“That is the most ideal situation,” responded Ghouse on Tuesday’s Sean Hannity Show. “The Syrian people don’t really want to leave their country, it is their home. They’re going driven out by these extremists, terrorists, ISIS and they have no choice, they’re running for their lives.”
