Radio Pluralism in Washington DC

Comments Off on Radio Pluralism in Washington DC

Most of the talk shows cater to the conservatives, and a few to the progressives. What we don’t have are the talk shows for the Moderate Americans. It is time to connect with the Moderate Majority and bring common sense and pluralism to politics. Our Radio show would offer pluralistic solutions on issues of the day, as does our blog Pluralism News.

David Gold was a conservative talk show host in Dallas in the early 90’s and happened to be my tenant but refused to take me on the air. He was blunt, “Mike, my income is based on ratings, if I take you on the air, you will dilute my ratings by bringing reason into the conversation, and we cannot produce a show without tensions.” I understood that, and went ahead and got my own Radio show for 7 years until it was feasible.

In our show, we gave everyone a shot to express his or her opinion; we did not censor free speech. If we need sustainable solutions, all of us have to place our cards on the table. We are considering bringing the show to Washington, DC through your support and public funding.

Our program in Dallas was about religious pluralism, and we did 104 hours on Christianity, Hinduism and Islam respectively, and 52 hours each on Atheism, Bahá’í, Buddhism, Jainism, Judaism, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism and a combined 53 hours on Native American and pagan traditions. We will bring that back as well. It shall be a feast to the moderate majority of Americans.

Who Speaks for American Muslims

Comments Off on Who Speaks for American Muslims

The overwhelming majority of Muslims are moderate. However, there are not enough speakers out there to articulate what these Muslims actually believe and practice, and their significant contributions to America.

Those who had a morally corrupt agenda filled the gap and spoke negatively about Islam. Unfortunately, their version became the currency and so many Americans fell for it in the absence of the right information.

Everyone wants to see a cohesive America where no one has to live in apprehension, tension or fear each other.  The Center for Pluralism, also known as the America Together Foundation has embarked on a mission to train speakers to deliver the message of Islam, as practiced by American Muslims –which is distinct from Islam practiced elsewhere in the world.

There is no doubt that a few “Islamophobes” are out to get Muslims; they are well paid to do so. But in the same vein, Muslims would not be well served to believe that “all of them” are of the same ilk.  These Islamophobes are simply afraid of what the “Islamists” are doing in the name of Islam and worried sick about its ramifications for America. Rationally they know it is not in America, but still the phobia persists.

We have an obligation to listen to our fellow citizens and a moral duty to allay their fears.
Pulitzer Prize winner Judith Miller speaks out on Fox News, “It is the fear that so many Muslims who are moderates, the fear they have of speaking out and the reaction of their own community. Until we win that battle inside, the Jihadists will take center stage.  We are going to go on creating the impression that the Islamists Jihadists are the majority and they are not.”  Brigitte Gabrielle of Act for America adds, “Where are the funders of people like Mike – is there not a mega millionaire in the Islamic world who can say, you know what I believe in your moderate message and can give Mike $5 Million dollars to build the grass root organization?”

Here is a video: https://www.facebook.com/MikeGhouse/videos/1438210749532124/.

The right leaning Muslims curse Gabrielle, Spencer and Geller out, while the left discounts them, leaving the moderates to deal with the issue. What I hear them say is simply this: Where are the mainstream Muslims to speak out about what they practice? The mainstream Muslims have reached the point of zero tolerance towards extremism and have the desire to assertively seek to push the literalists to see the essence of Islam.

The most sustainable way to counter Islamophobia and violent extremism is through education. Our programs are designed to bring Americans together; the more we see each other in social, cultural, civic, religious, political and other settings, the less divisiveness there will be, resulting in fewer misunderstandings and misperceptions between us.

This is the Islam of Moderate Muslims.

Muslims are not arrogant and do not reject the validity of other spiritual paths. They believe that Islam is one of the many spiritual paths that bring support to an individual in dealing with the difficulties of life.

The Quran is a book of guidance to restore harmony within oneself, and harmony with others through a variety of values listed below.

Moderate Muslims are mainstream Muslims; they have no barriers between them and God’s creation.  They are free from prejudice towards others.

They have an inherent sense of equality with respect to men and women.

They do not flaunt their religion at every opportunity.  They will seldom say you will go to hell.

Social life is easy with them, they mix and mingle.  They will go to a bar with you, and while you drink alcohol, they will quietly drink water or soda and not make a production out of their religion.  If you invite them for dinner, they quietly eat what suits them and you don’t have to be stressed out about what to cook for them.  They appreciate it if you are conscious that Muslims don’t eat pork products.

They are not hell bent on converting or missionizing others, as they see other paths as equally valid. They will not engage in the upmanship battle either.

As most White, Black, Jewish, Hindu, Sikh or Christian parents do,   Muslim parents will neither compel their children to observe religion strictly, nor do they throw fits if their kids marry outside their faiths. Personalizing faith is an America value!

Most Muslims may not even talk about religion, it is not important to them, what is important is knowing and caring for their neighbors and respecting and honoring fellow beings, consistent with the Golden Rule.

Sharia is not coming to America nor do American Muslims want the kind of Public Sharia practiced in Saudi Arabia and Iran. American Muslims believe in personal Sharia – that is how you pray, fast, share what you have, care for fellow humans. Let’s “clear the air” of misunderstandings for all Americans. We need to put this fear behind us and focus on prosperity and living our lives.  American Muslims uphold, protect, defend and celebrate the values enshrined in our American Constitution. Our faith reinforces the idea of one nation with liberty and justice for all.

These characteristic accurately describe the vast majority of mainstream American Muslims.  They quietly practice their faith; and don’t feel the need to make a show of their religion.

The process of telling the American Muslim story has begun.  It started with Sean Hannity of Fox News – he was the first one to bring a mainstream Muslims on his show.  Before that, Muslims were usually represented by bearded men wearing religious costumes. Let me clarify, the beard and Hijab are not the determinants of one’s moderation or religiosity, they are cultural in nature and are a personal choice.

Gone are the days when you were not Muslim enough to speak about Islam if you did not wear the beard or hijab; did not throw in a ton of Arabic phrases; and did not wear some exotic sort of symbolic body and head covering associated with Islam.

What Islam is not is ruling others or compelling others to believe against their will. The Quran is clear on that, no one bears the burdens of others and no one is responsible for other’s actions. What Islam is, is freedom to believe as you will, and freedom to choose between right and wrong.  And it is very much about taking responsibility for one’s words and actions.

American Islam is minding your own faith, and letting others mind theirs.

Islam is about spirituality – that is, becoming one with nature (God) where all walls fall that divide you from the others.

Islam is pluralism – that is, respecting the otherness of others and accepting the God-given uniqueness of each one of us.  You’ll learn all about this in our class, replete with references from the Quran and the prophet’s practices.  It simply can’t get more authentic than that!

THE NEW SPEAKERS ON ISLAM

Nothing will change without intention and effort.  If we wish for speakers who reflect the values of the majority, we have to find and encourage them.

Fortunately, we have begun this process.

We teach the traditional five pillars of Islam, which are the personal aspect of Islam and a part of being a Muslim.  But our focus is on the major part of being a Muslim, and that is the practices and values that contribute towards building cohesive societies.

The following values are taught:  First Amendment, responsibility and accountability, truthfulness, justice, forgiveness, caring for fellow beings, humility, equality, and pluralism, freedom of speech, harmony, and civil dialogue.  In a nutshell, this is Islam.

Many people, and many Muslims themselves, have been hungry for speakers who spoke about the values of Islam, and now we have taken the first step towards it.

We have just completed the first course, held in metro Washington, DC.  Subject to funding, the next course will be a three weekend 15 hours course to be held in May 2017 also in DC.  The training is open to people of all faiths, and indeed, at least one non-Muslim has already completed it.   Anyone with the knowledge of good universal human values and a heart for harmony within the human family can pick up the training and speak for Islam, the American Islam.

If you are looking for speakers on Islam, we have a good lineup available.  They graduated from the Muslim Speakers training program and are ready to speak on the values of Islam, the values that contribute towards making the world a better place for every human being.  They speak of Islam as it is, the inclusive Islam practiced by contemporary American Muslims.

Thanks to the support from Montgomery County Muslim Foundation, Muslim Community Center of Silver Spring and American Muslim Institution for the sponsorship of the respective classes.  We also thank Imam Faizul Khan (Rituals), Imam Ali Siddiqui (History), Imam Dain Abdul-Fattah Johnson (Hadith),  Nathan Walker (Fist Amendment),  Falah Shams (Denominations),  Rabia Baig (Youth), Alejandro Beutel (Radicalization & CVE),  Haris Tarin (Terrorism,), Katherine Kerr (Media Training) and Mike Ghouse (Quran, Pluralism, Sharia, Islamophobia, Islamic Values) who put the program together.

Here is a statement from each of six graduates about what they can speak about.

Charles Stevenson:  “I can speak as a Catholic friend of Islam and as a childhood son of Northern Virginia’s rural American South, and as a citizen passionate about building an American future built on the rocklike foundation of harmony in diversity.”

Rina Hafiz: “I am a bridge of understanding to help other cross over and experience the view points of both the west and Islam.  I’ve loved and enjoyed the diversity having lived on both sides of the globe; I am an American, a soccer mom and a Muslim woman who feels empowered by my faith.”

Rashed Hasan: I can speak as an American Muslim Professional, who studied engineering at MIT and business at The Wharton School, and have taken a deep dive into the Qur’an to understand Islam at its core in terms of values and principles, not just rituals.  I am currently publishing a series – Removing the Middleman – putting values and principles from the Qur’an in the context of our contemporary lives and societies.    It will give you a sense of what to expect when I speak about Islam, religious plurality and our common humanity for our generation.

Fatima Argun: I can speak about the value of diversity in today’s America and why it is important for shaping cohesive, collaborative and resilient communities.  To that end, interfaith dialogue and true understanding of those in a community that are different than oneself is at the heart of creating a more harmonious, peaceful world.

Shagufta Hasan:  “I can speak on how it was to grow up in the suburbs of Pittsburgh as a young Muslim girl, and later as a mother helping my children understand and navigate the challenges of their adolescent lives and guiding them to focus on the values and morals that are taught in Islam to become a good human being.”

The ISIS Genocide of Yazidi, Christians and Shia

Comments Off on The ISIS Genocide of Yazidi, Christians and Shia

Marking the Anniversary of the US Government’s recognition of this ISIS Genocide in Iraq and Syria.

March 16, 2017 – Washington, DC at Capitol Hill.  The Genocide Coalition is partnerships of organizations and advocates for the religious minorities in Iraq and Syria targeted by ISIS for genocide.  ISIS has been pushed back, the but the Genocide continues. Many of the indigenous religious and ethnic communities targeted by ISIS are still unable to return to their homes – and many, nearly three years later, are still not receiving US aid. Before peace and reconciliation efforts can begin, the victims of genocide must be able to return to their homes safely.

Sitting through listening to over a dozen speakers, I hear the same words again and again, I was stuck when Zina Kiryakos, Christian Human Rights council stated that, “7000 years of civilization was destroyed, millions of Chaldean Christians were forced to leave….” I was thinking about the Genocides of the Native Americans as we had commemorated it along with other Genocides. I was picturing the whole list of Genocides through out the human history. Is any nation, any social, political, religious, ethnic or racial group free from being perpetrators?   I need to study these attitudes in terms of majoritarian arrogance rather than their religious or political affiliations. The stinky attitudes towards the others who are weak, powerless and numerical minorities. After 12 years of commemorating Holocaust and many genocides, I feel the pain of all people and I am thankful to God that every one’s pain is my pain too.

Call to Action: The Genocide Coalition calls on the Trump Administration and the international community to take a swift action to stabilize Iraq; to identify and punish those who aided and abetted ISIS in its campaign of genocide and terror; and to appoint to key positions qualified persons who will pursue these and related humanitarian and national security priorities.

There is no doubt Muslims are a maligned lot as some of them have been on the perpetrator’s side at least in the last few decades. As a society, we need to keep our focus on the individuals and cults instead of groups, we should not buy into stereotyping of any kind. If we buy one, we might as well buy justify crimes against each one of us.

I attended the Genocide Coalition at Capitol Hill yesterday sponsored by IDC in defense of Christians.  It was about the Genocide of Christians, Yazidi and Shia Muslims. It was very difficult to understand how minorities are being harassed in every nation and community. Over a dozen Speakers spoke. Nadia Murad, the Yazidi woman spoke, she was raped multiple times by terrorists in the name of Islam, it was not easy, but she was graceful and did not show any bitterness and instead was seeking solutions to end the genocides of not only her people but others too.

I was tensed up for a few moments and quickly recovered. Who will speak for Muslims that condemn these cults. How do we communicate, why did I not seek to speak?  Then the big relief came when I saw Zainab Al-Suwaij’ name on the list and she spoke, Muslims need to be a part of the society in good times and sad times.

Since there was no room for others to speak or comment, I was hesitant, but doing the right thing is the right thing to do. I asked Prof Robert Destro to speak for a minute and he granted and I kept it to the minute. I said, “I just want to share that the American Muslims have dedicated a Friday Sermon and prayed for Yazidis, Christians and Shia and Muslims are constantly standing up for human rights of others”. Here are the two article in Huffington post.

1. Muslims to Dedicate Friday Sermons for the Safety of Christians, Yazidis, Shia and   – http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mike-ghouse/muslims-to-dedicate-frida_b_5679118.html

2. President Obama, Go Ahead ‘Degrade and Destroy’ ISIS – http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mike-ghouse/president-obama-go-ahead-_b_5765264.html

3. Standing up for others – www.StandingupforOthers.com

Destro concluded some thing to this effect, “More Muslims are victimized and slaughtered by ISIS than the others, and we are all in this together against the ISIS.” The event was orderly and no one took more than the allotted time.

A good line up of speakers: Nadia Murad, a survivor of Yazidi rapes and torture, Congresswoman Anna Eshoo (D-CA), Congressman Fortenberry (R-NE), Zina Kiryakos – Christian Human rights council, Phillipe Nassif – In Defense of Christians, Andrew Walther – Knights of Columbus, Robert Nicholson – Philos Project, Naomi Kikoler – USHMM, Adlay Kejjan – Yazidi American Women Organization, Zainab Al Suwaijj – American Islamic Congress, Faith McDonnel – IRD,  Steve Colecchi – USCCB, Kristina Arriaga – USCRIF, Stephen Hollighshead – Iraq Haven, Professor Robert Destro, and Ninia Shea – Hudson Institute.

This is a weekly or a daily story for me, and I am sure you are the only Muslim in some events and felt relieved. Now, why don’t you attend these events? You don’t get paid for this, neither do I…? If you believe you have to serve the community, getting out there is better than talking non-stop in social gatherings.

Build relationships before you build a Mosque.

I met with Tom Wheeler, acting Asst Attorney General (Trump Appointee) for the Civil Rights division of Department of Justice. He assures me that the rule of law will prevail and not the whims of the individuals.  I am scheduling a meeting with him at the Muslim Community Center in Silver Spring to address the Muslim concerns.

Permits to build Mosques are continually being denied across America and the DOJ is standing with Muslims’s right to build mosque in every case. The question to Muslims is how long should laws of the land carry them? We need to build relationships before we build a mosque. We are too eager to show off our mosque or end up adding to lasting resentments in the community. Is this what Muslims want? If not, let’s do the right things that are sustainable.

1. Islamic Center of Basking Ridge v. Township of Bernard has 47 hearings that failed
2. County of Culpepper in VA – Mosque denied on the pretext of sewage easement
3. Bensalem Township, PA – rezoning request was denied
4. City of Sterling Heights, MI – Anti-Muslim animus
5. Bayonne, NJ – permit denied
6. It is a daily affair…

Thanks to many of the established mosques around the nation, they have built good relationships with their neighbors, that is indeed the Islamic thing to do.

How do we change perceptions about Muslims?

There is no doubt that a few “Islamophobes” are out to get Muslims; they are well paid to do so. What is the Muslim Priority?

All the wealth we have and continue to devour is meaningless if that is not going to give a sense of security to us, our kids and grand kids. If we don’t act now, we may not even sleep in our graves in peace.  Money does not buy security we need to quit being materialistic. It is time for Muslims to put a hold on building a mosque, and focus on doing things that bring long term security through building relationships. Once you are secure and others are equally secure, then do whatever you want, everyone will join you.

Get ready to participate in Civic (Memorial Day and July 4th) Religious (Wisdom of Masters, Understanding Religions), Cultural (Thanksgiving), Social and political (Conservative and progressive meetings) programs. The more we know each other the fewer problems we will have with others. Take a look at the list of things we are doing at the Center for Pluralism.

Unless we are a part of the society, we will always remain on the sidelines.  You have to feel in your guts, this is my land.  Take a look at our events and participate, volunteer and sponsor them.

Let’s Cherish America!

This weekly bulletin comes to you from the Center for Pluralism, an organization committed to building a cohesive America, where no American needs to feel alienated or afraid of the other.

We need to reassure each other, including disappointed White Americans as others, that together as Americans, we are committed to safeguarding the American way of life for everyone.  No American needs to worry about losing his or her way of life.  As Americans we uphold, protect, defend and celebrate the values enshrined in our Constitution.

We will continue to initiate and support actions to cherish and preserve our shared American values. Join us in small steps in practicing pluralism in religion, politics, society and culture and be a catalyst for a safe, secure and prosperous America for each one of us.

CFP is a Muslim initiative but not a Muslim organization, it is for all Americans.  Islam is as much a part of CFP as Atheism, Hinduism, Paganism or any other ism including the Native American traditions.

Get ready to participate in Civic (Memorial Day and July 4th) Religious (Wisdom of Masters, Understanding Religions), Cultural (Thanksgiving), Social and political (Conservative and progressive meetings) programs. The more we know each other the fewer problems we will have with others.

Let’s open our hearts, minds and souls to restore and cherish America.

Reaching out to the disappointed White folks

We need to reach out to the white folks who feel alienated from the mainstream. They are the most neglected but the most powerful group in America Today, they put Donald Trump in the White House and they can dethrone him if he does not fulfill and treat all Americans on an equal footing.  We will fail miserably if we don’t reach out to them. Let’s build alliances with all Americans for the common good, and not, never against any American.

It is worth watching this video… and I have written a few articles about it. It was our collective fault that we ignored the white folks who equally faced the difficult economic times. Sometimes, facts don’t matter, emotion does. This video is worth watching – I want to hug them, they are good people caught in economic turmoil and are frustrated about the situation.

Would you join me – at least one from each faith to visit McDowell county in W. Virginia and break bread with the folks there and assure them that we are with them and we will do whatever we can to help them? We are in this together and have to care for each other.  No more talk, only action. We will rent a vehicle and share the cost unless someone wants to sponsor it.

Media Training to Speak on Islam

The purpose of this course is to train men and women, youth and seniors to speak about Islam as practiced by American Muslims in Public Square.  Program is open to every American. This is the third and final session of the course. In the other two courses the basics of Islam and how they contribute to the well being of our communities we taught.

Katherine Kerr and Mike Ghouse will provide training about dealing with the media and responding to crises. We will carry the program forward empowering students not only with Islamic knowledge but also knowledge about other faiths. One of my assignments with the American Muslim Institution was to establish training programs.

Do American Muslims Want Sharia?

American Muslims owe it to fellow Americans to clarify the myths about Sharia. We hope to mitigate this fear through a symposium with the Imams and Islamic scholars on the one hand, and those who oppose Sharia on the other. Sharia in America is a moot point, but as Muslims we have miserably failed to communicate to fellow Americans. We have to put this behind us and focus on living our lives instead of these non-stop frustrations to one and irritation to the other.

Our budget is $15,000.00 – It is a serious responsibility to pass on a better social environment for our kids and grand kids. If we don’t do it, who will? We need sponsors; if you are serious about putting this behind, us, please call me.

Pluralism News – a weekly bulletin from the Center for pluralism

Can we live securely and leave that legacy to our Children?

How do we bring sense to the divisiveness and feel secure in living your daily lives?  Knowledge about each other leads to understanding and understanding ‘leads’ to acceptance of the other.

Our programs are designed to bring Americans Together; the more often we see each other in social, cultural, civic, religious, Political and other settings, the stronger the antidote would be against divisiveness, resulting in fewer misunderstandings and misperceptions between us.

We need to reassure each other, including the disconnected ones among the White Americans, that together as Americans, we are committed to safeguarding the American way of life.  No American needs to worry about losing his or her way of life.  As Americans we uphold, protect, defend and celebrate the values enshrined in our Constitution.

We will continue to bring non-stop actions in practicing pluralism in religion, politics, society and culture and be a catalyst for a safe and a secure America for each one of us.

Hinduism, why should you learn about it?

Understanding the essence of Hinduism
When: Tuesday, March 7, 2017 1:00 PM- 3:30 PM
Where: The Church of Scientology National Affairs Office,

RSVP at –  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/hinduism-understanding-hinduism-seminar-tickets-32047632331

Why do you want to learn about Hinduism?  When we live as neighbors, work as fellow workers, study as students, players, activists and inhabitants in the same city and in the same community, it behooves us to learn about each other’s beliefs, motivations, moments of celebrations, devotions or commemorations. The more we know about the other, the less mythical they would become forging a friendly environment for all of us to function effectively in whatever we do.http://centerforpluralism.com/hinduism-seminar-in-dc/

Understanding the essence of religions, all religions is our 3rd series of 13 religions in 13 monthly workshops.  They are all in alphabetical order – All workshops are listed at:  http://centerforpluralism.com/workshops/

Do American Muslims Want Sharia?

American Muslims owe it to fellow Americans to clarify the myths about Sharia. We hope to mitigate this fear through a conference with the Imams and Islamic scholars on the one hand, and those who make it their business to oppose Sharia on the other hand. We have put this behind and focus on living our lives instead of this non-stop frustrations to one and irritation to the other.

Media Training for Muslims

The purpose of this course is to train men and women, youth and seniors to speak about Islam as practiced by American Muslims in public square.  Program is open to every American. This is the third and final session of the course. In the other two courses the basics of Islam were taught and how they contribute to the well being of our communities.

15 spots are available on a first come first serve basis. All are welcome.  There is a shortage of speakers to speak about Islam in places of worship, Civic centers, Public Safety departments, Homeland Security, Work Places, Schools, universities and the media and hope the community welcomes these new speakers.

Katherine Kerr and I will train about dealing with the media and responding to crises. This is my final responsibility with the American Muslim Institution.  The training program may continue with AMI, but most certainly, we will carry the program forward empowering students not only with Islamic knowledge but also knowledge about other faiths.

Its on Saturday, March 11, 2107 between 11:00 and 4:00 PM – Serious inquiries only – text with your name, interest to Mike Ghouse at (214) 325-1916 and we will send you the address and information.

Did President Trump listen to our suggestion?

President Trump’s first few sentences in his address to the joint session on February 28, 2017 were as follow;

“Tonight, as we mark the conclusion of our celebration of Black History Month, we are reminded of our Nation’s path toward civil rights and the work that still remains. Recent threats targeting Jewish Community Centers and vandalism of Jewish cemeteries, as well as last week’s shooting in Kansas City, remind us that while we may be a Nation divided on policies, we are a country that stands united in condemning hate and evil in all its forms.”
.
Here are the first few sentences in my letter given to the President through Matt Schlapp, Chairman of the Conservative Union (C-PAC), Vice President Pence, and innumerable emails to the White House.
.
“Fellow Americans, you chose me to be your president, and now I ask you to help me do the right thing for the good of all Americans. Listen carefully; stop those people who are making bomb threats against fellow Americans, particularly against the Jewish community Centers, which is not acceptable. We will hunt them down and punish them accordingly.  Stop them from harassment of Jews, Muslims, Sikhs, Immigrants, and African Americans…..”

We have a lot of work planned, I will be happy to mail you a tiny brochure summarizing the work we are doing.  Need your physical address to mail.

We are making several efforts to reach out to Congressmen and Senators, we are not asking them to do a favor, but just asking them to be a catalyst in shaping our nation. This weekly bulletin comes to you from the Center for Pluralism. The Center for Pluralism is about building a cohesive America, where no American has to live in anxiety, discomfort or fear of another American.  By learning to respect the “otherness” of others and accepting the God-given uniqueness of each one of us, we pave the way to mitigate conflicts and nurture goodwill. Then we all can live our lives and not worry about other’s religion, race, sexual orientation or ethnicity. We are all Americans.

Pluralism News, Saturday, February 25, 2017

Pluralism News is weekly newsletter about pluralism in religion, politics, culture and society.  Please visit http://centerforpluralism.com/news/

1. President Trump received our letter
2. Conservative and Liberals don’t have to be each other’s throats
3. Is it worth talking with the right wing extremists and radicals?

President Trump received our letter, hope it becomes a part of the State of the Union.

It is our responsibility individually and collectively to stand up for fellow Americans when they feel insecure. If we don’t stand up for others why should anyone stand up for anyone?  Our security (Americans) hinges on the security of every American. It behooves us to work on security of others and ultimately we all would feel secure.   Last week, a Jewish Cemetery was desecrated and over 50 Jewish Community Centers received bomb threats.

The Center for Pluralism wanted to get a message out to the president to speak out against Anti-Semitism and all others ills of the society such as Islamophobia, Xenophobia, and Racism and…..
The letter was carefully crafted to be short and precise to increase the chances of reading it in less than 2 minutes and under 200 words.  The letter was delivered to the President, Vice President, and several members at CPAC meeting and most of them read standing in the hallway including Chairman of the CPAC read it.

God willing we will continue to work and see if the President can incorporate the message of cohesiveness in his state of the Union Address on 2/28.

Conservatives and Liberals at each other’s throats

It’s a shame that both sides one continue to paint each other as enemies; enemies they are not! Each group talks about how bad and divisive the other is, without realizing their equal contribution to the divisiveness.  I am writing a full article on the topic and will be published at the Hill, and will share that link. It is amazing how mean we get just to prove we are right.

Is it worth talking with the right wing extremists and radicals?

Each one of us thinks differently.  We have a choice to ‘stay away from each other’ and let the ill-will, suspicion and doubts simmer to become unmanageable.  I hope if you take the time to ‘study’ the three videos and the notes below, you will change your mind about using the phrases like “right wing” “Red necks” and other epithets.  These are bad choice of words to describe fellow humans who react differently to situations.

Last week, I posted this video from a Fox News debate with Sean Hannity and Brigitte Gabriele on face book in two different places, and got shot down by my friends saying it is a waste of time to deal with the hard wired, without realizing they were as prejudiced as the ones they were accusing of.

The Majoritarian Evil Creeps into Senate, Congress and the Administration

Comments Off on The Majoritarian Evil Creeps into Senate, Congress and the Administration

Ours is a Republic for a purpose and not a mob rule where the majority bullies the minority.  Thank God for the founding fathers for having the vision and foresight to build a durable system.

This form of government has guaranteed her citizens their right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  Our system of checks and balances has given us stability, peace and prosperity for over 240 years. We are the only nation on the earth with such a long history of stable governance, because it derives its powers from the consent of the governed.

We, the people are concerned about such stability under Trump ‘regime’ that feels ‘entitled’ to rule at their whim, rather than follow rule of the law.

The declaration of Independence continues,  “But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. “ Indeed, it is our duty to protect our nation from being taken and we have failed the nation and for that we are going to pay a big price.

When President Obama had the majority in House and the Senate, he signed the Affordable Care Act. There was not a single Republican support for the Act and for that it has gone through the circus for the last 6 years!  Had Obama sought and received Republican support even if it was not needed, then his legacy would have sustained for the common good of Americans.

When President Bush had the majority in House and the Senate, he unilaterally went to war with Iraq and Afghanistan.  There was no significant opposition from the gutless congressmen or the Senators and it that ruined our country and brought death and destruction to the innocent people of Iraq and Afghanistan and a disaster to us, the Americans. Shame on us for our gutlessness, our government was not the government of the people; it was the government of Bush and Cheney and we paid a price.

Now, President Trump is in the same evil spot as the other two, and I am afraid more evil is coming to America.

The Hill reports, “By unanimous consent, the Republicans gathered in the hearing room and agreed to change the committee’s standing rules, which normally require at least one member of each party to be in attendance for committee work to proceed.” This does not bode well, this is evil.

Mitch McConnell is shameless to the bone; he refused to hold the hearings for President Obama’s nominee Judge Merrick Garland for the Supreme Court.  Bad things happen to America not because of evil men, but the silence of good for nothing Republican Senators.

Now, the Chickens have come home to roost. Wait, the evil is compounding here. The Republicans Senators are changing the rules to subvert the process of nominations.  They are digging their own graves for 2018. We need to mark this against all those eager senators who are subverting the process. Each one of them will be held accountable for their actions.

I am an Independent voter, and it saddens me to see the ‘monkey see monkey do’ thing going on with our elected irresponsible officials. We are going to find independents to start representing us against each one of the Senators if their nominee makes a mess out of his or her job. There is no doubt, some of them are good, but I am concerned about the bad apples.

President Trump may get away cancelling the Executive Orders of the previous president, but his turn will come in four years and he will regret it, but it will be too late.  He has got some sadistic advisors who enjoy being a pain to fellow Americans.   What happened to his common sense now?

As Americans, we need to become Guardians of Democracy; we cannot trust some of these men and women. I urge the good ones in the house – both Republicans and Democrats to speak up and not get bullied.

President Obama, in his last speech spoke about the important role of citizens and how all Americans have a responsibility to be the guardians of our democracy–not just during an election but every day.

“As an American citizen who cares deeply about our country, if there are issues that have less to do with the specifics of some legislative proposal or battle, but go to core questions about our values and our ideals, and if I think that it’s necessary or helpful for me to defend those ideals, then I’ll examine it when it comes,” Obama said.

As American Citizens, we need to demand from the Republican Senators not to slam dunk the nominees – let there be a rigorous process.  After all we are selecting the men and women who can mess up America or bring peace and prosperity. It is time we make our government, a government of the people for the people and not the government of Trump and the whimsical conformist mob of Senators and Congressmen.

Martin Luther King’s advice to American Muslims

Comments Off on Martin Luther King’s advice to American Muslims

Are American Muslims the only ones who are apprehensive at this time? The answer is an emphatic no! At this time every one of the 322 Million Americans is concerned about the immediate future of his or her space in America. How do we turn things around? However, the Americans who are most vulnerable at this time are Muslims and I wanted to find answers.

As a passionate practitioner of Pluralism, I was seeking guidance from an individual who is my mentor along with Prophet Muhammad, Jesus Christ, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Pope Francis and my own father. MLK was within my reach; I could stand with him and reflect for answers.

So I walked up to the Tidal basin in Washington DC to meditate in presence of Martin Luther king Jr., the weather was cold, but the presence of MLK was heartwarming! I have been here many times, including October 16, 2011 when the memorial was unveiled by President Obama. Crowds of people were visiting, but I was in my own world seeking guidance.

America would not have been the great nation it has become, had it not been for the efforts of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr., I was admiring them. Today, I can proudly say, America is God’s own country where you can find people of every race, nationality, ethnicity, language, culture and religion. We see God as one, none and many and in every form; male, female, genderless and non-existent, being and non-being, nameless and with innumerable names. America is a representation of all of God’s creation, there is nothing like this.

None of the immigrants would have come to the United States and made this nation great, if they had to sit in the back of the bus, drink water from a different fountain and live a dehumanized humiliated life. Thanks to the majority of the White Americans and MLK for being the catalyst for making America a great nation! I am here today, because of their vision and the civil rights act. Thank you Dr. King. I thank you every year for making America a great nation.

My cell phone Alarm got me out of my meditative trance, and I decided to walk and read the stone carving across me. It read, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

I screamed – Eureka!

DARKNESS CANNOT DRIVE OUT DARKNESS

Everyone turned around and looked at me as if I was nuts. Without batting an eyelid, I pointed towards the engraving, this was the advice MLK gave to deal with intense conflicts, a few simply nodded affirmatively and few walked away. I felt in my guts he was talking to me the American Muslim. I recall my dream from early 2000 when Mahatma Gandhi patted on my back and said, “Son you have work to do.” This was exciting to me and this is my calling. I knew no problem is insurmountable and I wanted to talk to my fellow Americans, particularly Muslims.

We have built this great nation in the last 240 years and if you have the desire to move from darkness into light you can do it. My inner voice said, “Mike, the time is now, go out and make the effort and have patience, as Lord Krishna had advised Arjuna in the Hindu Epic of Mahabharata to do his duty and leave the results to the creator.

Humanity survives on hope.

The voice said, you can contribute to the hopes of American Muslims, and secure their future, thus build a cohesive America where each one of the 322 Million Americans can live with hope and sense of security. The gloom and doom has got to be driven out. Darkness cannot drive darkness out, only the light can do it. The intellect in me argued –Would Muslims listen to you? Then I remembered the story my mother told me, “Once Prophet Muhammad expressed his frustration to God that people were not listening to him, what he should do? God shot back, “Muhammad do your duty and it is up to me to guide people to accept your message or not” Ha! What a relief it was.

So here is my Message to American Muslims

This is the year of great American Integration. Muslims have to be contributors to the goodness of America despite getting the short end of the stick.

Our approach ought to be conflict mitigation and goodwill nurturence and not confrontation; this was Prophet Muhammad’s approach in dealings with conflicts. Confrontation causes both sides to dig in their heels and keep them on pins and needles, where as discussions and dialogue, however frustrating they might be opens up new vistas of cooperation. That is what Pluralism is all about; respecting the otherness of others. There is a whole chapter in Quran on that.

Whether the issue is Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, LGBT, Race or the other, they are American issues that affect us all, and together as Americans, we will find pluralistic solutions to issues of the day that we all can live with. Injustice is the biggest destroyer of tranquil societies.

My safety hinges on the safety of people around me, so it is in my best interests to work for the safety and goodness of fellow Americans.

Many a Muslim ‘leaders’ are conformist chickens and run like hell if anyone makes even the slightest of noise. They are afraid and cannot cope with dissent and disagreement. They just don’t have the courage to take the stand for doing the right thing. Leadership is having the vision to foresee the problems and cobbling reluctant people and opposing views together through agonizing discussions and move towards maintaining the dynamic equilibrium of the societies. It takes guts and we hope to train enough Muslim leaders to take those steps.

Democracy has not seeped into many a Muslim organizations. The controlling men are afraid of discussions and willingly kill good ideas and rot in mediocrity. We need to remember that sustainable decisions are made after due discussions.

Thanks to our Imams, they are a blessing and play a key role in reshaping Muslim relationships with fellow Americans. In the past, we have asked the Imams, and they have come through it, we asked them to pray for the release of Yazidi women, persecuted Christians or harassed Shia, or call on them to urge Muslims to honor our Veterans on the Veterans Day, they have done it all. Fellow Americans need to know this, and we are going to do a lot more now.

Between the Imams, Muslim Scholars and us, we will test each other in stretching beyond our sketchy religious boundaries created in middle ages, but will unequivocally stick together and remain within the Pluralistic traditions of Islam.

We need to reach out and talk with those who are polarized and those who are not friendly. We have had great success with people who were written off by fellow Muslims as right wingers as if we are the bloody wrong wingers. We will continue to work with them and endure the humility if necessary for achieving greater good for them, for us, and for all of us.

It is time for Muslims to take the steps necessary to allay the fears of fellow Americans and undo the tensions, remove the suspicions and restore trust among Americans. This is what a Muslim ought to be; a conflict mitigater and a goodwill nurturer.

What is good for Muslims has got to be good for others and vice-versa for the goodness to be sustainable. There is a shortage of visionaries among Muslim or they have simply given up, if you are the one, time is now to pick up the ball and run.

We are planning to hold two major conferences and a whole bunch of activities listed at the Center for Pluralism and World Muslim Congress for the purpose of rebuilding trust with fellow Americans.

Do American Muslims want Sharia?

We owe it to fellow Americans to clarify the myths about Sharia, and propose fixing this problem through a conference that is being planned with Islamic scholars and those who are opposed to Sharia to make the event credible. Let’s “clear the air” of misunderstandings for all Americans. We need to put this fear behind and move on with our lives.

Does Quran Promote Violence?

This is not only for concerned Americans, but for Muslims as well. It is a book of guidance for the whole of humanity to build orderly societies. The Quran is about building cohesive societies and not exclusive societies. The Quran is not about governing other people but living in harmony with all of God’s creation. In effect Quran tells you to mind your own business and let others mind theirs.

If you are a “doubting Muslim” about Quran, this seminar is for you. Many a Muslims seem to be faith deficient. Shamefully a few Muslim scholars have deliberately misinterpreted 60 verses to make Allah un-friendly towards Jews and Christians. This needs to be fixed. Here is an article at Dallas Morning News.

America is a great nation and we have to do everything to keep it that way by including and assuring fellow Americans who are disaffected that they need not worry; their culture and their way of life will not change due to immigrants or Muslims. We are all better off in making sure America remains America. You are who you are and I am who I am; let’s learn to live with each other by respecting the otherness of others and accepting the God given uniqueness of each one of us. We love this country and we will fight to keep it that way.

My Last Visit to the Obama White House

Comments Off on My Last Visit to the Obama White House

Thursday, January 5, 2016, about 40 Muslims attended the last meeting with the Obama administration folks. It was the last day for the White House staff and the officers from the Public Engagement Office. The transition team joined as well. It was a full two hour meeting called at the last minute.

It was a joy to hear each one of them. Their language and the actions they have taken were all inclusive; they were talking about all Americans. It was sad to see them all go. No one from the Obama team is staying behind of course; that is our tradition. I salute each one of them to be part of this meeting and demonstrate the right path for Muslim integration.

The most important outcomes of the meeting were the pro-active concepts to “get involved” and “build coalitions”. It is similar to wanting to have a chance of winning the jackpot, but first you have to buy the lottery ticket. The crucial call was to stand with each other. Everyone is apprehensive at this moment – so let’s get the hell out of our silos and meet other people! We are all Americans – and if time permits, I will put together a full report on this.

In some ways, I am glad my term with the American Muslim Institution is ending on 1/31/16; for this allows me to resume my lifelong work on Pluralism with full passion.

My goodbye note to the American Muslim Institution: Article: https://theghousediary.com/mission-accomplished-american-muslim/

Welcome to the Center for Pluralism

Please take a look at the effective things we will be doing and have done over the past 20 years. We believe 2017 will be billed as the year of “Great American Integration” and we will be a big part of it. Center for Pluralism is not a Muslim Organization, it is an Organization for all Americans as you read through it, you will find out. If this resonates with you, please consider being a contributor to the Great American Integration movement. The homepage of the website has links to everything we do.

Islam is one of the segments of the Center for Pluralism

We will call on our Imams to promote Sunnah of the Prophet to be the “Amins of America” and to encourage their congregants to do more in caring for neighbor. This is Allah’s guidance and # 1 priority for Muslims today. It is time to review the beautiful Islamic values for creating a better world for the Aalameen – whole humanity.

Our Imams and Scholars are the catalysts for reshaping Muslim relationships with fellow Americans, and guide us forward with the great American national integration, where each one of the 322 Million Americans have the similar interest; harmony, cohesiveness and safety of Americans.

In the past, we have asked the Imams and they have done it, whether we ask them to pray for release of the Yazidi women or persecuted Christians or Shia, or call on them to urge Muslims to honor our Veterans on Veterans day, and join us on commemorating Holocaust and Genocides, they have done it all. The world needs to know this. Between us and the Imams, we will stretch ourselves to our limits, but will unequivocally stick together and remain within the Pluralistic traditions of Islam.

The “American Amin Award”. This recognition is awarded to Muslims who follow the foundational values of Islam: Amin, as Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was called, i.e., an Individual who reaches out to every human regardless of his or her religion, race, region or other uniqueness for the common good of humanity. Alhamdu Lillah, we have recognized the best individual in America to qualify to receive the award. This is a good beginning – the start of a wonderful tradition. Details: http://centerforpluralism.com/awards-the-american-amin-awards/

Birth Celebrations of Prophet Muhammad (Festivals of the World) – 1/21/17 Those Muslims who may have called it a “bidda” in the past will like and appreciate this event. This is not a “run of the mill” program. Unlike the traditional devotional Mawlid, it is a unique intra-faith and interfaith program for it highlights the Peace Maker Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) work that contributes to creating a better world for all of humanity. It is an intra-faith and interfaith program, not a big program but a good start. No doubt, you have not attended anything like this. Details: http://centerforpluralism.com/milad-prophet-muhammads-birth-celebrations/

RELIGIOUS AND CULTURAL MUSLIMS WILL BE AFFECTED Whether we are religious Muslims or cultural Muslims, none of us, nor will our children be spared should the Muslim registration process begin. Even if our children change their names, they are still children of cultural or religious Muslims required to be registered and watched. It may even affect their future employment as well.

We can do nothing and live like 2nd class citizens or we can take bold steps to change the equation! We should have the courage to do the right thing – i.e. to get involved in building coalitions with our fellow Americans… not to be against anyone but for the good of everyone! At the “Center for Pluralism”, we are organizing events to facilitate such coalition building and invite you to attend the following events:

Reflections on Holocaust and Genocides – Sunday, January 29, 2017. We have to acknowledge, learn and reflect upon the terrible things we have inflicted upon each other; then, commit ourselves to resist the temptation to be prejudiced and stop stereotyping others. The truth is that we cannot demand peace unless we are peaceful ourselves. Information at www.HolocaustandGenocides.com VIDEO:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uneRYgYfgWI

Essence of Christianity – Tuesday, January 31, 2017 Learn the wisdom of each one of the 13 religions in 13 workshops in 13 months. Knowledge leads to understanding and understanding to acceptance of the otherness of others. This is a monthly series of workshops. – 13 religions, 13 months and 13 workshops – http://centerforpluralism.com/workshops/

DO YOU QUALIFY TO BE A PLURALIST?

If these videos resonate with you, you belong to “The Center for Pluralism”. Our focus is going mainstream. We are all in this together and we will boldly change the narrative together.

Do American Muslims want Sharia? We owe it to fellow Americans to clarify the myths about Sharia, and propose fixing this problem through a conference that is being planned with Islamic scholars and also with attackers of Sharia to make the event more credible. Let’s “clear the air” of misunderstandings for all Americans.

Does Quran Promote Violence?

If you are a “doubting Tom” about Quran, this seminar is for you. Also, many Muslims seem to be faith deficient; Quran does not promote violence. It is a book of guidance for the whole of humanity to build orderly societies. Shamefully, a few Muslims have deliberately misinterpreted 60 verses to make Allah un-friendly towards Jews and Christians. Once I challenged a major pastor in Dallas that if he finds three faults with the Quran in a public discussion, I will join his ministry. – He backed off!

A few “credible” Muslims actually chewed me out. They asked, “What if he finds three faults?” That was the faith they have in the Quran, and there are many more like them. It is time to get rid of this way of thinking. The Quran is about building cohesive societies and not exclusive societies. The Quran is not about governing other people but living in harmony with all of God’s creation. More at www.Quraanconference.com which is an important Program coming soon to Washington DC. http://www.dallasnews.com/news/news/2010/09/19/In-defense-of-Islam-pursuing-9397

Media Conference

Muslims love to blame the media because that is the easiest thing to do. Though it is difficult, the right thing to do is to engage with them.
