Standing up for Hindus

Comments Off on Standing up for Hindus

The purpose of writing this piece is to inspire each one of you to do things for others –  If you are not willing to stand up for others, why should anyone stand up for you?

In the following compilation, I will highlight some of the work I have done with and for Hindus and Hinduism. This excludes the work for my motherland India. However, there is a lot of work prior t0 2003 that I need to collect and put it together.

I am blessed to connect with Atheists to Zoroastrians and every one in between including Native Americans.

As an Indian it was embarrassing for me that most of the Indians have no clue about each other – a few Hindus know about Muslims, some of them don’t even know about Jainism or Buddhism let alone Sikhism.  Same goes with Muslim and others. We live and work together, and yet we don’t know about the other.
What do we know?  The cooked versions and bad things about others, shame on us.

So, I ventured out into public in 1993 to teach and to facilitate knowledge about each other.  The Asian News Magazine offered glimpses of each religion and every week, we wrote about the essence of every festival. Then we continued the same on Asian News Radio from 1996-2001.

Since this chapter about Hindus, I will focus on Hinduism, as brief as I can.

Shri DD Maini wrote articles on Hinduism and his visits to every place of worship in India, and our Dallas Hindu Scholar Dr. Hasmukh Shah wrote about Hinduism besides others and our first Radio show on Religion started with Dr. Hasmukh Shaw’s interview about Hinduism.  Then I did 100 hours of talk show Radio on Hinduism over a period of two years (and of course others) with Swami Nityananda Prabhu of Hare Krishna Temple, we learned the whole Bhagvad Gita and amazing principles of life.

We did two workshops on Hinduism as a part of learning about each other.

When I was called in by different Radio stations on Christmas day or other days to talk about Religion, I always talked about Hinduism (and others). I visited the Maya Temples in Mexico, there I prayed the Hindu (and other) prayers in the underground wells, and on the temple grounds.  All of this is available on my different sites and blogs.
Check out Dallas Morning News’s Texas Faith column – of the 80+ articles I have written, 70 of them carry a note about Hinduism. You can visit www.TheGhousediary.com and plug Texas Faith in the search box, and you can see most of the articles. For 2010 and before it is on blogs of Islam and Pluralism.
For the first time in Dallas, I was able to bring all the Hindu Temple management teams together at the Program Shanti Shanti at Richardson Civic Center.  Mihir Meghani, President of HAF was introduced to Dallas for the first time.

The second time (and a few times after that) was the first Unity Day event in 2005 pictures at  www.UnitydayUSA.com

As an individual it is my duty to share whatever little good I can and counter the bad with good.

We have various religious leaders visiting from overseas, particularly Hindu and Muslims, most of them preach goodness of their religion and a handful of them preach hate from the temples and the Mosques.  They come here to tell Hindus or Muslim to hate each other, their talk is loaded with hate in the place of worship and I always wonder how my Hindu and Muslim friends can listen to that. At least in Dallas,  the Muslim Imams give sermons about co-existence , however once in a blue moon some one comes along and speaks ill of others, both in Hindu and Muslim communities.

If you are not comfortable in telling them that they are wrong, let me know, I will do that.  I will not even spare the big mega church Pastor Jeffress who called Hinduism a cult.
I value free speech and the only way to combat evil is with goodness and love.
As I make the time, I will update this, there is a lot of work done prior to 2003, from when I kept records of my work inDallasIndians@yahoogroups.com and the blogshttp://MikeGhouseforIndia.blogspot.com and two sites world Muslim Congress and Foundation for pluralism.  There is a whole big story prior to 2003 that I need to put together…
Again, the purpose of compiling this piece is to inspire each one of you to do things for others. If you are not willing to stand up for others, why should anyone stand up for you?

Senator Williams’ Remarks Offended Hindus
Governor of Kentucky attended a factory opening ceremony that created 275 jobs for Americans. Senator Williams  criticized the Governor for sitting cross-legged with a “dot on his forehead,” and described the ceremony as “polytheistic.” It is not only a Hindu issue, it is indeed an American issue and so I spoke up and wrote a piece and hope to meet him and share the wisdom of Hinduism.

Bigtory against Hinduism in RussiaBigotry exists not because of bigots, but because we have not spoken out against it. The Arcbishop of Siberia attacks the Bhagavad Gita, the holy book of Hinduism. I just could not sit and let the ignorance become the currency. So I wrote and asked Muslim, Christians, Jews, Sikhs and others to call the Russian Embassy in Washington DC and thanks to all those who made the call. This is how we build cohesive societies.

Surya Namaskar and Muslim responseThe Surya Namaskar is a Hindu religious tradition, a beautiful act of bowing to the Sun and welcoming the first rays of dawn as an expression of gratitude to the energy it breathes in to life and everything about life. I was urging the Muslims to participate in the event in their own way.

Doniger’s book on Hindu history – Factual errorsThe book: Hindus, an alternate history is out now. Wendy Donigers writes on Indian History laden with errors. It is our responsibility to hightlight the errors, and as civil socieites we cannot perpetuate the errors and pass on to the next generation as facts. Let the reader “beware clause” be added to the book that the facts are not verified.

Happy Ganesh ChaturthiAmong Hindus there is beautiful tradition of invoking that aspect of God which removes barriers and paves the way for a smoother life. The icon that represents this aspect of God is known as Ganesh, Ganesha, or Vinayak depending on the region, most Hindus around the world invoke Ganesh before they start any thing in life from starting their day, to opening a new business or wearing new clothes or starting a social ceremony.

Should Christians practice YogaIn my weekly Dallas Morning News, I wrote about anti-yoga talks. Mohler seems to be threatened by the popularity of yoga, a beautiful practice to bring composure to oneself. He is obsessed with the idea that yoga is a bait to lure his congregation away into “a spiritual practice that threatens to transform their own spiritual lives into a `post-Christian, spiritually polyglot’ reality”, and then he asks, “Should any Christian willingly risk that?” How mistaken can one be?

Essence of DiwaliDiwali is the Indian festival of lights and light symbolizes hope and positive energy, it indicates the victory of good over evil; a new beginning; seeing the light at the end of tunnel and light is also a symbol of knowledge as it is an internationally used.

Dallas Religious Leaders, Swami Nityananda PrabhuThe open mindedness of Swami Nityananda Prabhu of Hare Krishna Hindu Temple; a panelist on this forum is admirable. Where ever I run, people love to talk about his teachings from Bhagvad Gita on my Radio Show, called Wisdom of Religion.  He has indeed opened up minds of non-Hindus to see the wisdom of Hinduism.
Essences of Janmashtami Celebration of Sri Krishna’s birthday, the man who gave us so much wisdom in Bhagvad Gita. The book is an encapsulation of his advise to Arjuna when he goes through different phases of thoughts and actions. …It is one of the best self analysis books to read.
Roberts Jeffress and his bigotryI am surprised that the Israel Lobby has spared this man. He has not spared Mormons, Muslims, Catholics, Jews, Buddhists and Hindus in his rants.

Hinduism 101 Workshop – Dallas Morning News
The Foundation for Pluralism, a Dallas-based interfaith organization, will host the workshop at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 14315 Midway Road in Addison. Organizer Mike Ghouse, who founded the group and is the event’s moderator, said this workshop will cover the origins of Hinduism, the concept of rebirth, India’s caste system and more.
Happy Ramnvami – Birth Celebrations of Lord RamaIt is a Hindu festival, celebrating the birth of Lord Rama to King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya of Ayodhya. Ram is the 7th incarnation of the Dashavatara of Vishnu.SreeRama Navami festival falls on the ninth day of the month of Chaitra in the Hindu calendar. and marks the end of the nine-day Chaitra-Navratri celebrations. I will be happy to do a presentation on the event. I enjoy listening to the stories about Rama, an exemplary person to model life after.

Hanuman Jayanthi
Hanuman plays a critical role in the Indian epic Ramayana. It is the story of King Rama who was banished to the forest for fourteen years. While in exile, he remains defacto king, as his younger brother Bharata who was the king, submits to the will of Rama, his elder step brother.

Let’s leave Ram Sethu Alone
On the faith side, Ram Sethu is a bridge built by Hanuman and his friends; this was the bridge that Rama crossed over to go to Sri Lanka. It is not only an Indian heritage; it is a world heritage site. We may need to explore this and learn about the science and art of bridge making during the times of Rama. How did they fill the dirt in the ocean, what materials did they use? Will it bring an understanding of Ramayana?http://mikeghouseforindia.blogspot.com/2007/09/lets-leave-ram-sethu-alone.html
Rama – A Muslim Perspective
As beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, faith is in the heart of the believer.
There is a consistent theme in Qur’aan of looking the world from a pluralistic point of view. Qur’aan, Al-Hujurat, Sura 49:13 ” O mankind, we have created you male and female, and have made you nations and tribes that ye may know one another. The noblest of you, in sight of Allah, is the best in conduct. Allah know and is aware of everything.”http://mikeghouseforindia.blogspot.com/2007/09/rama-muslim-perspective.html
Harassment of Hindus in Kazkhastan

Who should we write to? Who should we call? Is this a religious harassment? Please send us the details.

Hinduism and American PluralismWhat role does Hinduism play in the emerging pluralistic society? The author Jakob De Roover explores it well in the following article (after my comments)
Hindu Muslim DialogueAn innovative approach to Hindu-Muslim dialogue. This reminds me of my College Professor Ramachandran and my weaver friend Fakhru Bhai; a Hindu and a Muslim respectively and I used to discuss and understand the wisdom of each aspect of religion.http://mikeghouseforindia.blogspot.com/2008/05/hindu-muslim-dialogue.html
Supreme Court Brief Filed on Behalf of Hindu Americans
In behalf of the Foundation for Pluralism and World Muslim Congress, I support the case filed by the Hindu American Foundation and hope the Supreme Court decides in favor of opening the hearts and minds of all people to include every faith and tradition in public square.
Ayodyha – proud of my India
The court has finally made the decision and so far peace has prevailed.  I was not able to sleep last night late until 3:00 AM and thank God, goodness has yet prevailed. If people don’t agree, let it go to Supreme court, we have to prove to the world that we are a nation that respects rule of Law. Let other nations in the world look up to our model and never, every dream of becoming like the very ones we denigrate.

Am I a Hindu?
This is one of the most read articles among my Muslim and Christian friends. I came across this excellent piece “Am I a Hindu” explaining religion in its simplest terms. I recommend every one to take a few minutes to read through this. It is the simplicity of talking with a young girl that makes this article beautiful. I have added a few comments and additional information below the article.

Muslims condemn temple desecration

Muslims condemn demolition of Hindu Temple
Dallas, Texas – The World Muslim Congress condemns the demolition of Hindu Temple in Lahore and urges the Government of Pakistan to restore the temple. Muslims follow Islam, a monotheistic religion but not a monolithic religion. Muslims who have deeply imbibed the teaching of Islam condemn the act of demolition of the temple in Pakistan.

Muslims condemn intolerance in Malaysia
The act of carrying a head of a bull is un-acceptable and we urge the Malaysian Government to punish these loonies as criminals bent on disturbing peace of the state. They should not be cited as Muslims and their religion does not permit them to do that, they are criminals and must be cited as such.

Protecting Pakistani Hindus
Let every Pakistani speak up and be a defender of other Pakistani, be it a Hindu, Ahmadiyya, Christian, Jew, Zoroastrian, Shia, Bohra, Ismaili or a Sunni. We need more voices to make this work. May God give us the passion to speak out and do the right thing. Amen!

Condemning Ghazni
This issue has been a sore subject with the Indians. Ghazni did destroy the Somnath temple, and it has been believed as destruction of Hindu Places of Worship.
Malaysia – Bangaramma Verdict
The verdict amounts to forcing Ms. Bangarma to believe what she does not believe, that is not Islamic in any sense. The original intention of such ruling was to prevent treason against the state for switching loyalties to harm the state, sort of double agent. Bangarma is no harm to the state, her belief in Hinduism must be honored.http://worldmuslimcongress.blogspot.com/2010/08/malaysia-banggarma-verdict-religiously.html

A dark Easter for Palestinian Christians

Comments Off on A dark Easter for Palestinian Christians

There is so much to
know and so much to attend.  However, we
tend to attend to issues that are shared by friends. The following two pieces
have compelled me to respond.
As humans, we are instinctively
inclined to take sides and give strength to one of the two positions in a given
situation. We do that because standing for a friend, a fellow you know, even
the family members sounds like the right thing to do.
It is not.
The right thing to do
is to find lasting solutions and not emotional solutions for the moment.
That is what the
United States and Arab Nations have done in messing up the security for Israel
and justice for the Palestinians. Both of us have recklessly and
unconditionally supported the conflict and positions of each side, rather than focusing
on getting the parties to sit down and find lasting solutions. They would have
done it, had we, the Americans and the Arabs not beefed up their positions.
In the two notes
below, I see the same pattern and I chose to remain not taking sides. As  a peace maker that would be wronging the
Israelis and the Palestinian Christians.
Until the myths (to
the other) and facts (to the other) are cleared up, where both sides agree to
the “agreed facts” Ill-will continues.  We cannot deny the issues, and neither should
be brush them aside – they will be nagging eternally.

This is where you and I can serve as guidance to create a balance in a society
based on agreed facts by all sides, and the American Administration should stay
out of it, peace comes from understanding and not influencing, enforcing, bribing
or appeasing. No nation or individual will live in comfort, when injustice
remains in currency.

It is in Israel’s
interest to have a public forum with open invitations to discuss this including
the writer of the article below. They must avoid temptations to bring “their”
folks to the conversation, bring the ones who see the issues. Truth is the only
thing that triumphs; it will restore the trust in the society and removes on
more battle off the field.

From a friend:
False information
that drives wedges between people should be exposed. I hope you pass the word
along. Hope this finds you and your family well. We are blessed by a 3 week
visit from our son from Tel Aviv.
Earlier last week the article below appeared in the Washington
Post. It claims that Israel unduly restricts Christian travel to Jerusalem.
Ambassador Oren has written a passionate response (also below) in which he
declares that this is nothing short of libel against the Jewish State. I
believe Amb Oren’s response includes information worth knowing. Although the
Washington Post is not widely read in Dallas, this still may be a topic of
conversation among our friends in the Christian community.
A dark Easter for Palestinian Christians

By Richard Stearns| Religion News Service, Published: April 4

Each year during Holy week, Christians around the world anticipate
what come call the “Old Faithful” of miracles.
At the Church of the Holy Sepulchre — built over the traditional
site that encompasses Jesus’ tomb and the place of his crucifixion — the
archbishop enters the tomb after being inspected by Jewish authorities to
ensure he has no means of lighting a fire. After saying prayers and worshiping
the risen Christ, the candles miraculously alight.
The ceremony has been performed for centuries; records of the
event reach back to the ninth century. Across more than a millennium of Muslim,
European, or Jewish rule, the purported miracle has been an inspiration to
thousands of pilgrims who flock to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to spread
the fire into the rest of Jerusalem.
Once it is brought out of the tomb, the light is spread from
person to person, candle by candle, and out into the world. It is a beautiful
sight as worshipers from different Christian traditions line the darkened
streets holding candles and spreading the light of Jesus Christ. The ceremony
reflects the peaceful spread of Jesus’ message from one person to another.
Called “Holy Fire Saturday,” this event also prefigures the Easter celebration
the following day in which Christians celebrate Jesus’ triumph over death
itself.
While Christians mark Christmas as the “silent night” in which God
himself took on human flesh, on Easter we proclaim, “Christ the Lord is risen
today,” in the words of the old hymn. It’s a miracle not of light, but of life
defeating death.
But for the past several years in Jerusalem, the mood on Holy
Saturday and the rest of Holy Week has not been one of rejoicing and triumph
but instead one of trial and tribulation.
Because of travel restrictions in past years, the vast majority of
Christians living in the West Bank have been stopped at checkpoints and
prevented from attending one of the most important religious services of the
year. Israeli authorities require permits for entering Jerusalem. Local
Christians estimate that only 2,000 — 3,000 permits are provided, despite the
overwhelming desire among the 50,000 Palestinian Christians to travel from the
West Bank and Gaza for the Easter week celebrations in Jerusalem.
Those who make it across checkpoints and into Israel are still
barricaded by numerous walls and other security obstructions. As a result, even
many who have permits are unable to make it to the Church of the Holy
Sepulchre. In 2010, a Palestinian colleague of mine at World Vision, who had
warm memories as a child of the Holy Fire service, was able to return to the
Holy Sepulchre. She described the scene for those able to gain entrance to the
church: “The crowd, striving to stay joyful, could still feel the change of
what Easter had now become and the dark cloud of checkpoints, police forces,
and denial of entry that had obscured the joy of this holiday.”
While the ancient Christian communities around Jerusalem await the
miracle of the Holy Fire this week, I pray for another miracle — one that would
give full religious freedom to the Christians in the West Bank and Gaza. Holy
Week has long been a time of pilgrimage to Jerusalem; Christians have worshiped
there since the birth of the church, and these sites are a core aspect of the
devotion of Palestinian believers.
The restrictions on travel for worship are not only in force
during Holy Week, but also for routine Sunday services, weddings, funerals, and
baptisms throughout the year. Certainly, Israel can take care of its own
security concerns while accommodating peaceful Palestinian Christian worship.
In a recent letter by 80 Palestinian Christian leaders, including
the Greek Orthodox archbishop of Jerusalem, Palestinian Christians spoke out
against the lack of religious freedom inside Israel, the West Bank and Gaza.
They complained of being forced to endure an “assault on our natural and basic
right to worship.”
Along with the rest of the world’s Christians, I celebrate a God
who brings light from darkness and life from death. And I pray for another
miracle this Holy Fire Saturday, one that would remove all restrictions on the
freedom to worship for the Christians of the Holy Land.
(Richard Stearns is the U.S. president of World Vision, a global
Christian humanitarian agency.)
A response from Ambassador Michael Oren
By Michael Oren| Religion News Service, Published: April 5

Following is a statement from Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren in
response to a guest commentary by Richard Stearns, the U.S. president of the
Christian humanitarian group World Vision, that appeared in Religion News
Service on Wednesday (April 4):
“The claims made in a recent article by Richard Stearns (”A dark
Easter for Palestinian Christians”) are completely without foundation and are
libelous to the State of Israel.
“Israel has provided more than 20,000 permits this year for
Palestinian Christians to enter Jerusalem for the Good Friday and Easter
holidays. Five-hundred similar permits have also been issued to the remaining
Christians of Gaza, though the area is under the control of the terrorist
organization Hamas.
“With the exception of the very few individuals who have raised
security concerns, and not withstanding the measures we must take to protect
our citizens, any Christian from the West Bank can reach Jerusalem on Good
Friday and Easter. All allegations to the contrary are flagrantly untrue and
represent a reckless attempt to defame the Jewish State.
“Israel, the only Middle Eastern country with a growing and
thriving Christian population, remains committed to maintaining its superb
relations with Christian communities worldwide. Though we face serious and
continuing defense challenges, we uphold the principle of free access to the
Holy Places to all religions. On this year, as in all previous years, we wish
Christians throughout the world a joyous
holiday.”

Hate in America towards Bollywood Actor SRK by Indians

Comments Off on Hate in America towards Bollywood Actor SRK by Indians

Narain Kataria and fellow Indians;

This note is not about SRK; it is about the hate expressed
towards fellow Indians in two of the notes in the link given below.
Briefly, Sharukh Khan, as he is called SRK and the King of
Bollywood, is an Indian Actor who was detained in the New York Immigration for
90 Minutes, because of his Muslim name and it was the 2nd time
it has happened.

He was here to address the students at Yale University. Googling his name will
produce thousands of entries on this event. However, he had a great attitude,
he said, whenever my ego gets bloated, I go to America, they bring me down. I
am glad the Foreign Minister of India and the Embassy of India have taken this
up with the State Department.

As Americans, we should not allow any bigotry in our land, he should be treated
with respect, as he represents Billions of Indians. He can gather a Million
Indians in a hurry than any other Indian.  This incident has made a
“few” among the right-wing Indians happy and the notes below are
indicative of it.

SRK is more Indian than Narain, me or anyone
else, and he lives, serves and entertains Indians.  Narain is denigrating
a fellow Indian, and being disrespectful towards millions if not billions of
Indians who adore him.
I ask him, “Have you ever considered your statements to be
hateful? Wouldn’t it be dead wrong to say that Hinduism teaches one to be
hateful?  Show your note to any average moderate Indian or American; they
see the venom in it.  This is not the Hindu thing, or Indian thing, this
is you the individual.”
“You don’t need to be seething, just think about what you are
doing. Is this the right thing to do?”
I am sure that the 120 subscribers on this e-list are not extremists, a handful
may be, but the majority is not, they are good people who mind their own
business.  No one should judge a group by individuals, that amounts to
stereotyping and that is most dangerous thing one can do to a nation or a
people.
We have to build a cohesive India, where we defend the rights of
every Indian.  Mr. Narain Kataria, I hope you start seeing an Indian as an
Indian, the bias stems from your mind, it is not a part of the majority of
Indians.

The average Indian living in India would be appalled to read
your statements.
Mr. Kataria,  you are propagating hate against fellow
Indians….and probably increase their blood pressure and make them sick of
your rhetoric. Is this the right thing to do?
Until the myths or facts (to the other) are cleared up, where
both sides agree to the “agreed facts” ill-will continues. I don’t
know if you have a gain in this, leadership or financial, that is your
business.
You and I have an opportunity to serve as guidance to create a
balance in a society based on agreed facts by all sides. No nation or
individual will live in comfort, when falsities circulate.
You had held a conference, about Islam and you did not invite Muslims
to the event. Was that to mis-educate the Hindus?  A true conference will
have all points of view. Isn’t this American way?
Make a list of all the things you believe, and let’s hold a
conference to put all the fabrications aside and honor India and the Indians
for being truthful. Truth is the only thing that triumphs; it will restore the
trust in the society. Let’s learn to live our religions, whatever they might
be.
We need to work to mitigate the ill will, would you join me in
doing so?
Thank you Narain
Mike

Prefer Pakistani to Indian Food?

Comments Off on Prefer Pakistani to Indian Food?

http://nabsites.net/demo/prefer-pakistani-to-indian-food/

My Indian friend Ram
Narayan writes,

” THE ATLANTIC
MAGAZINE of May 2012 has an article titled, “Six Rules for Dining
Out” by Tyler Cowen, Economics professor at George Mason University, which
carries the following totally biased and erroneous view titled, “Prefer
Pakistani to Indian (Food).”
Here is my pluralistic
perspective – I have a deep affinity for Idli Sambar- Uddin Vada. Even though I
enjoy Steak and a whole lot of other foods like Chinese, Thai, Mexican, Korean,
German, American and Desi foods, the Idli Sambar- Uddin Vada made by people
from Bangalore is distinct and the aroma of it drives me crazy. I will fall for
it any time.

IDLI- SAMBAR by a Bangalorean is certainly not any different or better than the
one made by a Chennailian, Mumbaiker, Hyderabadich or Trivandarumull, but my
taste bud is conditioned to Bangalore food, it is home to me when I eat that
food.

I am sure you can relate
with me on this, when I was in High School, my mother packed the food in the Tiffin
carrier – and my friends jumped on the food, they liked it so much. So, I
thought there is no comparison to my Mother’s food, she knew it like no one
else. Then as I started eating at my friends homes, darn it, their mothers also
cooked great food.

Finally, I worked at Food Craft Institute in Bangalore (1974-77) where we
trained Chefs, Receptionist, Bakers, Canners and Housekeepers for the
burgeoning five star hospitality industries.
There we were served delicious lunches – 250 different food items per
year from Philippines to South America, from America to Japan and every major cuisine
that you can imagine.

I must give credit to
Yasmeen, my wife. She does the fish, kacche gosht ki Biryani, baigan ka bhurta,
Chicken Korma… yes, I crave for her food. I found my food-home in her food. She is amazing, but very calorie and cholesterol conscious,  you can see me from two years ago, I have lost 20+ pounds. Thanks to her, I can climb the office stairs with ease without panting. Indeed, when I am on phone with her, I go up and down and down and up, she has got me trained.

On our wedding Anniversary she took
me to an Indian Restaurant in Louisville, man, the Chef was from Bangalore, and
the Idli Sambar was perfect. Yasmeen was watching me devour the Idli Sambar.

So my palette was
conditioned to be pluralistic –i.e.,  respecting every which food and accepting the
uniqueness of each one of the food.  Thank God, I have enjoyed just about every food out there. God has been good to me, magar, phir bhi dil hai Hindustani,  the
Idli-Vada beats it all. Thanks to my friends Lata and Sante, who fixed the Idli-Sambar
and without any embarrassment, I ate 6 Idlis.

Have you ever gone with a
friend and ordered the steak? You may have the best medium rare while the other
had well done – you said to yourselves Ayyo,  how do they eat that! Without thinking what the
person would say about your bloody steak.

This Sunday, my friend Vatsa has invited me to a special TV Chef Show from
Bangalore called Bombat Bhojana and I am looking forward to it.

Each palette longs for certain
food, and believe you me, no food is superior or inferior. When my Pakistani
friend and I go for lunch, it is a push and pull. I do enjoy the Pakistani
food, which is not that different than Indian food, but it has lesser appeal to
my buds, as the Indian version of the same food has lesser appeal to him. So,
we take turns. Neither food can be classified as good or bad, it is what your
conditioning is that makes you enjoy the food.  Who would have thought we would enjoy hot dogs in India, but we do now, especially the ones made in Chicago and New York Street corners. Oon oon ooonh!

Pluralism in Cuisine
Mike Ghouse

Prefer Pakistani to Indian.

On average, Pakistani food in the United States is better than Indian food in
the United States, and yet a lot of the core dishes do not greatly differ.
Northwestern-Indian cuisine is predominant in the U.S., so you find substantial
overlap on most Indian and Pakistani menus.

So why does the Pakistani
food turn out better? I think it has to do with cultural associations. When
Americans hear Pakistan, many of them think of bin Laden, drone attacks,
terrorism, Daniel Pearl, and the sale of nuclear secrets. When Americans hear
India, they likely think of Gandhi, or brightly colored Bollywood movies with
lots of happy dancing. Whether or not these portraits are fair or
representative doesn’t matter. Common images of Pakistan nudge away uncommitted
customers. Many Pakistani restaurants also serve no alcohol, limiting their
American audience and making them turn more to Pakistani customers. That’s
another plus.
So you should go more to
Pakistani restaurants than to Indian restaurants. Often, as you search out a
good meal, the quality of the customers matters more than the quality of the
chef. I doubt that Indian chefs are less talented than their Pakistani
counterparts, but they are typically more constrained in what they can produce.
The blandness of Indian restaurants, like that of Thai restaurants, is a direct
result of their ability to market the food to a mass audience.
These are just a few rules,
and of course they aren’t comprehensive, but they illustrate a way of thinking.
Food is a product of supply and demand. Whenever you’re searching for
restaurants, try to figure out where the supplies are fresh, the suppliers are
creative, and the demanders are informed. That’s the precept underlying all
these rules. Follow it, and I guarantee you’ll find better food and better
value when you eat out.

Everyday Foodies, out this month.

Mike Ghouse Speaks at the Dallas Parks Rotary Club

PRESS RELEASE

Paul Wilson President, Sadie

Mike Ghouse Speaks about Building a Cohesive America at the Dallas Parks Rotary Club
Dallas
– Dallas Parks Rotary Club members were intrigued by hearing Mike Ghouse deliver their
message at Monica’s Aca y Alla in downtown Dallas last evening.  The small crowd was enthusiastic about what
Mr. Ghouse had to say and stayed after the meeting asking questions.
President
Wilson’s thoughts went off to the ‘60s when he served as a police officer.  He commented that he thought we had made a
lot of progress from the harsh treatment of blacks and gays back then.  Mr. Wilson is happy to see that change but
says we have a way to go toward equal treatment.
The Dallas Parks Rotary Club, formerly Fair
Park Rotary Club, is one of the oldest clubs in Dallas and was chartered in
1950.  Doug Rudman states “a highly
successful and dedicated group. It strives to contribute both funds and
manpower to all avenues of service”.
Mike’s
passion for teaching everyone about respecting the otherness of the other, and
accepting the God given uniqueness of each one of the 312 million of us is
reflected in the 501(c)(3) he has founded, America Together Foundation.
His
reason for creating America Together Foundation meets the Rotary’s Four-Way
test: 1. Is it the TRUTH?, 2. Is it FAIR
to all concerned?, 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?, and 4.
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?.
Mr.
Ghouse’s message about the need for building a cohesive America also fits
perfectly into the Rotary International theme for 2011-2012,
“Reach Within to Embrace Humanity.”  Embracing
diversity where no American has to live in discomfort, anxiety or fear of the
other is the foundation of building a cohesive America.
Rotary
is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide that
provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all
vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world begun in1905.
Mr.
Ghouse concluded, “I have a dream, a dream to see a cohesive America where we
focus on safety and prosperity of every American.  Indeed, prosperity is pluralistic in nature;
you cannot have it, unless others around you have it.  You cannot be safe unless others around you
are safe.  As an Indian – Muslim – Indian American, I am committed to
contribute towards the safety and prosperity of America.”

INTERFAITH WEDDINGS

      Comments Off on INTERFAITH WEDDINGS

One must admire the couples that marry outside their tradition,
ethnicity, faith, and race. Indeed, they are doing what the spiritual masters
had done for thousands of years; to fall the barriers between people, and
learn to respect the otherness of other and accept the God given uniqueness of
each other.
I have seen disappointments, where couples from different
faiths wishing to marry were not able to do that.  Either the parents or the guardians of the
religions were not comfortable with the situation and did not want to be a part
of it, which we must respect.  All that
the couples wanted was a touch of their own tradition and I feel their anguish and
a sense of in-completion in their marriage when the tradition is not followed.  I recall a situation where a Jewish mother
disowned her daughter for marrying an “infidel” Baha’i, it happens with every religion including Atheists.
By the way, these issues are prevalent chiefly among
immigrant families; however, it is not an issue with the 2nd and 3rd
generation down the line.

Recently I officiated a Jain-Muslim wedding, and it was a pure delight to see the parents on both sides focused on giving their kids a sense of fulfillment that I really had to give
them a hug. After the ceremony the parents were literally crying with joy, it
was a beautiful moment for me to witness their heartfelt joy. I was literally taken back with the admiring looks they bestowed on me.

Here is one of the many paragraphs of the sermon. The others paragraphs dealt
with specifics of each faith and their commonality of values.

The Dharmic (Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism) religions
point out that it is your Karma that determines your life path in terms of
continuation of the journey after the body form collapses, into possibly a new form. The same thought is echoed in the Abrahamic (Judaism,
Christianity and Islam) traditions in a different format; a life after the death –
both sides prop up the idea that there is an eternal heaven, Mukti, Moksha,
Nijaat or salvation from the cycles of suffering.  The interfaith (Sikh and Baha’i) religions,
the independent (Zoroastrian) religion and the native traditions as well have a
similar take.  It is all there, it is our
arrogance that prevents us from seeing the good in others.

I just could not believe the request to officiate the weddings since then. I am
happy for them that they saw the essence of each beautiful religion as I shared
with them.    A
Hindu-Jain, A Muslim-Catholic, and a full Muslim wedding are in the making. And
today, I had a call to do, a Hindu/Agnostic wedding.  God willing, it will be a delight to be a part
of happiness of others.

I am writing an article on the topic and will be including
part of the sermon I gave after the main ceremony – I will be happy to share it, if you are serious and have a need for it. Please  send an email to SpeakerMikeGhouse@gmail.com
. It will not be on my blog.

Mike Ghouse to speak at Rotary Club of Dallas Parks

Comments Off on Mike Ghouse to speak at Rotary Club of Dallas Parks

NEWS  RELEASE
Mike Ghouse is
scheduled to speak to us this Thursday evening about “Building a Cohesive
America.” This should be an interesting presentation about building civil
and civic tolerances in American society between many religious views. Bring
someone with you to Rotary if it is possible. Attached RotaNews.
Dallas Parks Rotary meets  on Thursdays at 6:00 p.m.
APRIL 12, 2012
MONICA’S ACA Y ALLA RESTAURANT,
2914 Main Street (Deep Ellum), in Dallas.
Mike Ghouse will speak to us this evening about building a
cohesive America, where no American has to live in anxiety, apprehension or
fear of the other. This topic has to do with the many religions and religious
viewpoints we have in America and the necessity at the civic level to at the
very least tolerate each other’s viewpoints.
Mike Ghouse is a speaker, thinker, writer, initiator, organizer
and mediator committed to building cohesive societies, offering pluralistic
solutions to the media and the public on current issues. He is available to
speak at places of worship, workplaces, schools, seminars, workshops,
conferences and public events.

Mike is a frequent guest on Fox News, “The Hannity Show”, and on nationally
syndicated shows including Dallas TV, print and radio networks, and occasional
interviews on NPR. Concerned by the political, civil and economic divisiveness,
Mike has initiated and formed the America Together Foundation (ATF), a
non-profit entity committed to building a cohesive America, where no American
has to live with anxiety, apprehension, discomfort or fear of the other. The
focus of the foundation is that one must be free to live his or her life to the
fullest in pursuit of happiness. The ATF is in the developmental stage now and
invites participants, sponsors and volunteers.

Texas Faith :: The intellect and religious faith

Comments Off on Texas Faith :: The intellect and religious faith

“Popular Christianity often seems to denigrate rather than celebrate intellectual life and critical inquiry. This not only ignores Christian giants of philosophy and science but also plays into some of the very worst stereotypes inflicted upon religious believers.”
At the end, after quoting with admiration evangelical scholar Mark Noll, Dionne concludes: “ If Easter is about liberation, this liberation must include intellectual freedom.”
Perhaps you agree with these assessments, or perhaps you don’t. Either way I would like to hear your thoughts about the role the mind plays in opening one up to a religious faith and then sustaining it over time. Twelve Texas Faith panelists weigh in on the question.
MIKE GHOUSE, President, Foundation for Pluralism, Dallas

On Sunday I was discussing about the intellectual freedom in Islam. It appears that we can create a generic formula and lay it over all the religions.

The formula would be a proportional combination of orthodox, moderate and liberal segments in each religion. The orthodoxy wants to hold on to the values they are familiar with, while the liberals don’t see such a need, as those values they hold onto were liberal values once. The battle is really between the liberals and the orthodoxy while the moderates simply watch the show.

I do agree with E.J. Dionne, Jr. about, “diminishing the role of the mind in exploring faith” It is not just Christianity. The trend is in Islam, Judaism and other traditions, where the few, “denigrate rather than celebrate intellectual life and critical inquiry.”

The discussion sprang out of punishment for blasphemy; i.e., if someone mocks and ridicules God and his prophet, he must be killed. An orthodox man quotes the translation of a verse (Q 5:33) from Quran and tells that there is no room for discussion when it comes to God’s words.

The punishment is for naked aggression, and not blasphemy. In the case of blasphemy, the advisement was to turn the other cheek, meaning agree to disagree and walk away (Q 6:68) from the dialogue without aggravating the conflict and compelling each other into taking un-retrievable personal positions. Islam is unambiguously clear; there is no compulsion in faith (Q 2:256).

Our fellow panelist, Pastor George Mason, participated in the Quran conference where we talked about two deliberate mistranslations of Quran. One was by the Christian kings of 11th century Europe and the other was by a Muslim after the fall of Ottoman Empire. Both were designed to have political gains, and were funded to spread “that word.” As a result, they deepened the chasm between Christians, Jews and Muslims.

The question is not about God’s word. Rather, it is about our understanding of it. We must honor the God-given freedom of each one of us, and finding the truth is our own individual responsibility, for it is us who are accountable for our action.

We must honor the scholars of the past, who interpreted and wrote exegesis as guidance and not dictum. We must also understand the environment that produced them.

In the case of Christianity, a majority of scholars during 15th century Spain had a different mindset than the men of the 20th century. They had the brutal power of the King Ferdinand behind them to force others to conform to their values or put them in the cauldrons or burn them.

In the case of Judaism, the values espoused by Maimonides of the pluralistic tradition of earlier Spain will have a more lasting impact than the values shared by the scholars after the Holocaust. The same story is repeated and traceable in all religions.

In the case of Muslims, after the fall of Ottoman Empire, a few scholars produced literature that was not kosher. The U-turn for Muslim had begun and took a steep curve after 9/11, and is gaining significant momentum towards pluralistic societies.

Had God wanted us to be obedient, he would have made us that way. We would have been a planet Jupiter or Moon and acted out the programming; circumambulate the Sun or the earth and remain in balance for eternity.

God did not put us on autopilot to circumambulate around something. Instead, he sandwiched a new component called brains between that elusive balance (heaven) and life and gave us the free will to find our own balance. Our model is the universe, where multitude of planets and stars co-exist respecting each other’s space.

Debates about the word of God will continue unhindered. As long as we do not have absolute power resting in a few hands, which would tempt them to impose their ideas on others, we will be fine. Thank God for America. Our Constitution guarantees our God- given freedom.

Truth is a much greater value in the society, following which everyone knows where they stand. It also is a trust builder. We must be free to question everything including God, God’s words and our own beliefs. The Hindu Scriptures say, “Satyameva Jayate” which was translated by Mahatma Gandhi as “Truth Alone Triumphs.”

Desi Media and Desi Plaza TV of Dallas

Comments Off on Desi Media and Desi Plaza TV of Dallas

Friends, a note about the progress of Desi Media in Dallas/ Fort Worth.

Thank God we have Fun Asia today that  is the defacto Communications Center for the Desi Americans living in North Texas. Almost all the social and cultural events have become successful in reaching out to the largest possible audience.

I am glad to see John Hamid and Shabnam Modgil are running the FunAsia Entertainment center,  TV, Radio and FunAsia Pages effectively. I am proud of them for what they do.

We also have a new portal, aka Desi Plaza TV is a
comprehensive web portal – loaded with information about the Desi** community. I
thank Dr. Krishna Puttaparthi and Manohar Nimmagadda for creating this portal
and including me in it as one of the many Desis in Dallas.

In the following interview I spoke way too fast and I was
not even breathing in between… I was surprised at myself. However, the previous interview reflected me in full, the link of which is at the bottom of the page.

I was speaking Desi English unbeknown to me. I
hope you enjoy the message of pluralism and my short anecdotes about what it
takes to create a cohesive society in the following  interview.

http://www.desiplaza.tv/index.php?option=com_hwdvideoshare&task=viewvideo&Itemid=156&video_id=25&fb_source=message

When I started the Asian News Magazine (1993-2001) and Asian News Radio (1996
-2001), and Desi TV (1996-97), my clear goal was to bring communities together;
it was born out of my personal need to connect with the Indian community.

I came to Dallas in 1980 but rarely did I know any Desi, all
the way until 1992, I knew a handful of
Desi’s then;  among them are;  Vinod Kumar, Kishore Asirvadam, Vinod Mathur,
Madan Goyal and Anil Dandonna. Then comes 1993, in just one year I got to know
everyone in the town, some of my earliest friends include but not limited to
Kundan Sharma, Shabnam Modgil, Syed Abu Talib, Abraham Thomas, Anu Agarwal and
a few others, but I reached out to everyone; Atheists, Baha’I (Ben & Simi
Moghaddas), Buddhist, Christians (Indian and Pakistani), Hindu, Jain, Jewish (there
are three Indian Jews in town), Sikh and Zoroastrians.  Obviously, I will not be able to list every active
Indian, Pakistani or Bangladeshi without writing a few words about them, so
that is entirely another topic – Desi History, some day, I will work on it.
My pet theme in the paper was the Calendar, where we listed
and talked (Radio) about every festival on a weekly basis and published a
calendar for people to find the events and go to places. As an Indian, I wanted
to promote the idea of learning about each other, to know each other and that
is when the Foundation for Pluralism came into being.

As an extension of that, I also ran a two year daily radio program called
Wisdom of Religion, all the beautiful religions of the world. The first program
on religion was by Dr. Hasmukh Shah on Hinduism.  We have done 100+ hours of talk on Islam,
Hinduism and Christianity and 50 hours each on Sikhism, Jainism, Buddhism,
Judaism, Baha’i, Zoroastrianism, Atheism and interfaith/pluralism. We did
workshops on all the religions as well.

Cricket took off big for the first time with the Gold Cup in
1996 and went on to become North Texas Cricket Association, where I was
president around 2002-04, and we won the international award for the best
cricket development in the America’s.  We
beat all the other cities in terms of continuing education of umpiring classes
for every team to qualify playing – from 6 teams in 1996, we made it to 32
teams and 16 playing fields when I left, we passed many resolutions including
creating the Premiere league.
We did a history of the Desi People on my Radio show as
well, as a dinner show.
A lot of things have developed from those efforts –
including 1220 Am and B magazine etc. The Asian News calendar was the
predecessor to Sulekha and Ek Nazar portals as well.

Thank God we have Fun Asia today that literally is the Desi communications
Center for people to do things that are Desi and glad to see John Hammond and Shabnam
Modgil are running it very effectively with TV, Radio and FunAsia Pages. I am
proud of them for creating this for the Desi People of Dallas.

Fun Asia is not only the dream of Dr. Farrukh Hamid, but was my dream and every
Desi’s dream as well,  a place to come together.
John Hamid has taken the company to new heights, making it a full
media conglomerate with TV, Radio and Print media.  They are constantly introducing new things
and of course, I love the food at FunAsia. Alibhai is one of the greatest chefs
around and I have known him since 1994.

We also had a TV show between Shiraz, Talib, Shabnam and I,
on Channel 52 in 1996. Shiraz was an outstanding editor and producer. Shabnam
and Najma (my late wife) were great anchors; they both have done well on Radio
and TV.

Here comes Dr. Krishna Puttaparthi, committed to serving the community through
capturing the Desi activities on video for nearly two decades.  He and Manohar Nimmagadda have started the web
portal www.DesiPlaza.Tv that profiles the
people of Dallas and what goes on here.
It does not stay here, it gets to the world. Please visit the portal and
find out what they are doing.

I did much better in the interview two years ago in the
following two part interview.
** The word Desi – pronounced “They-see” means people of the
Subcontinent, i.e., Bangladesh, Indian, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka (BINPS).

Israel Iran crisis is Netanyahu Ahmedinejad issue

Comments Off on Israel Iran crisis is Netanyahu Ahmedinejad issue
I came across this cartoon today and felt it is
very descriptive of the situation in the Israel-Iran conflict.  Leaders are the real problem and not the public.  Instead
of finding solutions, they talk about bombing. If we can zip up the mouths of Ahmedinejad and
Netanyahu, most problems will fade away.
Prime Minister Netanyahu genuinely wants peace for his
people, but he does everything opposite of the goal, so is Ahmedinejad, wants
the best for his people, but his foul mouth messes up everything.
Both men need to learn about setting a goal, and achieving
it with least damage. Their methodology has not worked. Netanyahu’s ideas will
not bring security to the people of Israel, the kind of security where the
Israelis can be free from apprehension, and can drop their guards and enjoy the life.  Do these men know that, they are the problem?
The radical politicians like Santorum and Gingrich, among several
others are a major problem. From one mouth they talk about security of Israel, but
from the other they do everything to make it worse for Israel. Men like
Horowitz, Spencer and whole lot of them are bent on making it all worse for
Israel and other nations. It is not Israel they care about; it is the gain they
can have in the name of Israel. Remember Madoff?
The Jewish people and the Israelis need to be aware of them,
they don’t need duplicity, they need genuine peace makers who have brought
security to Israel and through that the region. Men like President
Carter and President Clinton who had the foresight to see and deliver peace to the peoples, and I hope Obama will have the balls to stand
up to Netanyahu, do the right thing and leave a legacy of goodness to the people of Palestine and Israel.
Instead of finding solutions, they talk about bombing.
These two will destroy Israel and Iran and more than that, they will mess up
American for another decade if they have their way and weaken America in
fighting their wars that are not necessary.
As Americans, we need to know that the Israelis are speaking
up, which we don’t see on our Television networks, but they show it on the Israeli and
European media. This needs to change and we need BBC, Israeli TV and Al Jazeera
for Americans to have another perspective. How many Politicians and ordinary citizens among us are capable of giving another perspective to the issue? We are too brainwashed to even know that there is another point of view.
Should we give currency to the rhetoric of Netanyahu and
Ahmedinejad, or should the public demand them to perform in bringing peace?
Should the silent majority encourage wrong doing by their silence or should
they speak up and take charge of their long term security.
