Freedom Clip – India loses three legends; Rishi, Imran, and Chuni

Comments Off on Freedom Clip – India loses three legends; Rishi, Imran, and Chuni

Three points are made in this essay – freedom; relating to the movie clip from Rishi Kapoor’s film and my late wife; the current chaotic situation in India and the impending economic disaster.

India lost three legendary individuals; Irfan Khan, Rishi Kapoor, and Chuni Goswami in that order. I have seen two movies of Irfan- Life of Pi and Jurassic Park; Bobby and Duniya by Rishi, and have heard of the first-class cricketer Chuni Goswami, but not seen his play. Never the less three great individuals.

Their deaths have brought back a lot of discussions on the internet, they are relevant from what is going on in India today, unchecked, it will lead to chaos and instability, which will lead to political instability followed by a major economic disaster – every Indian will lose out at the end. India may become Afghanistan like for two or three decades before it recovers. You and I as Indian Americans may fear to go to India, we have to correct the course.

We need to honor these souls and come together as a nation and look to each other as Indians. We are Indians, and if there were an accident, we never know whose blood will save our lives.  India is losing its tradition of respecting and accepting the otherness of the others, and intolerance is growing.  All we have to do to stop is speak up against divisive attitudes, and speak for re-building a cohesive India.

The video clip at Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MikeGhouse/videos/2484341321665355/?t=6

The essence of the video clip from the movie Mulk is freedom.  Sadly, there are idiots in India and America who do not distinguish between Osama bin Laden’s beard and the beards of ordinary Muslims and Sikhs who go about living their daily life caring for their families and communities around them.  In the clip, Rishi Kapoor challenges those who question the patriotism of individuals – who the hell are they anyway? No one should have that right. Then he speaks about his beard, who has the right to tell what one does with his face?

The clip offers a great lesson to those who are biased against beard or burka, tilak, or saree. Let people be free to wear, drink, eat, or believe whatever the hell they want in the pursuit of their life, liberty, and happiness.

That dialogue will become a part of the teaching in cultural pluralism. I will have to express that in English. I have not seen the Rishi Kapoor movie but will make an effort to see it and understand what else is there in the film about the first amendment.

If you are familiar with any such clips in any language, please forward it. We are developing a curriculum to teach pluralism in politics, traditions, religion, dining, society, and the workplace.

I just watched the Launch of the movie from 10 years ago – it is so relevant to today’s India.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXWTsOcKG84&feature=youtu.be

I have become a fan of this producer Anubhav Sinha, we speak the same language of Inclusiveness. There are three people in my life that I have an intense urge to meet and they are Anubhav Sinha, Pope Francis, and Amir Khan for their pluralistic attitudes.

There are two statements in the above interview about Sikhs, and we both have uttered it in a similar fashion.

1. Anubhav Sinha says governments come and go, but we have to live together. Here is what I have written umpteen times, “Our enduring relationship is with the people of India and not the rulers. Leaders come and go but leave behind a trail of destruction. We have made a few foreign policy blunders in the past supporting the tyrant Shah of Iran instead of the people of Iran.  Thanks to President Obama for saving the relationship with the people of Egypt by asking Mubarak to step down.”

2. Anubhav Praised the Sikh community for bearing the brunt of tragedies but moved on. However the spark is not dead, we have to reconcile. Here is what I said,

“In recognition of your work in reaffirming the right values when tragedy befalls the community, and indeed, your response to the Wisconsin Gurudwara massacre was exemplary and reflects the teachings of the Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism and every one of the spiritual masters from Zarathustra, Confucius, Moses, Krishna, Mahavira, Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha, Baha’u’llah, and other great spiritual masters. Your leadership in building a cohesive America is greatly appreciated by all. Six Gurdwaras of Dallas were honored for their work a the Unity Day event, the pictures, story and the plaque at http://911unitydayusa.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html

Around 2005, my late wife, Najma’s family, was having Eid breakfast at our home. Najma announced that she was going to wear the burqa and looked at me as if I am going to fall off the chair. Everyone was watching for my reaction.

My first response was “hell no, you are not going to wear the Burqa.” but I choked, I choked for real, thank God for that. It gave me time to gather up and say, “Najma, it’s your choice, who am I to tell you what to wear or not.” She started laughing, and her family joined her in laughter. Then she walked and gave me a big hug (No public kissing in Indian culture) and said, thanks for your belief in freedom, you passed the test.  The clip is a similar dialogue about the beard.

I urge each one of you to take a course in the first amendment, Indian-Americans need that lesson badly, particularly the elected officials. You are an exception because you have read to this point.

At the center for pluralism, we have done three sets of three-hour workshops on 13 different religions for people to understand the ‘essence’ of every faith. We also did 780 hours of a radio talk show on all religions first hand from the moderate practitioners of each religion. The more we know firsthand about each other, the fewer the conflicts would be and open to each other and live with joy.

The prejudice of any kind chokes people’s happiness. Get rid of it and see how happy you feel about life.

India is a country of Particular Concern.

Comments Off on India is a country of Particular Concern.

Washington, D.C. – The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) today released it’s 2020 Annual Report, documenting significant developments during 2019, including remarkable progress in Sudan and a sharp downward turn in India. Recommendations made to enhance the U.S. Government’s promotion of freedom of religion or belief abroad in 2020.

Every Indian and every Indian-American wants the best for India. A cohesive India where no Indian has to live in fear of the other. Ambassador at Large for religious freedom, Hon Sam Brownback has been eloquent in tying religious liberty with the prosperity of a nation. The Department of State held a few seminars on the same lines during the Ministerial. I have done my share of work in holding several workshops on the subject.

Who is responsible for earning such a shabby title? That India is a country of particular concern? Of course, it is the acts of Prime Minister Modi and the work of Indian Lobby including the Hindu America Foundation.

I wrote to the Hindu America Foundation (HAF) to part-take in a petition urging India to give visas to the commissioners of the United States Commission on Religious Freedom (USCIRF) – at least three times to prevent India from getting the label, “A country of particular concern.” The Hindutva (not Hinduism) lobby believed that if they can throw money, parties, influence, and favors at the congress, India will not get the title. Through the back channels HAF had opposed holding meetings on Capitol Hill about India’s religious freedom issues – three sessions had to be canceled, including one by the Center for Pluralism during the Ministerial program by the State Department.

In another briefing organized by the Indian American Muslim Council on Capitol Hill, I appealed to Jay Kansara, the then HAF’s government relations man. I urged him publicly to take the initiative and get the visas for the commissioners. Let them find the facts, if India’s government is clean, they will earn a clean chit, if not they will be labeled as “Country of Particular Concern” and have to work hard to restore India’s good name. Let me be clear – the Indian Government is not the same as the Indian people, unfortunately, the people around the world have elected authoritarians, hence, the acts of the government do not represent the will of the people. The will of the majority of the people is always good, they want to live and let others live their lives.

I pity “some” of my fellow Indians who are completely blinded in love for Mr. Modi and his party, as long as he makes the life of Muslims, Christians, and Sikhs miserable, these men will continue to love him. What kind of love is that?

Ultimately every Indian will pay the price, including the Bhakts (his worshippers). Modi will bring disaster to India, what India has gained in the last 30 years will be lost – we still have the time to correct the course, but Modi will not do it. I have written over 35 articles on his whimsical governance. Modi releases a lot of hot air -Sab Ka saath, sab ka Vikas, and sab ka Vishwas (support from everyone, everyone’s prosperity, and trust) to appease his base. He does not mean a word he says.

There is a pattern with the Prime Minister – he lets his men destroy as much as they want, and he won’t say a word to stop it. During the Gujarat massacre, he said to his men, “I will give you three days to finish (Muslims) the job and the mob brutally killed over a thousand people.” When the six-year-old Asifa was gang-raped and mutilated and thrown in a temple, the man did not say a word until the entire nation stood up, then he spoke – reluctantly. Now, the Gulf countries have started talking – he saw that his corrupt rich buddies would lose out business – so he spoke halfheartedly. You will find a big list of such instances.

I am concerned, what kind of civilization we are looking forward to in India? A culture of sadistic men killing fellow Indians, burning their homes, and torching their businesses with no consequence? You may be appalled I am appalled to hear the statements like “Muslims are termites,” and, “I will throw the immigrants into the Bay of Bengal” are ascribed to the Home Minister of India Mr. Amit Shah, a close confidant of Mr. Modi the Prime Minister.

On top of it, Modi will give those murderers tickets to run for the public office (equivalent to US Congressmen). I appeal to Modi Bhakts (his devotees) – to be selfish, look at the economic and social disaster Modi will bring to all Indians, including you. You will not gain anything by harassing your fellow Indians, whether they are Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, and Dalits. You will not even get a Rupee! Don’t make India a Hindutva Taliban nation, in the end, you will lose too. Bad things don’t last.

Modis will come and go leaving behind a trail of destruction, we the people, Indians of all hues have to live together, let’s live without tension and fear of each other. Wake up and do what is right for you and your future.

I had challenged Modi to say the following sentence, and I had asked Dr. Bharat Barai, Modi’s left-hand man in America to convey to him. “I will not tolerate any Indian harassing other Indians, and I will not see my country divided. Those who spread hatred and hurt others will pay the price.”  Would he say that? That is all it takes to change the situation – one simple sentence.

What did he do instead? He started making suggestive comments like we can identify them (Muslims) by their clothes and caps, and they will distribute Biryani (India’s favorite dish). His men got the cue, and amplified on it, and executed the subtle hate order.

It is still not late for Modi to take corrective action, not sweet talk, but implement strict rules against hate speeches and causing deaths. Whether it is coming from Yogi or his fellow Parliamentarians.

There is a way out for India, and that is allowing the USCIRF commissioners to visit India and present a detailed report. If the Government of India has clean hands in the deaths and massacres of thousands of fellow Indians in Kashmir, Gujarat, and other states, they will withdraw the shabby title, “the country of particular concern.” On the other hand, if the Government of India has dirty hands, they will list it and suggest corrective actions. Is there any Indian out there who does not want to do the right thing?

The panacea to the issue is to allow the USCIRF commissioners to go find the truth. India is our ally and has denied visas to our commissioners. I hope the President and the Secretary of State do not close their eyes to this blatant rejection to the members of its own body.

Here are some of the many ‘specific’ warnings about India’ earning’ that label.

January 2, 2020 – In a press release and the letter to the Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, the following warnings were delivered. http://centerforpluralism.com/a-genocide-in-making-in-india-on-mike-pompeos-watch/

  1. A significant loss to America, an ally thus far, will become a “country of particular concern” and burden to the United States.
  2. India will not be a reliable bulwark against Chinese influence due to internal chaos and instability.
  3. India will not be an investment destination for Americans. The corporations with a conscience may not want to do business
  4. There are telltale signs of genocide in the making. If these trends continue, India may become a rogue nation like Nazi Germany and may be stuck in an Afghanistan-like situation for decades to come.
  5. The big losers will be Indians, the middle class, and the rich Indians who have made well in the last two decades, they stand to lose now.
  6. The Secretary can slap sanctions against Mr. Amit Shah and those involved in violations of human rights, as recommended by the USCIRF.

We have been urging fellow Indians to take the stand.

Did God make a mistake?

Comments Off on Did God make a mistake?

If God (he/she/it) had declared in the books* that the greatest sin a human can commit is arrogance, ahead of any other wrongdoing.  In the interfaith (1.01) meetings, you should see, everyone is anxious to claim that his/her faith is the oldest, scientific, rational, sincere, and all that bull. Take it from me, and no religion is superior to the other; all of them serve the same purpose; peace of mind. Remember, every mother is dear to her offspring, so is religion.

Had God declared, “Arrogance is the greatest sin,” some of the non-sense of superiority would have subsided?  My culture is superior, and we are more civilized than others – my religion is the only true religion. Arrogance dehumanizes the other, which creates conflict.

Do you care, do you speak out?

Comments Off on Do you care, do you speak out?

Do you believe in Vasudhaiva Kutumbukum – that the whole world is one family- that we all originated from a single couple spread out into different races, nations, and communities? By extension, religions? Do you care for fellow humans?

Do you speak out when bad guys insult other people’s religions? Do you know if you don’t speak out, the bad guys will continue to poison others? Edmund Burke, MLK, Gandhi, and others have said, “evil exists not because of evil people, but, but because the good people do nothing about it.

Innocent Hindus buy the battle cry by a few charlatans that Hinduism is in danger. I feel sorry for them to buy into the propaganda. Hinduism is 5000 years and does not need fake saviors; it’s an eternal Dharma. It will continue forever.

The charlatans instill the fear that the Muslim population is increasing, and the Hindu population is decreasing. In 1947 there were 300 million Hindus, and now we have 1,111 million Hindus tripling in 75 years. Whereas 92 million Muslims were in 1947, and now we have 196 million, they have just doubled and not tripled. Hindus have always been over 80% of India’s population, while Muslims have remained steady around 14%. The average Hindu, Sikh, Christian, or Hindu family had over seven kids in their home, and it’s down to 2 or 3 now. Your own family may have had large numbers once. You have to bust the myths the foul men spread for the sake of a cohesive India, where all of us can live in harmony.

Now, I urge every Indian to speak out against nonsense spewed about other Indians. We need to build a cohesive india and not a divisive one.

Before I ask you, I have walked the talk.

Each one must boldly speak out against hateful messages against Hindus or Muslims. I’m doing my part, everywhere I go, I speak out against ill-will spewed against any religion. I even spoke about Hinduphobia in a Passover Seder. Of course, it will cost me a few friends.

I believe the righteousness will prevail, and a Krishna will emerge among us to restore trust and truth.
Satyameva Jayate.

Thank you,

Not sure how many of you enjoy the morning sunshine. This morning, I got up with lots of sunshine on my face, loved the rays filtering in through the window, and loved the blue skies through my window. Being in home building, the last three homes I built, had the widows placed in the master bedroom to bring in the morning sunshine. Now, in the condo I am living, I just got lucky, the window brings in the sunshine, I keep my windows open, I love the morning light and seeing the blue sky!  God bless you all in DC area for the dawn of spring – its late by a month, but it is here now. Enjoy it.

The Republicans focused on the Rich and the big business while the Democrats fought for the small guys and small businesses.  What is great about America? It is the fight our system fights to ensure no one is excluded, whether they are represented or not. Our country continues to be a beacon of hope to the world, those who criticize us, we welcome their free speech, but look the effort we make to represent the unrepresented. We are not perfect, but no one comes close to us in treating our citizens equally.  I thank God for America

Ramadan – everything you wanted to know and more!

Comments Off on Ramadan – everything you wanted to know and more!

By Mike Mohamed Ghouse

The Spirit, Politics, and Rituals of Ramadan are the three main topics of this article. Ramadan is pronounced Ramzan in the Subcontinent, Iran, Turkey, and the Central Asian Republics wherever the Persian linguistic influence exists, elsewhere in the world, it is Ramadan. In the Arabic language, “Z” is “D” and hence Ramadan.

About 50 Random pictures of Ramadan around the world are at https://www.flickr.com/photos/mikeghouse/albums/72157713982572563 Courtesy of Boston Globe

The Rituals of Ramadan

Some may disagree but starting from our birth until the last rites of our lives and beyond, every moment is filled with rituals. Whether we go to the gym, eat, sleep, wear clothes, drive, or talk on the phone, we are indeed following rituals.

Rituals signify the milestones of our daily life. Every significant moment of the day is a ritual. It is an unwritten way of measuring our progression, a memory pattern to bring discipline to our actions. A disciplined life requires one to do things on time, manage personal relationships, drive to a destination, or keep within one’s means. The result of disciplined behavior is worthwhile for most people. When joyous, a sense of incompleteness lingers in our hearts until we get the opportunity to express that joy.

The spiritual masters have captured the human inclinations towards rituals and have molded it with the art of self-discipline in their respective religions. The purpose of each tradition was to bring a balance in our lives. Twenty-five hundred years ago, Buddha, the enlightened-one, explained that human suffering comes from unrestrained desires to possess and had recommended a middle path. The same recommendation came from Prophet Muhammad fourteen hundred years ago. Indeed, that is the wisdom of all religious and social traditions.  Therefore, fasting is an integral part of almost all major religions in which one must rise above his or her basic desires.

Every faith is composed of a set of unique rituals to bring discipline and peace to human life. Fasting is one of the five essential rituals that Muslims around the world observe. Ramadan is a month given as a gift by Islam to its followers to teach discipline and to bring moderation in their daily lives. It is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, which Muslims observe with ritual precision. It requires one to abstain from food, drink, intimacy, ill-will, ill-talk, harmful actions and other temptations from dawn to dusk, every day for a full month.

It’s a celebration time when Muslims around the world anxiously wait for the first moon of the ninth Lunar month to appear in the sky. The families gather in their backyards, or get on the nearest hillock or climb on top of their homes, and wait for the pencil-thin moon to appear on the horizon, and when it does, Ramadan begins. It is a joyous activity.

Right after the moon is sighted, an announcement that Ramadan has started is made and thanks to the social media, it reaches the entire Muslim populations within a few minutes, including Muslims in Amazon to Zulu land. Yes, there are Muslims there.

As the Christians do the count down from the first day of Christmas or Hindus express devotion for each one of the nine days through Navaratri or the Jews follow eight days of Chanukah, Jains observe nine days of Paryushan. Others follow a similar path and the Muslims count the next 29 to 30 days with a sense of devotion.

Muslims are required to pray five times a day and most fulfil this obligation, particularly during the month of Ramadan. Prayers can be congregational or individual and are performed in the morning, noon, afternoon, evening, and night.  During Ramadan, starting the night the moon is sighted until the night before the last day of fasting, additional congregational prayers called “Taraweehs” are offered following the regular nightly prayer. Every night, during the Taraweeh prayers, an Imam recites a section of the Quran which has 114 chapters divided into 30 sections.

Due to Corona, this year, every mosque around the world has canceled the congregational prayers, and Muslims will pray in their homes. However, the ultra-right Muslims like the ultra-right-Christians, Jews, Hindus, and others defy the orders and congregate anyways.

The Spirit of Ramadan

Although Ramadan is famous in the west for its culinary delicacies and fancy iftars (ceremonial breaking of fast at sundown), the spirit and intent of Ramadan lie in a human transformation achieved in a month-long journey of finding oneself in tune with spirituality.

What is spirituality? It is not wearing fancy clothes to separate yourselves from the others, as the clergy and kings in most traditions, do. Spirituality is to train our inner selves to decrease arrogance and sense of superiority and increase humility, empathy and compassion.

Knowing about hunger is not the same as knowing to fast. Empathy is not a rational equation; it is a human experience. Our hardness of heart often springs from our distance from the human condition of others. The poor, sick, disenfranchised, oppressed — we rarely walk a mile in their shoes, not even a few steps. “Rest assured,” cautioned one teacher, “if you do not taste what it feels like to be hungry, you will not care for those who are.”

God wants humans to learn to have empathy for those who don’t have, and learn to respect the otherness of others. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) added to that fasting of the stomach must be matched by the fasting of the limbs, eyes, ears, tongue, hands, and feet all have their fasts to undergo. The tongue’s temptations, for example — lies, backbiting, slander, vulgarity, and senseless argumentation — must be challenged and curbed to maintain the integrity of the fast.

The Consciousness of behavior and vigilance over action are the most profound dimensions of Fasting: The Fasting of the heart focuses on the attachment to the divine. That is when Ramadan becomes a source of peace and solace, just as Christmas goes beyond the rituals to bring forth kindness, charity, and caring.

True Fasting is self-purification; from this comes an abundant inner life that brings about values such as justice, generosity, patience, kindness, forgiveness, mercy, and empathy — values that are indispensable for the spiritual and social success of the community.

Fasting imparts a sense of what it means to be truly human, and its observance reflects its universality in Bahai, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jain, Jewish, Zoroastrian, and other faiths.

Ramadan will come and go with such stealth that we cannot but think of our mortality. What is it that we value, and why? Habits, customs, even obsessive behavior like smoking can be given up with relative ease in the face of a higher calling.

For fasting to be truly universal, its benefits must extend beyond the fraternal ties of Muslims and must continue to forge a common humanity with others.

The Politics of Ramadan

Politics plays a crucial role in our Temples, Synagogues, and Churches; Mosques are no different. Moon sighting is full of politics resulting in different start dates for Fasting and Eid (celebration at the end of month-long Fasting). Currently, various methods are practiced to determine the start date.

A growing number of American Muslims have adopted NASA’s calculations to set the start date of Fasting and Eid. Many Muslims believe in seeing the first moon with bare eyes to start fasting, and some follow others. Every group enjoys their tradition, and yet they are frustrated and wish that we all observe it on the same day. This year, most Muslims around the world will begin fasting from either on Thursday, April 23rd or Friday, April 24th, 2020 (Moon sighting to begin on the evening of April 22nd). In the pluralistic tradition of Islam, a majority of Muslims have accepted each method as valid.

The Traditions of Ramadan

Throughout the month of Ramadan, every day, with small variations in practices, families rise early around 4:00 AM and gather up in the kitchen to participate in preparing the meal. As a kid, I used to chop onions, one rolled the rotis (flatbread), the other blew air through a steel pipe into the old-fashioned earthen stove, one made the tea, and of course, mother managed it all. It was a family affair.

Traditionally, the entire family sits on the floor in a circle, says a short blessing, and eats the meal while having a conversation. Everyone has plenty of time to finish off the food and water intake at the call of Adan, roughly an hour before sunrise.

Then most people go to the mosque to pray, but this year, due to the lockdown to control the spread of COVID-19, all mosques are closed and Muslims will perform all the prayers at home.

Throughout the day, a conscious effort is made to abstain from food, water, or temptations that are detrimental to self-discipline. Those who do not observe Fasting, honor the ones who do, by not eating or drinking in their presence.

One should remain steadfast despite temptations; many a fast observing Muslims are open to their friends eating. Indeed, it adds to one’s will power to resist the temptation to eat, thus enriching ones’ faith and discipline.

One of the most appealing aspects of Ramadan is the domino effect other Muslims have on you to guard yourselves against greed, anger, ill-will, malice, hate, jealousy, and other ills of the society. One feels pious during the month. Of course, there would always be a small percentage in a group that does not receive that wisdom.

When the time to break the fast approaches towards the sundown, anxiety builds up, it is almost like the countdown of seconds when the space shuttle takes off—curiously watching when that big red ball of the sun sinks on the horizon. If it is cloudy, they follow the prescribed time. A prayer call (Azan) signifies the time to break the fast. It is called Iftar.

Prophet Muhammad had initiated a healthy way of breaking the fast; it was graduating the empty stomach with light items like dates, fruits, and veggies to prepare the stomach to receive a full meal after the prayer break. The dates are the most popular item around the world, they are chewy, meaty, and tasty after a long day of Fasting, and dates are also a preferred item as it was for the Prophet. It has the right nutrients to give one a smooth transition from fasting all day to eating a full meal. Indeed, each Muslim at least consumes three dates, which is 5.4 billion dates each evening for a total of at least 162 billion dates in one month.

The breaking of fast, also known as “Iftar,” has become a community event. It is an excellent opportunity for friends of Muslims belonging to other faiths to host the Iftars. It is a way to bond, connect, and build cohesive societies. Unfortunately, this year, no one is holding the iftar parties.

President Clinton started the tradition of holding an Iftar party at White House, which was carried forward by President Bush and then-President Obama. They invited a few Muslim leaders from around the United States. President Trump also held the iftars for the Muslim Ambassadors. It is a major social event for the politicians, just as it is with Christmas, Rosh Hashanah, Diwali, and other festivities.

After Iftar most people go to the mosque to pray Taraweeh. However, as previously mentioned, the mosques are closed this year, due to the lockdown to control the spread of COVID-19. Therefore, Muslims will need to perform all the prayers at home.

Now comes the 29th or 30th evening – everyone is anxiously watching for that new moon to appear again, this time to declare Eid.

Once the new moon is sighted (or go by the calendar), Ramadan ends and the Eid celebrations begin. In the Subcontinent, it is known as the Chand Raat or the moonlit festivities. Everyone rushes to the market to purchase gifts (same scenario as last-minute Christmas shopping) and food items (I am talking about 40 years ago when everything was bought fresh on the given day).

Families gather up in one large facility to accommodate the whole town, or the convention center, or a Mosque. In my case, back home in the town of Yelahanka, we all went to the open-air mosque by the cemetery and prayed together.

On this day, one formally forgives and gets forgiven and starts the year with a clean slate. The Quran says the dearest person to God is the one who forgives. Everyone hugs each other three times; I am your friend; you are my friend, and as friends, together we forgive each other. It is the equivalent of Michami Dukkadam in Jainism.

The phrases Ramadan Kareem and Ramadan Mubarak are usually used to greet each other from day one to the last day of Ramadan and Eid Mubarak, or Happy Eid is used on the Day of Eid.  Indonesia holds the largest Muslim population in the world and they say, “Selamat Hari Raya” – However, Eid Mubarak and Ramadan Kareem are the most popular around the world.

Traditionally everyone in the family wears new clothing, a symbol of starting afresh. The head of the family gives gifts, traditionally in the form of cash (called Eidi) to all members of the family to spend as they wish and to teach responsibility with freedom. If you have a guest celebrating Eid with you, then his Fitra is obligatory upon you too.  Every able Muslim also pays a special charity called “Fitra” for himself and for all his dependents. The Fitra for each person must be equal to the cost of a good meal and must be immediately distributed to the poor and needy.

A few years ago, I was in Louisville, Kentucky for Eid, and had written a similar piece and had suggested Muslims make the point to thank the police officers for ensuring the safety of the congregations. One the way in, I talked to a police officer and showed him the email appreciating them. He asked me to forward it to him. When we finished the prayers, the police officer had forwarded that email to his entire group. I urge my fellow Muslims to do that. We need to appreciate them, the firemen, and the military personnel in the uniform.

Don’t forget the poor and have-nots; Islam is about building cohesive societies to care for everyone. Indeed, two of the five obligatory rituals of Muslims take place in the month of Ramadan. One is Fasting, and the other is Zakat, which is like the tithe in Christianity, Daan in Hinduism, Sedekah in Judaism, and Dusvand in Sikhism, and there are other words in other traditions. Every family (except the poor) calculates 2.5% of the value of their assets and passes that amount on to the needy. It is an investment in human capital, to help uplift everyone on a level playing field to maintain a sustainable good in society. It is preferable to give Zakat during the month so that needy people can have it on time to be able to celebrate Eid.

On the culinary side, it is a feast! A variety of dishes are prepared, over the years I have discovered that the most common item around the globe is a dessert made out of vermicelli’s, i.e., hair-thin noodles cooked in milk with nuts, dates, honey, and other goodies, it is both in liquid or solid forms. It is a feast! Then each country around the world also has its own unique traditions.

A Challenge to Muslims

I am sharing this story with a particular reason. Sean Hannity on Fox News and I have argued extensively. He was afraid and gave his audience the impression that Muslims are striving to bring the Caliphate back; it was red meat for them. I argued, “Sean, it will never happen,” I am glad his marginal audience got my message.

Caliphate will never come back, there is no trend, nor there is a desire among Muslims. His peers genuinely elect the Pope; Muslims indeed chose the first four caliphs in the same manner. They were pious and faithful servants of people. They were exemplary humans.

Mu’awiyah ibn Abu-Sufiyan became the 5th Caliph – he killed the emerging democratic society among Muslims. Even though he called himself a Caliph, he became a dictator-King. His son Yazid carried the dictatorial tradition.

No Muslim wants that kind of Caliphs ever again, there were several competent caliphs in between through the fall of the Ottoman Empire in 1922, but most of them acted like dictator kings. The United States laid the foundation for actual democracy, and that resonated with Muslims and given a choice, all Muslims want freedoms, and indeed, currently, more than 60% of Muslims live in Democracies.

The other critical reason Caliphate will not materialize is the deep division among Muslims, and each group is hell-bent on declaring the other as non-Muslim or less than a Muslim. As long as that arrogance exists, any Caliphate is out of the question.

So here is a challenge to my Muslim brothers and sisters all over the world – by the way, whatever I ask others to do, I do it first. I urge my fellow Muslims to visit each other’s Mosque, to learn to respect and accept different traditions. Islam is about diversity, God says, he has created us as tribes, nations, and communities to which Prophet added, that someday his followers will multiply into an infinite (72) number of groups. Each one of us should compete in doing good deeds. A good deed is any act done with intention of serving fellow humans without expectation of any returns. It is like planting a tree knowing well that you will not be the beneficiary of its shade or the fruit.

Over the years, during Ramadan, I have visited Mosques of every Muslim tradition and about 30 of them; Sunni, Shia, Sufi, Ahmadiyya, and all their sub-groups. Indeed, I have documented the uniqueness of each culture. Particularly in the years 2011 and 2012.

Conclusion

For fasting to be truly universal, its benefits must extend beyond the fraternal ties of Muslims and must continue to forge a common humanity with others. Fasting is meant to impart a sense of what it means to be truly human, and its observance reflects its universality in Bahai, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jain, Jewish, Zoroastrian, and other faiths.

Although the annual ritual of Fasting takes thirty days, the journey to perfect spirituality is endless. May our heart continue to desire the deeper spirituality. May we aspire to find our balance, connect, open our hearts and minds to fellow beings; the joy that comes with it will be ours to keep, Insha’Allah forever!

Ramadan Kareem to all and be safe.

Muslim Organizations serving fellow Americans

Muslims have always been at the forefront of caring for fellow humans. They take Prophet Muhammad’s wisdom seriously.

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Prophet, peace, and blessings be upon him, said, “He does not have faith in me who spends the night satiated while he knows that the neighbor to his side is hungry.”

There is another hadith (Sayings ascribed to the Prophet) where his associates asked him. Prophet there is a person who prays all the times, and there is another one who does not pray, but before he goes to sleep, he knocks on his neighbor’s door and shares whatever little food he has – who will God be pleased with the most? Taking care of a neighbor was his response. Such is the importance placed on caring for the neighbor.

This link will remain open, and add as the names come forward. We thank Aliya Khan from Virginia and a participant in American Muslim Politics, a Whatsapp group, for suggesting to write up.

Indians Caring for Each Other

Comments Off on Indians Caring for Each Other

I believe good will triumph, of course, after a lot of sacrifices made by the haters and the hated both. Goodness will triumph is a corollary to Satyameva Jayate – i.e., Truth will triumph. Amidst the hate-spewing by Modi Media, Amit Shah’s trolls, and rampant hate-mongering, there is a lot of good news.

Muslims, in general, are to be appreciated and Indian Muslims in particular, are to be praised for their forbearance, patience, and kindness – despite enduring uncertainty and insecurity. We sincerely pray that God bears them the fruit, as he did when Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was pelted with stones, and he prayed for them instead, and at the end, they regretted and came to him with goodness.

Here are the good stories from India, it’s an open link and we can add more stories.

India’s fake stories

Comments Off on India’s fake stories

The following two paragraphs are a repeat from another article I wrote.

Evil exists in the world, not because of evil people, but because good people do nothing about it. I am urging good people to speak up, that is all it takes.

You must have watched Tigers chasing a herd of Buffaloes – they run like crazy, ultimately the tiger will get one of them. You must have also seen four or five Buffaloes turn around and face the tiger, and the Tiger takes a back step, then the Buffaloes run towards him and the Tiger takes a hike.

Thanks to all the newspapers who have countered the fake news. It would be great if it hits Hindi and regional vernacular. I hope we share this with our friends across the board.
