The Modi-Trump-Netanyahu-Erdogan “quad” will bring economic and social disasters to all of us. No matter how successful they are in mobilizing people around a divisive agenda, they will not lead us out of the chaos.

You have to admire the quad, they mesmerize their worshippers and get them to believe and do whatever they want them to do. Logic, fact, and reason do not matter to the cult worshippers, whatever their Lord says is the truth. They will attend Trump rallies despite the health advisory against it. When Trump says he can shoot someone on 5th avenue and not worry about it, he knows his cult. If Modi had said the same, his worshippers would have lined up to be martyred.

I have no problem with anyone doing whatever pleases them in the pursuit of their happiness. However, I hope the worshippers realize that these men are pied pipers in the likes of Jim Jones, Heaven’s Gate cult, Rajnish, and others. I hope they realize before it is too late. We want a prosperous society, where people trust each other and get along with others. We don’t need divisive cult leaders to lead us.

Erdogan converted Hagia Sofia into a Mosque, and it is a big mistake, which we all will come to regret. It will allow bullies like Modi and Netanyahu to follow suit. It will create chaos and confusion, hurt, and anger.

 We need to seek peace and not rattle up things. Islam is about creating peaceful societies and not chaos and resentments.

The paper tiger is full of talk – should Muslims buy his rhetoric? He is a Master in throwing the red meat to Muslim buyers by challenging Israel into a duel. Does that solve the Muslim problems of unemployment, poverty, and marginalization? He is fooling innocent Muslims as the other two do with their subjects.

Erdogan does not have the nuclear power to match Israel and win. His ship was sunk in the ocean by Israel – the paper tiger made loud noises, but did he do anything about it? Islam is a tool for Erdogan to consolidate his power hunger. Saddam Hussain also made tall claims and knelt within two days. Of course, we, the Americans, were wrong in invading Iraq and Afghanistan. 

I hope Israel does not take it as a challenge and take over the Al-Aqsa Mosque – what will Turkey do? What will Muslims do? These men are messing with Islam, in the name of Islam for their selfish power greed.   

We, the people, the Muslims should ensure that no human has to live in fear, of course, we have to make sure Muslims are secure everywhere.  

The most important Question for Muslims is to develop airtight constitutional democracies like ours, where Trumps can make attempts to violate but will be pushed back. Islam did not come to rule the world but foster harmony and peace to humanity.

Turkey vows to ‘liberate Al-Aqsa’ after turning Hagia Sophia to mosque

The resurrection of Hagia Sophia heralds the Liberation of the Al-Aqsa mosque, the Turkish Presidency website says.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to “liberate al-Aqsa mosque” from Israel after “resurrecting Hagia Sophia” as a mosque on Friday.

The decision to change the status of the ancient Hagia Sophia church, which had been transformed into a mosque in 1453 and then into a museum in 1934, was made controversially last week.

It follows an increasingly religious authoritarian agenda from Ankara that has made Turkey the world’s largest jailer of journalists, seen dissidents imprisoned for “terrorism” and witnessed increasing military invasions of neighboring countries by Turkey.

The resurrection of Hagia Sophia heralds the liberation of the al-Aqsa mosque, the Turkish Presidency website says. “The resurrection of Hagia Sophia is the footsteps of the will of Muslims across the world to come… the resurrection of Hagia Sophia is the reignition of the fire of hope of Muslims and all oppressed, wrong, downtrodden and exploited.”

The speech, which was in Turkish, was translated slightly differently to Arabic and English, apparently as a way to hide part of Ankara’s full views on how it has linked Hagia Sophia to a wider agenda.

In Arabic the speech says that turning Hagia Sophia into a mosque is part of the “return of freedom to al-Aqsa,” essentially meaning Israel should be ejected from controlling Jerusalem’s Old City where al-Aqsa is located.

Turkey’s president linked the decision to reviving Islam from Bukhara in Uzbekistan to Andalusia in Spain. This terminology, linking al-Aqsa in Jerusalem to Hagia Sophia and Spain, is a kind of coded terminology for a wider religious agenda. In the Turkish translation the same reference to Spain does not appear to be included as in the Arabic.

Turkey’s current president has long championed the Palestinian cause and been an extreme critic of Israel, famously walking off the stage at Davos during a discussion with former president Shimon Peres in 2009. Turkey then sent the Gaza flotilla to try to breach Israel’s blockade of Gaza, leading to the deaths of 10 Turkish citizens when Israeli forces raided the Mavi Marmara ship.

In recent years Turkey’s religious and political authorities have been making increasingly adversarial statements about Israel, vowing to mobilize the “Islamic ummah” in June against Israel’s annexation plans.

Linking the major change at Hagia Sophia to Jerusalem illustrates that Ankara’s ambitions are far larger than just reasserting Islamic prayers at the historic mosque and church in Istanbul; it is part of a larger Islamic agenda for the region.

Turkey’s ruling AK Party is rooted in the Muslim Brotherhood and Turkey is a close ally of Hamas in Gaza. Hamas is also rooted in the Muslim Brotherhood. This strategy by Turkey seeks more influence across the region with like-minded groups and countries, such as Qatar and the Government of the National Accord in Libya.

Turkey is seeking to supplant Saudi Arabia and other countries in the region, such as Egypt and Jordan, as the main determiner of what is “Islamic.”

This means Ankara’s leadership believes that its changes to Hagia Sophia are only one step of a larger religious militarist agenda in the Middle East. Turkey invaded part of eastern Syria in October 2019 after depopulating the Kurdish region of Afrin in Syria in January 2018.

Turkey then recruited Syrian refugees to fight in Libya’s civil war as part of an energy and military deal with Tripoli. In June, Turkey launched airstrikes in Iraq against Kurdish groups, claiming to be fighting “terrorism.”

One day, Turkey could even aim its sights at Jerusalem. The speech about Hagia Sophia clearly indicated this is on the agenda in the future.

Appeal to Turkey’s President Erdogan about Hagia Sophia  

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is considering converting the Hagia Sophia to a Mosque, which has been a museum since its conquest. As Muslims, we appeal to President Erdogan to keep it as a Museum, and not convert it to a Mosque.  I speak for many Muslims in appealing to Erdogan to let it remain a museum. 

 The Hagia Sophia, built as a cathedral in the sixth century by the Byzantines before serving as a mosque for 500 years, has been a museum since the 1920s, when the founder of modern Turkey, Kemal Attaturk, converted it to secular use. For the past few months, Turkey’s current president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has been making signs that he wants to turn the majestic building on the Bosporus back into a mosque.

Changing the status of Hagia Sophia, “one of the most contested buildings” in the world, according to a recent report in Al-Jazeera, would create needless animosity between Islam and Christianity, while offering only a short-term political gain for Erdogan’s pro-Islamic Justice and Development Party. 

 The idea of converting Hagia Sofia to a mosque offers a short-term political gain, but at the cost of long-term harmony between Muslims and Christians. 

The role of Muslims is to mitigate conflicts and nurture goodwill – a formula embedded in Prophet’s actions; he was a blessed peacemaker. Islam means peace, and it behooves us to achieve peace and harmony through our actions and words. 

The Greek Orthodox Church mourns the loss of their Church to Muslim conquest; however, they have accepted it. If this is converted to a mosque, it amounts to rubbing salt on the wounds. It will rekindle hostilities that none of us want. Today, the societies are moving towards respecting the otherness of the others. 

Hazrat Umar set a great example – after conquering Jerusalem, he was offered to pray in the Holy Sepulcher. He chose not to pray inside the church for the concern that the future generation of Muslims will convert it into a Mosque. 

Quran 22:40 essentially says God’s name is extolled abundantly in Churches, Synagogues, and Mosques. We have to protect such places of worship. God will most certainly assist him who succors His cause: verily, God is all-knowing and almighty.

The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) has paved the way for building bridges among different communities in the United States. It is the largest Muslim civic body in America. It maintains good relationships with all populations, including the Greek Orthodox hierarchy. ISNA has played Amin’s role in building a cohesive America and has earned the goodwill of Jews, Christians, Hindus, and others. Out of a sense of righteousness, they have stood up for Muslims against Islamophobic rhetoric during 9/11, and it continues today. We, the Muslims, appreciate them. 

 Dr. Sayyid M. Syeed, President of ISNA, said, “The conversion of the Hagia Sophia was against the historical examples set by the righteous Caliphs, beginning with Abu Bakr when he advised his general heading to conquer foreign lands. The Umayyad Caliphs apologized and paid for the church land used to build the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. 

As American Muslims, we celebrate this Islamic provision in US law that enabled us to build 3 thousand mosques in the last half a century. Hagia Sophia is not just a Church; it is the main symbol of the Greek Orthodox Church. It is a slap on the entire system of the Greek Orthodox Church and Greece. It fostered permanent hate against Muslims and Islam in those quarters.”

Dr. Syeed further adds, “The destruction of the Babri Mosque in India is a historical example of religious bigotry. We cannot do the same thing to Hagia Sophia.”  

Indeed, we have to be consistent in our policies – if we apply it in one place, we must be able to use it in every situation. As an Indian American Muslim, it hurts me to see the destruction of the Babri Mosque, and it equally hurts me to see the Hagia Sophia converted to a Mosque. We have to set an excellent example for the world. The Alhambra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, let Hagia Sophia be one as well.

 We urge President Erdogan to consider the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad, who was and is a mercy to mankind. He granted permanent protection to places of Worship in the covenant he issued in 628 AD. A majority of Muslims believe in the sanctity of the location of Worship. We hope President Erdogan can be a catalyst in correcting false perceptions about Muslims and not convert Hagia Sophia into a Mosque. The majority of Muslims will applaud him for walking on the right path. May God bless him.

I would like to make an important correction to the statement attached herewith:

The 1500 year old Hagia Sophia church was converted into a mosque after the Ottoman Conquest of Constantinopolis in May 29, 1453. Ottoman Empire was a polyglot empire and under its suzerainty people of all faiths enjoyed freedom to worship in their own temples and faiths.

The Hagia Sophia (Aya Sofia Camii) served as a mosque with its Christian ornamentation until 1931. It was converted into a museum in 1931.

This marvelous structure served as a Roman Christian church after it was built under USA time Emperor Constantine in 537 until 1054. It was then converted into a Byzantine Greek church and served as such during 1054-1204. Then It served as a Roman Catholic churach and back to Greek Orthodox Church from 1204 till the Ottoman Conquest in 1453.

It is a magnificent edifice and was used as a model for architectural designs for so many years.

Erdogan happens to be a populist and in his almost 20 years in government his political stance is eroding.

So he is playing with the idea of gaining favor among his constituents. It is unlikely to pass the muster in Turkey.

Turkey is a secular country by its constitution and it is unlikely to make much difference for his appeal to the public.

There are so many mosques in Turkey at this time and they are having a hard time to congregate adequate numbers of faithful to fill those mosques.

This just happens to be my opinion and does not represent any party nor affiliation. I just happen to be a friend of Ben Boothe who has put us all together.

July 4th Message – Muslims are a part of American Heritage. 

American Muslims consider July 4 as one of our cherished holidays. We uphold, protect, defend, and celebrate the values enshrined in the U.S. constitution.

WASHINGTON, D.C., THE UNITED STATES, July 4, 2020 –“America is the greatest nation on Earth. Indeed, Muslims are a part of the American Heritage from the very beginning with African Muslims, among others, help build the nation. Upon declaration of our independence on July 4, 1776, two of the first three heads of states who recognized the sovereignty of the United States were Muslims, and one of them was a Muslim from India.”

Morocco was the first country to recognize the independence of the United States of America and signed the Moroccan-American Treaty of Friendship, the first of its kind. Friesland, one of the seven United Provinces of the Dutch Republic was the next to recognize, and Tipu Sultan, the King of Mysore State (India), was the third.

America means everything to Muslims; indeed, America is a natural home for Muslims. Let me share a few of the many values that resonate with them: Equality, Merit, Innocence, Free will, and Justice.

Equality — Thomas Jefferson wrote the immortal declaration of our independence on July 4, 1776. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”

This declaration resonates with Muslims as Prophet Muhamad made a similar announcement on March 6, 632 AD, Eleven hundred forty-four (1144) years before Jefferson’s declaration. “All mankind is from Adam and Eve; an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also, a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action.” 

The concept of equality is etched and nurtured in the Muslim psyche in every ritual and spiritual practice of Islam. There is no other country in the world that offers genuine freedom, freedom of speech, and conscience.”

 Yes, American Values are Muslims Values!

Merit — Honoring merit is a Muslim thing as well. The Prophet tells his daughter that she will not get a free pass to paradise because she is his daughter; she has to earn it on her own through good deeds to fellow beings, such is the emphasis placed on merit and individual responsibility.  

Free will — It is one of the most cherished values of Islam. First, God gave a choice to Adam about eating or not eating the fruit. But when Adam Chose to eat, and God did not stop him; God honored his own words – he gave Adam a free choice, and Adam exercised it. God uploaded the inalienable free will in all of his progeny. 

Second, God wanted to make sure free will is the most critical value for humanity, and he delivered that in Chapter 2, verse 256 of the Quran. – There is no compulsion in matters of faith – no one has a right to force anyone to believe otherwise. 

Third, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) reinforced the ideal by not compelling his uncle to believe in the message of accountability to one creator. He could have, but it was meant to emphasize free will. 

Yes, American Values are Muslims Values!

Innocence — Every immigrant in general and a Muslim, in particular, loves the idea that you are innocent until proven guilty. They see the wholesomeness of Justice in America, and they love America for it. An observant Muslim recites at least 17 times a day that God alone is the judge, and we must refrain from judging others.

Justice — Prophet Muhammad said if you cannot stop the oppressors and unjust rulers and injustice, the least you can do is to speak up. Justice is a critical factor for peaceful and secure societies. If there is no justice, there is chaos.

That is what is happening in America today – Black Lives Matter. The injustice meted out to the Black people has to stop, and thank God almost every American is speaking out against racism. And I am glad to see Muslims are speaking and participating in the protests.

 Yes, American Values are Islamic Values!

Now back to the shared heritage – Both George Washington and Tipu Sultan fought our common enemy Lord Cornwallis – Washington chased him out of America, and Tipu Sultan defeated him in three wars but lost to him the fourth time. Cornwallis bribed Tipu’s confidant Mir Sadiq to get information about Tipu’s whereabouts and hit him from the back. Had Mir Sadiq not betrayed Tipu, India would have achieved her freedom in 1799 right behind America in 1776. 

Both George Washington and Tipu Sultan died in the same year1799.

Google Search for Mysorean Rockets – It was the Tipu Sultan invention and he also invented the Torpedo, known as Bangalore Torpedo.

American Muslims building a cohesive America

The following article is a rebuttal to Darrell Pack’s few outrageous assumptions in the weekly Blitz while presenting a critique of the book American Muslim Agenda. However, he is right about many things he has written and is appreciated. The essence remains the same, but the applicability changes; for example, traveling is the same, once it was understood to be on a camel, now it is a car or the plane.  The same article is also published in Jihad Watch both have refused to publish the rebuttal.

Mr. Pack writes, “He has become the final and perfect interpreter of Islam.” Hell no, I am offering my understanding of Islam, and by no means, it is the final or perfect interpretation of Islam. The essence remains the same, but the applicability changes; for example, traveling is the same, once it was understood to be on a camel, now it is a car or the plane. 

When I was searching for a religion to choose, I developed certain criteria as a checklist – respect for all humans, equality of humans, respect for other faiths, inclusive attitude, and Pluralism. Unitarian Universalist, Bahai, and Buddhism were a good fit for me, then Reformed Judaism, Hinduism sans-rituals, Sikhism sans-rituals, Christianity, and other religions were all appealing to me. I chose Islam as it was the religion, I had criticized the most. 

Let me be clear; Just as Hindus, Jews, Christians, Sikhs, and others do not fully represent the teachings of their respective religions, Muslim practices do not represent Islam either. Again, it is not all the practitioners, but the ones who do wrong.

The radicalized ones among these faiths are Islamists, Hindutva, radicalized Zionists, and Neocons, and they do not represent the values of Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, or Christianity. They all abuse their respective religions to satisfy their base instincts. None of these religions advocate killing others, but these groups do. These groups operate with a limited mental capacity and want to annihilate others rather than respect the otherness of the other and learn to live with fellow humans.

As a young man, I had concluded that Islam was not for me as practiced by some Muslims. In 1998, when my father in law, a Muslim scholar pointed to me that Islam was the only religion acceptable to God and other verses that were equally discriminative, I said to myself one last time that Islam was not for me. 

Within a few days, I accidentally came across a verse from Bhagavad Gita, which challenged me. The meaning I got from it was, finding the truth is your responsibility. I decided to find the truth by rejecting the dished-out versions of Islam and found out that the Quran was deliberately mistranslated to create ill-will towards Muslims and then by a Muslim translator to create ill-will towards Jews and Christians. Now, it is all in the open. To top it off, I read Karen Armstrong’s book, Muhammad, which led me to choose Islam as my religion. 

Robert Spencer, Tarek Fatah, Pamela Geller, and others still hang on to the mistranslations. Tarek Fatah and I had a duel on that, and embarrassingly he had to shut up. There are over 50 translations now, and three are deviant, whereas a few are good, and most others are ok. I stick to the interpretation by Muhammad Asad and Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar for verses about women. 

 I will never claim Islam to be superior to any religion, or any religion to be superior to the others. It would be sheer arrogance, and arrogance is the mother of every conflict. All religions serve their purpose to bring harmony and peace to an individual. Islam fits my requirements of Pluralism and inclusiveness.   

After I chose to become a Muslim, I listened to the criticism of Islam, the Quran, and the Prophet, as I could relate with their take. I now welcome it and find answers, instead of repelling. I am a confident Muslim who can respond to most criticism with grace, instead of giving unsatisfactory answers that God said so, or it is the sunnah.

Freedom of speech is the cornerstone of Islam. Criticism will not make Islam disappear; the Quran is not going to vanish, nor the Prophet is going anywhere. By opening ourselves to criticism, we will learn a lot more about our faith than we will ever know. Criticism is indeed a catalyst in expanding one’s knowledge. There is a full chapter on the topic in the Book American Muslim Agenda. 

Mr. Pack misinterprets my writings and says, “The essence of Islam is totally in keeping with liberal Western values.” No, sir, it is in keeping with universal human values of Islam.

He further adds, “If it is good for Islamic public relations among Westerners, then it is true. If it does not play well with his target audience, it is not authentic. Such an approach is not legitimate historiography.” Again, the same assumption, I don’t have westerners as my target audience; it is for everyone who misunderstands the Quran, including Muslims. Prophet Muhammad was clear in his last sermon; I am leaving this book for you to read and understand it. He did not assign responsibly to Al-Azhar or some Shaikh to explain Islam to me. I am expected to read and understand it in the context of creating peaceful societies.  

The Quran says, God is the creator of the universe, Muhammad is a mercy to the world (Aalameen), and as a follower, I will do my best to be kind and just to my fellow humans. I am sharing what I have learned. Over the ages, Islam has gathered layers of cultural dust, and I am one of the millions trying to clean it. 

I don’t have a problem with anyone questioning Islam, the Quran, and the Prophet. Most of the questions you may have are answered in the book, American Muslim Agenda. If you have further questions, I will do my best to share the wisdom of Islam.   

The next generation of American Muslims will know that Islam is committed to creating cohesive societies where every human feels secure with his/her ethnicity, culture, race, and religion.  

If it is not common sense, then it is not Islam.

Feeling worthwhile

The reason I wrote this note is to encourage you to serve fellow humans who need a shoulder to cry, an ear to listen, and a heart to feel their anguish on this Father’s Day. Every one of us has the desire to be acknowledged and want to care for fellow humans. This morning God listened to me and made me an instrument of peace to 3 individuals who seem to be in insurmountable grief. It was their Father, who was not there for them. Hearing them intently, feeling empathy, and connecting with them, brings relief not only to them, but it brings a sense of meaning to my own life. You can earn such blessings.

If you lend an ear to the ones who are enduring pain, you will also receive good energy. Blessed are the peacemakers, indeed

I am pleased to share a compelling video about raising kids by Prof. Dr. Javed Iqbal; it is in Urdu/Hindi language. He talks about raising responsible, independent kids.

Let me share some of my experiences. Both of my kids had to make their beds every morning before they get their breakfast. I had a clipboard with a checklist for making the bed and keeping their room clean. We walked, and there was always a reward for higher scores and no compensation for lower scores.  My kids did not like it at that time, but I enjoyed it when my son told me the difficulties, he had with a roommate during college who would pile up dishes in the sink; finally, he moved in with a roommate who kept the place clean.  It was a joy when my daughter corrected me in making my bed, the sheet outside the bed was not straight, and I loved it. They are responsible kids.

Thanks to Ella, my ex-wife, who was determined to teach our kids the value of independence. Both of them moved out and went on their own as adults. My son bought his first home when he was 21, and refused to take down payment from me – he said, Dad, it is your money, you keep it. Neither kids wanted funds from us, even when I tried to give ‘Edi’ – that is a tiny gift paid to family members on festivals, they resisted, but then reluctantly accepted it as it was my tradition.  

I am proud of my kids when I croak my insurance money is going to fund the Center for Pluralism, and some of it will go to my family members. They want to earn and live with their own monies. That is a lot of self-respect! I am glad, Center for Pluralism is my lifetime commitment.

 I had a habit of rewarding my girl when she scored all A’s. One day she said she thought she made all A’s. I jumped and handed her a $20.00 bill for the four courses in high school. Later that evening, she returned an envelope with $5 in it with a note, “Dad, I scored A’s in three and not the four.” I loved her accountability. 

We also taught them gender-free work; that is, there is work at home; whoever is free must do it.  A few months ago, I saw that translated by my son.

 When his kids were fighting about toys, my son taught them that the toys belong to the family and that we share—what a beautiful lesson. Like my father did to me, he is doing to his kids – never scream, yell, or spank, but reason with them.

During Ramadan, in my childhood, the whole family got up at 4 AM, and each of us, mother, father, four boys, and the girl, was involved in preparing the breakfast (Sahri) meal by 5 AM. The sense of togetherness was a beautiful experience to cherish for a lifetime. 

Dr. Iqbal’s story is identical to mine – We did have domestic help, despite that, I washed my clothes and even went to the Yelahanka Lake and washed the clothes on the granite slabs on the edge of the shallow lake. 

I was a fanatic about cleaning, even though the cleaning lady would come regularly, I had to clean by bolting the front and back door and wash the cement floors. My father was not happy at times, as I did not allow anyone inside until the floor was dry. We keep our place clean even today.

Never can I forget the embarrassment we felt when Mohan and Sujatha came home, who are were clean freaks as well. She casually placed her finger on the top fireplace mantle and saw little dust on her finger, my late wife and I noticed it, and were embarrassed to no end. Thanks to them, every Saturday, I clean every piece in my place.

One the front of prejudice, the biggest joy of my life is seeing my kids are prejudice-free. While they were little kids, I took them to every place of worship bar none. I did not want my kids to grow up and be biased towards any human being of any faith, race, or ethnicity. I am satisfied with my life and will continue to write pieces on raising kids. Of course, I have made mistakes, regretted them, and have apologized to my kids.

I feel sad, so many parents not only die with their hatred for others but also attempt to dump that sewage on their children.  

Please treat your children with dignity if you want them to treat you with dignity. As adults, we are equal.  Listen to them, and you will be amazed at how much they knew about life. Indeed, by listening to them, I learn from them. Raise your children as you wish them to be and walk the talk. A lot of joy is waiting for you.

Pakistani NGO denies food to Hindus and Christians.

June 17, 2020, Washington, DC — The Center for Pluralism condemns the shameful act of a Pakistani NGO for denying food to Hindus and Christians during the Corona epidemic.

It is a disgusting act, this Muslim and Muslims across the world condemn it. Pakistan claims to be an Islamic country, but its behavior is not Islamic.  Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had said, “When you eat stomach full and let your neighbor go hungry, you are not among my followers.” Such is the emphasis placed on caring for fellow humans.

Shame on Karachi’s Saylani Welfare trust. They have been refusing food assistance to Hindus and Christians, arguing that the aid is reserved for Muslims alone.

They need to learn about Islam; from the very first chapter to the 114th chapter of the Quran, God addresses humanity and not any particular group. Your duty to care for fellow humans is placed above all other duties.

Examples abound where a woman of the street (sinner) sees a thirsty dog, and she goes around and finds water and saves the dog, and per the Prophet, her sins will be forgiven. Quran adds, saving a life is like saving the whole of humanity.

 There is another story where the Prophet’s associates ask him, who would be a better human – the one who prays all the times or the one who does not, but when the night falls, he walks over to the neighbor and offers a share of his food. The answer is obvious.

 We urge Prime Minister Imran Khan to put a stop to this non-sense and restore sanity. Every Pakistani should have equal rights and equal access to food and water. Evil acts continue not because of the wicked people, but because reasonable people don’t speak up.  

PM Khan wanted to model Pakistan after the Madinah Treaty, where all citizens were treated with dignity and respect and had the freedom to practice their faith. It is time for Khan to walk the talk.

The Center for Pluralism and the supporting organizations welcome the Press Release by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) and the Annual report released by the U.S. Department of the State (DOS) in June 2020. 

The USCIRF made a recommendation to the DOS about the gross violations of religious freedoms in India and listed India as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) and suggested penalties against India’s Home Minister Amit Shah, the man behind the violations. 

The CPC designation has severe consequences for India. The major global corporations that are interested in India’s prosperity will hesitate to do business in India due to social and political unrest. Most companies in the world want to do business in a stable nation.

The biggest economic threat to India is the loss of prosperity gained by the employees and the companies in the information technology sector. The employees and employers stand to lose all the gains they have made in the last twenty years. In the end, every Indian stands to lose.

Prime Minister Modi earned the CPC title by his calculated silence. He has a record for letting the bad guys do whatever they want. He had once said at the beginning of the Gujarat Massacre to his men, “You’ve three days to finish the job.” meaning kill as many as you can. It resulted in the killing of over 1000 people in February 2002. 

Modi lives on with his three days formula – An 8-year-old girl Asifa was gang-raped and butchered into pieces, Modi did not speak until the whole nation was agitated. Ansari was brutally beaten with crowbars; Modi did not talk until the entire country condemned it. There were 114 such incidents during his six-year reign. In March this year, his men placed the saffron flag on their homes to identify Muslim homes who did not have the flag – they burned several houses and killed nearly 50 people. Modi did not speak or even had the courtesy to visit. 

Christians and Muslims are given an ultimatum by a few members of the ruling BJP Party, that they (230 Million) have three options. Convert to Hinduism, live as 2nd class citizens, or disappear. Mr. Modi has not said a word to allay the fears.

Prime Minister Modi needs to repeal the unnecessary Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), and the protests will stop at once, and the nation’s social and political stability will return. The demand for birth certificates is to separate Muslims as the Jews in the Holocaust were pinned Megan David on their sleeves. As per the provisions of the law, if one is a Hindu or of other faith, he/she gets automatic citizenship, but Muslims will go to the detention camps. The great Indian people of all religions have joined the protests, and they have realized, discrimination to one is discrimination to all. The demonstrations are identical to the George Floyd protests across the world.

The Modi government arrested a pregnant woman Safoora Zargar for protesting. She was slapped with false charges. Mr. Amit Shah has extensive experience with making up charges against the people he doesn’t like or, worse, killing them in fake encounters.

Kaleem Kawaja of Association of Indian Muslims of America (AIM) adds, “We hope the Government of India heeds the reports issued by the Department of State and work on correcting the course and save India from the destruction of social structure leading the economic disaster.”

We offer the following solutions to restore sanity and democracy, take back the title of CPC, and recognize all citizens are equal under the law. 

We urge the Indian government to issue the visas to the Commissioners of USCIRF to verify the truth and make the recommendations to rectify the wrongs heaped on Indian Citizens, particularly the Kashmiri citizens. 

We urge the Prime Minister to speak up and tell the nation that he will not tolerate lynching, cow vigilantes, raping, and harassment of fellow Indians. The calls for Christians and Muslims to convert to Hinduism or live as second-class citizens will be pushed back, and the callers will face serious consequences.

1952 MANDYA, KARNATAKA, INDIA — The Chief Minister of Karnataka (then Mysore state) Sri. Kengal Hanumanthiah called on a Mayor’s meeting in the Town of Mandaya, and I am delighted that I have that souvenir book of all Mayors in Karnataka – here is a page from Yelahanka. My father was the Deputy Mayor at that time.

Later on, he became the Mayor of the Town of Yelahanka. Its population in 1952 was about 20,000 – of which Muslims were a meager 150, yet he was very popular among all the people.  He remained on the council through the late ’50s. I remember going to the council meetings with him and running around the meeting table. One distinct thing I remember was the map of the town of Yelahanka. Since then, I have developed a fascination for Maps. I can draw plans of most places, including Bangalore and Yelahanka.  

Mohamed Abdul Rahman, when he spoke, people listened. The town has remained free from Hindu Muslim conflicts, he and Mayor Ramas Swamy quell the possible conflict when Ganesha Statute was passing by the Mosque and a few people wanted to create a conflict. My father was the Amin of the town, and the entire town called him Mamu.

Everyone came to seek his advice on marital relations to property disputes and everything else. He always made time for everyone.

He broke many traditions, including having the Dalits in our home, eat with us, and my mother would make tea for them, and we all used the same glasses. Most of his Brahmin and Muslim friends were angry at him for treating them with dignity.  That was the time when Dalits (untouchable was the word used then) people were not allowed in anyone’s home. As a teen, I followed my Dad’s example and fought with many people to get equal access to the Dalits at the tap on the street corner for water or the well on the Yelahanka Kere (lake).

The most humiliating thing I have witnessed was to see Dalits waiting until all others took the water from the tap. On top of it, when they were through, the upper caste people would wash that tap like there was no end to washing. Even the President of India, who is a Dalit, must have felt the humiliation when the temple was washed and cleansed several times after his visit.

If I had remained in Texas, I would have run for the Mayor of Carrollton and would most certainly have been elected. The transition from the president of the largest homeowner’s association and commissioner-at-large at the City would have made it easy.  Two former Mayors had urged me to run.  I had dropped all desires to be in politics and have chosen to do what gives me the most pleasure; Human rights, Freedom, Pluralism in Religion, politics, society, and workplace.

I am finding myself copying my father subconsciously, and thanks to my Father and Mother, who are role models for me.  They considered everyone in the town to be their family, and I feel the same about fellow humans with a bias towards none.

Amin was the title bestowed by Jews, Christians, and Pagans to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) – he was trustworthy, told the truth, stood up for justice for every human and they felt safe around him. My father followed him in practice and looks like I am treading the same path.
