God Bless the Darfurians

Thank God, there is hope for the people of Darfur now and pray that it ends their suffering in the hands of brutal dictators. They have witnessed a genocide right in front of our eyes.

Save Darfur coalition shares this, “Today is the first day of voting in the referendum which will determine the destiny of millions of Southern Sudanese. Voters will cast ballots from today through January 15. And it will take weeks to gather all the ballots from remote areas – only then will the results be announced. Official observers expect an overwhelming vote for independence, but we may not know the final outcome until early February.

Beard is not the determinator

Comments Off on Beard is not the determinator

Bearded Mumtaz Kadri shot the very person he was to guard; Punjab Governor Salman Taseer. The Governor was faulted by him for speaking out against the blasphemy laws.
Congresswoman Giffords from Arizona was shot for her support for the health care reform. How do we differentiate between these two, for those who are biased towards beards, beard is certainly not a determinator.

Both are shameful acts and fanaticism and intolerance creeps in every society, and we need to chuck this by not pushing the radicals to the corner and cause them to dig in their heels. We have to find a way out for every one for creating and sustaining social cohesion and a society where no one has live in fear of the other.

A corollary to Chinese wisdom; if you want to eliminate extremism, have discussions with them in open, give them the attention they are craving, a whole lot of them will see other point of view if we see their point of view. It takes patience but results ought to encourage, the other choice will create an ongoing conflict.

Follow up on Asia Bibi Petition

Appeal for Justice to Pakistani Asia Bibi and Mercy to mankind
The following note is in response to the comments floating on the internet in the last few hours.  Please read some of the comments an amazing mind-set is in the works.
As people of faith, also should be known as peace makers, we cannot cause people in conflict to dig in their heels and take positions, we have to mitigate conflicts and nurture goodwill for the ultimate good of all. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) applied that method in many of his examples.  I hope you understand the avoidance of such language in the petition.
Three (of the thousands on my list) individuals wrote, “It is too much. You are really becoming a problem for Ummah. Why are you aggravating the situation? Do you know what are you are going to lose – your both the worlds perhaps?” Another one writes, “Islamically, insults and abuses against the Prophet Muhammad, pbuh, count as acts of war and rebellion against a justly created Islamic entity. The Qur’an commands terrible punishment for such acts of war. “Finally, the third one writes, “Salman was a shame on Islam”.
Those were the right wingers among Muslims, a minuscule, statistically insignificant number of people but can become players by shining the media light on them. These guys are fodder for the other right wingers;  among Republicans and the Fox people. The left on the other hand shouts that we have to declare a war on right wingers. Mahatma Gandhi had aptly said an eye for an eye will make the whole world blind.
Prophet Muhammad’s wisdom comes as guiding light; follow the middle path. Every one has a God given space, if we can learn to respect that, conflicts fade and solutions emerge. Keeping that in mind, we have crafted the appeal with a clear goal of finding solutions, which is a deep desire in all parties.
As moderates we are an overwhelming majority, we can express our support to the middle path and ask the extremists to study the prophet and spread goodness in his name and not oppression.

Congratulations to Dallas Pakistanis

PSNT Oath Ceremony – Pakistan Society;
Installation of newly elected officers
Congratulations to Dr. Rabia Khan the new president of Pakistan Society of North Texas and her executive team, and Dr. Irfan Toor and his outgoing team for a job well done.
The Pakistani community needed this positive change, particularly a woman President representing the community in the civic affairs of the D/FW Metroplex. It will gradually change the perceptions about Pakistan in particular and Muslims in general. I welcome this and again congratulate the community for choosing a very capable woman to run its affairs.
It was a delight to see a smooth transition. This is a good positive thing and hope the tradition is carried forward with the same smoothness.
It is a pleasure to be appreciated when you serve and turn over the servicing to the next group. It was indeed a painful moment to some teams in the past who devoted their time and were not even acknowledged. I am glad to see the freshness in this approach, most past presidents were present and that is really a good thing. For all the painful moments that Dr. Irfan Toor had endured, it was a great relief for him. I am happy for you Dr. Toor.
I have been observing, writing and watching the happenings of the PSNT for the last 18+ years with the Asian News Magazine, Asian TV and Asian News Radio that brought all the communities together and have continued with this Forum, Dallas Pakistanis, a reliable source of information for the last decade.
I have seen all the ups and downs and this is a good positive move forward. I wish the very best for the community. There is nothing like feeling a sense of community.
This forum, Insha Allah will continue to serve the community.

Dreaming your 2011 – Imagining your 2011

I hope you’ll take the time to reflect on what you want your 2011 to be, in terms of romance, family, faith, finances, education, vacation, job and income.

What is important and what is worth brooding? What is worth ignoring? What is worth chasing… gather the courage to scribble it down on a napkin – make that your holy napkin and save it, frame it…that is your blue print for 2011.

Indulge in wishing and day dreaming, and you may find yourselves a goal for 2011. It is worth your time to conjure up your 2011 and you may actually find yourselves edging towards fulfillment of your day dreams. Thanks to the creator, my family, friends and the people I know and my fans for making my life beautiful and meaningful.

You have the absolute freedom to choose how you feel, what you want and what you can achieve and you have the absolute right to deny yourselves all that is good in life. The choice is clearly yours.

Give this a shot – volunteer at least 3 hours a week where you know no one, serve the strangers, and particularly the ones you do not like… If you hate gays, go volunteer in a gay church, if you don’t like a certain religious group, go serve them, if you don’t like the white folks or black folks; serve them. As a life time volunteer, I guarantee the happiness for you for years to come. Believe me, I will do this over this weekend, sadly, there is not a God’s creation that I hate or dislike, unless you want to piss me off, then it becomes obligatory on my part to serve you, and I will.

Israel and the rule of Law

Comments Off on Israel and the rule of Law

A Martin Luther King Jr. is needed in Israel to bring fruition to the universal idea of “all are equal before the law” It will lift a huge spiritual burden off the conscience of the ordinary Israelis and the Jewish people around the world. I do wish well for all the people of the world to strive to find peace.

Ex-Israeli President Katsav convicted of Rape. Prime Minister Netanyahu shared a thoughtful comment for a change. “This is a sad day for the State of Israel and its residents,” Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement after the verdict. “Today, the court conveyed two clear-cut messages — that all are equal before the law and that every woman has exclusive rights to her body.”Indeed, it is the rule of law that needs to be admired about the state of Israel.

However, I will go back to our own history when the founding fathers declared, “All men are created equal” but it’s emancipation took a century to treat “African Americans equal” and about 150 years to recognize that “women are equal members of the society” and finally the Civil rights acts legally gave the full meaning to the idea of “all men are equal”.

The State of Israel is where America was two centuries ago. The words by Prime Minister Netanyahu “that all are equal’ are without any depth to it.  The few right wingers that run the state are getting away with its apartheid policies towards Palestinians against the Jewish public wishes. A Martin Luther King Jr. is needed in Israel to bring fruition to the universal idea of “all are equal before the law” It will lift a huge spiritual burden off the conscience of the ordinary Israelis and the Jewish people around the world.

A few years ago, a Jewish educator friend had had cut off talking with me and retuning my emails. When I accidentally ran into him in a conference, all he had to say was, “ I have nothing to do with you” on my ‘why’ question,  he blurted,  “You have written about  that lousy Jimmy Carter and his book on your website who is anti-Israel, and that does not go well with me”. I know he was not speaking for the Jewish people.

I do hope some one will wake up and address the anguish of the ordinary Jewish folks and ease the burden of mistreating Palestinians for their own peace of mind.

Things will not change, unless the silent majority of Jewish people speak up.

Ex-Israeli president Katsav convicted of rape

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Former Israeli president Moshe Katsav was found guilty of rape and sexual assault, more than four years after he was first accused.

The unanimous verdict of the three-judge panel was announced in Tel Aviv District Court on Thursday.
Katsav, 65, was convicted of raping and sexually assaulting A., a former employee of the Tourism Ministry. He was also convicted of sexually harassing H. and of sexually abusing and harassing L., both employees of the President’s Residence, and of obstruction of justice. The incidents occurred when Katsav was serving as Israel’s president and tourism minister. The victims’ names have been kept in confidence by the courts.
Katsav was accompanied to court by his lawyers but not by his wife, Gila, who previously had stood by his side throughout the proceedings. Katsav’s attorneys said they would appeal the verdict to the Supreme Court.

The trial lasted for one year. Two years ago, Katsav declined what was seen as a lenient plea bargain — one that dropped the rape charges for lesser charges and likely would have left him with a suspended sentence — saying that he wanted to clear his name in court. Most of the trial was held behind closed doors to protect the identities of the accusers.

A sentencing date has not yet been set. A rape conviction carries a minimum prison sentence of four years and a maximum of 16 years.

Katsav, who immigranted to Israel from Iran in 1951, became president when the Knesset elected him in 2000, upsetting candidate Shimon Peres. Peres became president in 2007 after Katsav resigned in the wake of the allegations, shortly before the end of his term.

“This is a sad day for the State of Israel and its residents,” Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement after the verdict. “Today, the court conveyed two clear-cut messages — that all are equal before the law and that every woman has exclusive rights to her body.”
