THE BOOK: American Muslim Agenda

Most Muslims have shied away from confronting difficult issues about Sharia, and the essence of Islam. Beyond the five pillars, Islam is about creating cohesive societies for all humanity to live in harmony. I hope the Imams and Muslim scholars who are free thinkers would appreciate the contents of the book. This book may indeed become a reference manual teaching Islamic values that contribute to creating a better world for all humanity. I hope the book would initiate debates and discussions about the nature of Islam. I welcome your criticism (after reading the book).

You can get the book by calling 1-888-795-4274 x 4528 or get it from Amazon online or a book store. You can find the talking points at www.AmericanMuslimAgenda.com

Trump’s Biases

It may be worth studying the source of Trump’s biases. Was he biased against Mexicans, Muslims, and Indians, leading his supporters to carry that towards Jews and others?
Does he have a history of making such statements prior to running for the Office?

Wall Street Journal had interviewed me last year about a speech I did not give across the White House. A fake Muslim org propped by Russians had hosted a rally across White House in September 2016, when the organizers did not change the words on their anti-American placards I chose to back off, but my name was listed as a speaker and that’s what led the Journal to call me.

We need to find out if Trump’s anti-Muslim rhetoric was fed by Russians branding Muslims as Anti-Trump even before he was Anti-Muslim?

The Russians had staged (60) Events that include Fake Muslim Events.

Imam’s Hate Speech against Jews

As a Muslim, I condemn the ignorance of Pittsburgh’s Muslim preacher Imam Na’eem Abdullah. All humanity should condemn it, not just Muslims, I have two solid reasons to condemn his sermon and present 55 different translations of the verse from the Quran. All our Jewish friends can use this as a reference article about false claims of a few right-wing Muslims. https://centerforpluralism.com/pittsburgs-muslim-preacher-spews-his-ignorance/

Hindu Temple Vandalized in Louisville.

What a shame! The men who vandalized a place of worship in the name of Christianity are so wrong, Jesus would not approve any of these acts, how do we communicate to them about this? We the people of faiths, all faiths need to come together to mitigate extremism. I urge everyone to start seeing the fact that it is not the religion, but the individuals who don’t get their religion create this mess. We must all unequivocally condemn these acts. https://www.hinduismtoday.com/blogs-news/hindu-press-international/kentucky-hindu-temple-vandalized-with-crosses–christian-phrases/16620.html

Tulsi Gabbard’s candidacy is questionable.

I urge the Hindu Americans to look for candidates who will build bridges between fellow Americans https://www.indiaabroad.com/blogs/tulsi-or-kamala-the-choice-before-us/article_cb88f95c-2293-11e9-828a-6ff1ac4c3995.html

What is behaving as equals between husband and wifi mean?

A friend shared an article from John Hoxie on Facebook, and it is one of the best explanations of thinking, believing, talking, acting and behaving as equals between men and women, particularly between husband and a wife. https://centerforpluralism.com/what-is-behaving-as-equals/

Gender Pluralism & Misogyny

A few Men tend to be insecure about their own worth compared to women and devise ways to feel secure by causing women to be vulnerable. I am not talking about the Taliban in a distant land, but https://centerforpluralism.com/gender-pluralism-and-misogyny/

What do you want America to be?

If your idea of America resonates with the work we have done in the link below, we invite you to join us as a volunteer, donor, writer, and an activist. Three requirements are; you must be willing to be prejudice-free towards another human, and that you respect the otherness of the other’s faith, race, ethnicity, culture, and the way of life, and the third one is a tough one, but the right one; that you are willing to shed the arrogance that your religion is the only way or the superior way, but, acknowledge it as one of the many ways. We go easy on the third requirement as we all have to grow into the idea. Arrogance is the root cause of all evil on the earth. At the Center for Pluralism, our ultimate goal is to create a society where each one of us feels secure with who we are, what we believe, what we eat, drink or wear or how we live and whom we love.

Valentine’s Day’s – a Universal festivity

      Comments Off on Valentine’s Day’s – a Universal festivity

This article was first Published on January 14, 2019 at – : https://centerforpluralism.com/valentines-days-a-universal-festivity/

Love has no bounds. Valentine’s day has moved from an exclusive rendezvous between two lovers to a universal meaningful expression of caring between any two people, and as a futurist, I see this morphing into a global affection day within a decade.

Throughout the history of language, words have taken on new and expanded meanings; Valentine’s Day is no exception.

It’s a relationship of caring between two people in love, husband and wife, mother and son, father and daughter, mother-daughter, brother-sister, brothers, sisters, friends, uncles, aunties, Grandpa and Gramma, friends, and anyone you care about.

Please feel free to say happy Valentine’s Day to your sister, mother, brother, daughter, dad, uncle, or friend. It is a much bigger world now than it started out to be. Take them out for dinner and send them flowers and let them know that you care if you are the only one for them at this point in life.

As Americans express it by presenting red roses to our loved ones, the Filipinos will break another record; the number of people kissing at the same time, Brazil will have another essential festival on her beaches celebrating love. You are welcome to share other such expressions. On the other side of the world, a few frustrated ones with life go to the other end. I am embarrassed to report, it is a day of harassment in some places, the Romeo squads will be out harassing and hurting two people enjoying their lives together.

If you miss the love in your life; you have an opportunity to fulfill it. There is plenty of love in you that you can give it to others by feeding the homeless, visiting lonely patients in the hospitals or nursing homes, disadvantaged women and children, our veterans… share whatever little you have with them including the time and just listening to them. When a homeless person asks, give whatever you can, that is the most affectionate thing to do, you will enrich yourselves far greater by sharing.

Whenever the word affection comes to mind, I picture my dad and recall the way he called out my Mother’s name Khairun, it was romantic and filled with tenderness, and I have always enjoyed the sound of it, it was soothing to hear.

On this day, besides enjoying each other’s company, I would suggest you know the loved ones. Learn about each other’s take on issues of life and learn to respect the difference. There is nothing more peaceful than knowing yourselves and knowing about your loved ones.  You don’t need to compare with anyone on the earth, and there is none like you, you are one in 7 billion; you have your unique thumbprint, eye print, DNA, taste bud, colors, foods, smells, sights… by God, you are your model!

Conflicts begin when you want the others to change for you, drop that idea. When you learn to respect the otherness of the other and accept the God given the uniqueness of each other, conflicts fade, and harmony emerges. When you recognize the uniqueness of each other, right love flourishes and brings eternal peace to you.

My expressions would be incomplete without honoring the poet of love, Mirza Ghalib, one of the greatest romantic poets of all time who composed his poetry in Urdu/Hindi and Farsi.

Ishk per zor Nahin, hai an o aatish Ghalib
Ke lagaye na lege, bujhaye no bujhe.

Affection is that flame O Ghalib,
you cannot light it up or extinguish it, it just happens.

Happy Valentine’s Day.

Are you ready for 2019?

Comments Off on Are you ready for 2019?

This article was first Published on January 1, 2019 at – : https://centerforpluralism.com/are-you-ready-for-2019/

We wish you, your family and friends the very best in 2019.

Each year is a new milestone in your life.  Indeed, the New Year’s eve is as much a day of celebrations as is a day of reflections. You reflect on the reasons you did not get what you wanted out of 2018, and the party is cheering for the effort you made to be where you are today. Here are a few suggestions to chew on, and it is worth your while to glance at it.

If I was to ask you on 12/31/2019, how was your 2018?
You may respond in one of the following ways;

Nothing Changed,
Things have gotten worse
Celebrating the achievements
Lost or gained weight
Relationship entanglements and disentanglements
Financial soundness or mess
Bonded well with family and friends
Another thing

Let’s focus on two extremes; things that got worse and things that are worth celebrating. The question is, did you get what you want? Did you work for getting what you got?

Nothing happens by itself; things happen because someone causes them or makes them happen. Did you let others drive your life or did you drive it yourselves? You cannot go on vacation unless your dream about it, think about it and plan on it. You cannot buy anything unless you start with a want. Unlike the planets, stars and many other things in the universe which are programmed to function precisely, humans were not put on auto-pilot, they were given a free will to chart their course.

God does not do anything for you or me. He cannot do good things for you and not for others, God has created everything in balance,  and has given us the free will to restore the balance if we lose it. The responsiblity is entirely ours how we want our lives to be. We have to make an effort.

John was drowning in floods, and he refuses to go with firefighters and the rescuers. The water keeps rising, and he climbs up on the tree, water reaches up to his neck, he goes further up to the very top of the tree. A helicopter throws him a rope to catch. He screams I don’t need help from humans; God will help me, I am an excellent pious man who gave much charity.  Finally, he drowns and appears in front of God and challenges God for not helping. God booms back, John, I sent you the helicopter, what else did you want me to do?

God has laid everything out for you to pursue your happiness and peace; it is up to you to get it. Here is a simple way of getting what you want! The first thing is to know what you want.

Buy a dozen 5×3 Cards or fold three regular blank white papers and cut them out into 12 pieces. Write the following down on top of each piece and place them in your pocket or purse. Here are your 12 or more cards to jot down the points as to what you want out of each item of life.

Family
Friends
Profession
Income
Health
Vacation
Volunteerism
Spirituality
Retirement
Self-improvement
A new image
Your special item

As you start driving, making coffee, watching TV or whatever you are doing, take one piece at a time and start thinking about it, until you have clarity of what you want, don’t stop believing. Pull the car over or go to a coffee shop and sit down and write your thoughts in bullets. Did you know you can daydream while taking a shower? Can you think better sitting on the crown?

You know it all, why should you write down?

If you are a religious person, it would be easy for you to understand. Remember, God tells you to ask him? Don’t you think the creator does not know what you want? Of course, he does, but he wants you to remove the fog to your jumbled up thoughts and bring clarity to what you want. That clarity takes out the confusion and makes your focus on a few things when you are focused; you can commit to working towards achieving them. Don’t forget the rope from the helicopter.

At the end of the day or two, take a picture of each card/paper and save it on your cell phone. One of the evenings, you may want to sit down for a few hours and put it all together. This would be your guideline to go by, and this would be your plan for 2019. The more you stare at it, the more it becomes a part of you.

12/31/2019

If you were to receive my note on 12/31/19, and without any doubt, you will. If you’ve received this note, you will get that one too unless you block me. You can proudly say that your life was as planned on 1/1/2019. Why do I do this? It is merely because my mission in life is to build cohesive workplaces, communities and nations and open people’s hearts minds and souls to fellow beings. Everyone has a purpose in life, find yours now. Mine is to make life meaningful to as many people as I can.

I am pleased to share what we do at the Center for Pluralism.

Center for Pluralism is a non-profit organization founded in 1996 (as Foundation for Pluralism) based on a simple principle; the more we know about each other, fewer the misunderstandings would be.

CFP is committed to vigorously promoting and advancing pluralism in the realm of religion, politics, social and cultural aspects of life. We have published over 3600 articles on promoting harmony and reconciliation, appeared in over 300 national TV shows and 200 Radio talk shows.  We have also produced 780 hours of talk on the wisdom of religions, all the beautiful faiths.

CFP will continue to focus its energies on ensuring a safe and secure America for all, where no one has to worry about his race, faith, ethnicity or other God-given uniqueness and live her life without apprehensions.

Our programs are designed to prevent chaos and maintain coherence and stability with the ongoing changes. We need to prepare the next generation to cope with these changes and minimize potential conflicts with ease. No American needs to worry about losing his or her way of life. As Americans, we uphold, protect, defend and celebrate the values enshrined in our Constitution.

The Center for Pluralism has established over 20 annual programs to bring Americans together on religious, social, political and cultural aspects of life. The more we know each other, the fewer conflicts we would have. Please review our programs and except the Religious workshops and Unity Day all other events can be run as your sponsorship for $5,000/year, but you can contribute any sum that is in your budget. Please review them in this mini-Brochure at – https://secureservercdn.net/166.62.107.20/1kk.055.myftpupload.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/4.-CPF-Programs-4-Pages.pdf

CFP will be an antidote to Anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, Racism, Homophobia, Hindu phobia, Xenophobia, Misogyny, and other phobias. Through research and activism, we are establishing a respectful space for policymakers, interfaith groups, both Republicans and Democrats and of course the media and you!

The Center for Pluralism will become the energy to give a solid, cohesive social structure to our nation. By the year 2025, there will not be an office, school, playground, college, restaurant, theater, train, bus or a workplace where people of different faiths, races, ethnicities, and national origins do not work, interact, play, live and marry together. This beautiful blending is bound to create conflicts in airports, public spaces, boardrooms, and in bedrooms as well as places of worship, workplaces, politics, eateries, and schools.

We have a responsibility to shape the future of our society so our kids, grandkids and us can retire in peace and live without apprehensions.

If your idea of America is reflected in our work, and we hope that your vision for America resonates with what we are doing. If you feel, this is what you always wanted America to be, and I welcome you to join the Center for Pluralism as a volunteer, donor (big or small), inspirer, encourager, and a writer with all your heart mind and soul. Whatever we do, we do it wholeheartedly.

California’s first Muslim Judge

Comments Off on California’s first Muslim Judge

This article was first Published on January 2, 2019 at – : https://centerforpluralism.com/californias-first-muslim-judge/

Congratulations to Judge Dhanidina, a Muslim Judge.

As an American Muslim, I am proud of this appointment, and indeed, this was the dream of our founding fathers; a perfect union where every American has a right to serve the nation in any capacity he or she chooses. Inclusion encourages one to stake his or her claim in the nation-building and ensures security and prosperity of our country.  It is a patriotic thing to serve as a Judge.  We are proud of you Judge Dhanidina!

Here is the information, “Justice Halim Dhanidina was recently elevated to California’s Courts of Appeal, making him the state’s most senior judge of the Muslim faith. “Halim Dhanidina is a justice of the California Court of Appeal for the Second District. Appointed to the Los Angeles Superior Court bench by Governor Jerry Brown in 2012, he is the first Muslim ever to be appointed judge in California. He is an Ismaili Shiite of Gujarati Indian heritage.” Wiki.

News Hour Weekend Special Correspondent David Tereshchuk talks with Dhanidina about engaging with supporters and critics alike, and setting an example for what it looks like to be a “Muslim judge” in the United States.” Here is the info about Judge Dhanidina – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27m2iEdfYv0&feature=youtu.be

Over a decade ago, when Hon. Sada Cumber, a Shia Imami Ismaili Muslim was appointed as an Ambassador to the OIC, it was a joy for me.  Ambassador Cumber had told me that I was one of the few Muslims who had congratulated him, and he appreciated for publishing the note in the Austin Statesman (Newspaper).

Here is a quote from the upcoming book, “They refused to share their teaching material because they thought I was an Ismaili Muslim; how ridiculous can one get and I am glad they did that, we have produced great teaching material on Islamic values, and it has never been done before in this format.” So what if I were an Ismaili Muslim? Indeed, our work will become a reference material to teachers of Islam, interfaith leaders, politicians and clergy of all faiths, it shows verses from Quran how they contribute towards creating peaceful orderly societies for the common good of humanity.   We have a choice to condemn bigotry or say nothing, and if we say nothing, we become an accessory to perpetuating wrongdoing.  We still have to deal with prejudice from within.

It is a shame that the immigrant Muslims not only carry the ill-will towards each other’s denominations, but they also poison their children with their biases. I am so glad that the kids born in America reject their parent’s bigotry, and embrace the Quranic value of respecting the otherness of the other. There are two significant chapters on Islamic values and Pluralism in the upcoming book, American Muslim Agenda, and the information is at www.AmericanMuslimAgenda.com

Muslims lag in understanding Pluralism, a Quranic value.  Currently, Aga Khans’ Pluralism Center and Diane Eck’s pluralism project have produced an inordinate amount of literature on Religious pluralism.  The Center for Pluralism has produced a tremendous amount of material on Pluralism in religion, politics, culture, and workplace. CFP’s work is listed at https://centerforpluralism.com/mission-accomplished-at-the-center-for-pluralism/

Thank God for the encouragement of several Muslim leaders, of particular mention are Dr. Basheer Ahmed, Dr. Nauman Anwar, and Dr. Frank Islam from the Sunni Muslim community.  Mr. Farooq Wazir Ali from the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslim Community, and Dr. Zia H. Shah from the Ahmadiyya Muslim community to name a few. More and more Muslims have started seeing the roots of Pluralism in Islam. With the release of the upcoming book, I hope to speak about Pluralism at different public gatherings around the country.

I hope my fellow Muslims of all denominations congratulate Judge Halim Dhanidina.  As Muslims, we have to take pride in our collective contributions to America and the world. We are all Muslims whether we are Ahmadiyya, Alawite, Bohra, Ismaili, Sunni, Shia or any of the many sub-denominations.

Dr. Mike Ghouse is a public speaker, author, pluralist, a Muslim and the executive director of the Center for Pluralism in Washington, DC. He is committed to building cohesive societies and offers pluralistic solutions on issues of the day.  More at https://www.linkedin.com/in/mikeghouse/

Dr. Shahid Shafi and Muslim Republicans are far from winning

Comments Off on Dr. Shahid Shafi and Muslim Republicans are far from winning

This article was first Published on January 13, 2019 at – : https://centerforpluralism.com/dr-shahid-shafi-and-muslim-republicans-are-far-from-winning/

Dr. Shahid Shafi and Muslim Republicans are far from winning

Even though the victory is a landslide with 74% of the vote in his favor, Dr. Shahid Shafi and the Muslim Republicans are nowhere near winning the battle.

The attempt to remove Dr. Shafi from the vice chairmanship of the Republican Party in Tarrant County failed by a 139-49 vote held in Fort Worth, Texas. The only reason they wanted to remove him was a Muslim.

Darl Easton, chairman of the of party declared the victory, “This vote reaffirms the commitment by a majority of Tarrant County Republicans to our core values and moral compass, a demonstration of our allegiance to the Texas Republican Party Platform and the Constitutions of the United States and Texas, which strictly prohibit religious and racial discrimination of any kind.”

Dorrie O’Brien, a precinct chair of the area Republican Party, led the movement to oust Dr. Shafi. She assumed that the Muslim Doctor prefers Sharia law over the U.S. Constitution.

Winning the votes is not the real win, it is winning the hearts and minds to build enduring relationships that matter. The real victory for Muslims will come when fellow Americans accept Muslims with no ifs and buts. Together as Americans, we have a responsibility to learn about each other to restore trust, so we can go on living our lives and continue contributing towards building a cohesive America where no American has to live in apprehension or fear of the other. It is a two-way street.

The battlefront is Sharia.

First of all, Muslims shy away from making comments about Sharia, as they don’t want to meddle with religious sensitivities of the people, and that is a problem.

Justice is the one word that wraps God, balance, harmony, order, and cohesion together, and that is the foundation of all societies. Without justice, things go awry, and if not checked, it will make life difficult for everyone.

Each society, civil or religious, has its code of conduct that it operates from, and Islam is no different. Sharia in its purest form is a how-to-serve-justice manual based on the Quran and the hadith (Prophet Muhammad’s sayings and life examples). Indeed, it is a human effort to understand the concept of justice enshrined in the Quran for the day-to-day living. Sharia, like all other human laws, including the laws of the United States, has its shortcomings when it comes to just applications of the law.

Sharia laws desperately need amendments. Our constitution has been amended twenty-seven times in 240 plus years to be in tune with the times, as they are designed to be timeless. Whereas Sharia laws have been frozen in the last 1300 years (an invention nearly a hundred years after the death of the prophet) with no amendments, not even the DNA test is admissible in case of rape, Sharia law ridiculously demands four witnesses. Of course, the intent was to prevent false accusations.

The Chapter Sharia and Fixing Sharia Laws are explained in detail in the upcoming Book, “American Muslim Agenda.” I hope it paves the way to find solutions to the conflict between Muslims Americans and fellow Americans. To find an American solution, Sharia is bifurcated into Personal and Public Sharia, it is a seminal article in Islamic history.

Personal sharia deals with how you pray, fast, pay tithe, perform the religious rituals, take care of the vulnerable, fulfill the obligations due to neighbors, earn an honest living, marry, raise the children and bury the dead. It is a personal relationship between an individual and the Creator.

Whereas, the Public Sharia involves a third party to administer the relationship between two or more individuals like divorce, violation of business contracts, adultery, theft, and other issues.  Over the last few centuries, the apostasy and blasphemy laws have crept into Islam, yet, they have no basis in Islam. Indeed, such rules are the tools of oppression for the dictators and monarchs.

Over the years, the Muslim establishments have resisted holding a conference on Sharia to clarify the issue to Muslims and allay the fears of fellow Americans.  One head of a Muslim organization told me, “As long as I am president of the organization, you will not do a program on sharia, let alone talk about it.” No discussion was allowed, shutting the other board members from even talking about it, and this is what goes on among Muslims.

Sean Hannity had relentlessly pursued anti-sharia rhetoric on Fox News. All he wanted was an assurance from the Muslim community that they have no interest in sharia as practiced in Saudi Arabia or Iran. In reality, the American Muslims have detested such laws and would not want any of that here in America, but they have failed to express it. I have explained the reclassification of sharia into personal and public applications, which Hannity understood and has refocused his charges on Public sharia.

As a Muslim, I support the personal version of sharia that is between the individual and the creator but stand firmly against the public Sharia. We are Americans, and the law of the land is our law, and there is no substitute for it.

Islam is about free will, and that was uploaded into Adam and Eve, the value was asserted in the Quran and practiced by the Prophet.

I hope this clarification brings the rest of the 49 Republicans on board with the 139. For our communities to be successful, all of us should take the time to understand each other and respect the otherness of the other.

American Muslims have placed their trust in the American justice system and will continue to oppose the kind of sharia “that is prevalent in a handful of Muslim majority nations across the globe.” No Muslim organization in America has asked for it—none. I will be one of the first ones, if not the first one, to stand up against Sharia for the public.

The following two videos explain Sharia:

The genesis of Sharia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBcUVQmi6dU&t=4s

Christian Sharia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8xf9aTD3Ds

Republican Congressman Pete Sessions had agreed to sponsor the event on Capitol Hill, unfortunately, after nearly 20 years, he lost the election. I need to find a Republican Congressman to sponsor and a Democrat to co-sponsor once the shut down is done with and we resume a normal life.

Dr. Mike Ghouse is committed to building a cohesive America and offers pluralistic solutions on issues of the day. Standing up for others

If you don’t stand up for other’s why should anyone stand up for you? Keeping up with the tradition, we have stood up from Atheists to Zoroastrians and everyone in between.  The latest is the story of Fishel, a Jewish Pakistani who wanted to go to Jerusalem, the holy place for Jews to be a part of Passover. Pakistanis passport does not allow travel to Israel. I took it up with Ambassador Brownback in a meeting and presented him the letter urging Pakistan to issue a pilgrimage visa to Jews and Christians who want to visit Jerusalem. He was going to speak with the Pakistani authorities. The good news is Fishel is called in for an interview. The letter at https://centerforpluralism.com/pilgrimage-visa-from-pakistan-to-israel/

Good News from Pakistan

The “Islamabad Declaration” recognizes that Pakistan is a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country; therefore, (point 6) “it is the responsibility of the government to ensure the protection of life and property of non-Muslims living in Pakistan.” The initiative represents a turning point in the history of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, which has been marked by attacks against minorities such as Christians as well as “infidel” Islamic sects like the Ahmadis and Shias. Holocaust and Genocides event

The 14th Annual Holocaust and Genocides event is an effort to stand with the men, women, and children who have endured the apprehension from lack of religious freedom. India’s Oppressive Caste system

Many of you who are born in America, and are sixty and over, have witnessed the blatant bigotry of a few men against Blacks and Jews. It was not the Christian thing to do, but yet, those who professed Christianity treated fellow humans in an un-Christian way. Likewise, not Hinduism, but Hindu Sharia called “Manu Smriti” has dehumanized a third of Indians billion plus population. It is disgusting, and I am glad my father went against the whole town in uplifting the Dalits, he was yelled at for allowing the Dalits to eat in our home in our plates. He was the Mayor of the city, no one could do a thing to him, and I have fought off discrimination against Dalits at the public taps. Of course, it is the conscience of a majority that should wake up to change things, as did in the US.  Why I left Islam

The following story is about a guy who left Islam. I can fully understand him, I had left Islam and had remained an Atheist for nearly thirty years. I am glad I did, as it gave me a chance to learn Islam first hand, rejected all that was dished out to me and studied it critically. Indeed, I invited criticism of the Quran, the Prophet, and Islam, and the public flooded me with it. I said to myself, if I find answers for these, I will choose Islam if not, I will stay out of it.

The book was named American Muslim Agenda way back in 2001 when our Yahoogroup was created. My fellow Americans who have misunderstood Muslims will see the right picture,  and my fellow Muslims who have misunderstood Islam will wake up to see the pristine Islam that they long for, it is not lost, we have to revive it.

Islam is not about the ruling, governing or dictating others; it is about living your life and letting others live theirs, one of the 12 values of Islam is free will, which, a few among us have forgotten. I have cited the Quran extensively with reinforcing practices of the prophet.

There are occasional references of wisdom drawn from Atheism to Zoroastrianism and every faith in between. You will see Jesus in Muhammad, Torah in Quran or Bhagavad Gita’s reflections or Buddhas Middle path or Nanak’s service to humanity.

You may like this note that Dr. Frank Islam highlighted.

“I am intrigued by the book, particularly the chapter on the Essence of Islam. The great Talmudic sage Rabbi Hillel in the first century BC said, “What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor. That is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation of this to study it!” Dr. Ghouse responds to Rabbi Hillel with a corollary on Islam, “God wants us to respect the otherness of the others and accept the uniqueness of each human. That is the whole Quran; the rest is the explanation of this to study it!”

THE BOOK – American Muslim Agenda
Muslims Together Building a Cohesive America

 What is the book about?

You will be pleased to see your vision of America resonate in the book. Even though the title is ”American Muslim Agenda,” it is for all Americans.

One of the purposes in naming the book is for my fellow Americans who have misunderstood Muslims to pick up the book and read, and my fellow Muslims who have misunderstood Islam to take a look the at the pristine Islam that they long for, it is not lost, we have to revive it. Islam is not about ruling or dictating others; it is about living your life and letting others live theirs, one of the 12 strongest values of Islam is freewill that Muslims have forgotten.

Frank Islam has highlighted.

“I am intrigued by the book, particularly the chapter on the Essence of Islam. The great Talmudic sage Rabbi Hillel in the first century BC said, “What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor. That is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation of this—to study it!” Dr. Ghouse responds to Rabbi Hillel with a corollary on Islam, “God wants us to respect the otherness of the others and accept the uniqueness of each human. That is the whole Quran; the rest is the explanation of this—to study it!”

MUSLIMS TOGETHER BUILDING A COHESIVE AMERICA

This book, The American Muslim Agenda, is a primer, a blueprint, a road map for American Muslims to consider. A Muslim is someone who is a conflict mitigater and a goodwill nurturer, following the formula for peaceful societies practiced by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and guided by the Quran. As a community, American Muslims have not developed any concrete plans to extricate themselves out of the chaotic situations, hostility and incessant Islamophobic rhetoric we face. Each time a terrorist acts out, we start praying and wishing that the terrorist not be a Muslim. We are Americans, and we can do better than that. This book paves the way for us to own the mistakes we have made, remedy them, and become fully integrated Americans. There is only one America, and all of us are fully integrated parts of that nation. We need to learn to engage with those who are opposed to us, and I have some good success stories to share on that front. When we start defending America and American values we are in! We become an integral part of American Fabric.

What do the Scholars say about the book?

Bob Roberts, Renowned Evangelical Pastor & Founder of Global.net Author Bold as Love

I’m so grateful for the work of Mike Ghouse and his desire to build bridges.  You will love this book, it’s about how Muslims in America think, and how we should all be connected regardless of faith.  For too long, we’ve ignored the divide between Muslims and Christians and the result is we are prone to believe the worst about one another.  Thanks, Mike for this important book.

Bob Crane, first Muslim US Ambassador

Mike Ghouse’s path-breaking book, American Muslim Agenda, recommends a new agenda in the form of a paradigm shift from the negativism of attacking Islamophobia to the constructive support of America’s founding vision as a model of every world religion’s essence in compassionate justice. This is based on the interfaith search for transcendent truth from both scriptures and natural law in order to translate this wisdom into principles of both ethical value and jurisprudence.  These principles, in turn, are essential to guide the modern think-tanks that shape policy agendas, as well as to inform the voters and legislators who have the practical responsibility to translate the vision of compassionate justice into both societal and institutional reform.  This is what it has always meant to be an American.

Fi Aman Allah,

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar, first Muslim woman scholar to translate the Quran sensitively!
Endorsement for The American Muslim Agenda by Mike Ghouse The author presents a challenge to American Muslims to lose their egos and integrate themselves into being fully Muslim, fully American. They have a Muslim example to follow and it is that of spiritual chivalry (javanmardi, futuwwah).

Spiritual chivalry is that the spiritual warrior constantly strives for the sake of others. It is not seeing yourself as superior to others, to be an enemy of your own soul for the sake of your Lord, to act justly without demanding justice for yourself. Spiritual chivalry is to manifest a beautiful character.

The spiritual warrior (fata or the feminine, fatat) is a person who has a sense of honor, is called ‘he who breaks the idol.’ God Most High has said [in the Quran], ‘We heard a spiritual warrior named Abraham speak of them [the idols Abraham broke]’ [21:20]. And He said, ‘And he (Abraham, the spiritual warrior) made them [the idols] fragments’ [21:60]. The idol of every person is his own ego, so in reality, whoever opposes his own passions is a ‘spiritual warrior’.

Dr. Tariq Cheema, Founder, World Congress of Muslim Philanthropists

“Bold and brilliant Mike Ghouse. He has not just drawn a roadmap for Muslim Americans to contribute to the society meaningfully but highlighted the unique value proposition of Muslims that mainstream America can bank upon to progress. In fragmented America today, the hope lies in the people of faith who believe in social justice and cohesion. This book is an open invitation and a call to action for all those men and women of conscience.”

Dr. Mike Ghouse is a warrior for conflict resolution and a partisan for non-partisan dialogue. He aims to bring all voices to the table of religious pluralism that he sets with the “agenda” in this book.  He and I have shared presentations on panels where the perspective centers on covenantal pluralism, the idea that a God who can treasure one faith community must have the will and power to treasure all moral communities of whatever faith or of no faith.  May his efforts in articulating the agenda for his beloved Muslim community inspire other faith leaders to delve self-critically and responsibly into the resources within their own religions to move beyond tolerance to a loving and robust mutual appreciation.  Our times need his voice and need others to speak out as well.

It is only recently that many courageous scholars and public servants began to tell what the real Islam was. Guru Nanak wrote hundreds of hymns in the Sikh scripture on who is a good Muslim. I am glad to see the recent book by Mike Ghouse. Mike began nearly 15 years ago to set the stage right. He started with a radio show on the world’s religions. I remember my frequent participation there and answering Mike’s piercing questions. Then he contributed hundreds of columns in leading newspapers and magazines. Now, he came up with his book that elucidates the purpose of religion in general and the role of Islam in particular as a member of the community of faiths.  I recommend this book to the Muslim community and their neighbors who are the followers of other religions. In facts, the adherents of other religions might consider Mike’s approach in spreading the sacred words of the founders of their beliefs.

Dr. Zia H Shah MD, Chief Editor of the Muslim Times International.

This beautiful, well-written book, is the next level thinking for the Muslims, many of whom still live in the medieval paradigm of ‘them’ versus ‘us.’ Mike Ghouse is the Messiah for pluralism to pull the Muslims out of a sectarian vision, to a genuine universal brotherhood and sisterhood, befitting our global village, for the 21st century.

It is a must read for every Muslim living in the West, who is desirous of genuine integration, to benefit from all the good that rational and democratic human societies have to offer.  By the same token, it is a must-read for every Westerner, who wants to grasp the genuine peaceful and inclusive vision of true Islam.

The book is a breath of fresh air, away from the political Islam of the Islamists or the Islamophobes, a futuristic vision of coexistence, where we not only tolerate our differences but celebrate them.

Dr. Frank Islam, Philanthropist, and a Scholar, Washington
I am intrigued by the book, particularly the chapter on the Essence of Islam.
The great Talmudic sage Rabbi Hillel in the first century BC said, “What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor. That is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation of this—to study it!” Dr. Ghouse responds to Rabbi Hillel with a corollary on Islam, “God has created us into different races, religions, sizes, colors and other uniqueness’s, respecting the otherness of the other and accepting the God-given uniqueness is the whole Quran and the rest is the explanation of this – to study it.”

Dr. Safi Kaskas, Modern translator of Quran, his translations have been referenced in the book.

Dr. Mike Ghouse is a courageous American Muslim. At a time when Muslims are under attack, he courageously stood tall and walked into the enemy’s camp to talk to them and to explain Islam as he knows it.

His book, American Muslim Agenda, is the summary of his experiences and vision for his Muslim community and America his country. I think we Muslims will be wise to listen to what he is saying and take steps away from our antiquated stands of us and them toward a new Quranic vision of competing in doing what is good.

The future of Muslims in America is what Muslims decide to make of it. In order to be successful, we need to think and really understand the environment in which we live. We also need to understand Islam with fresh eyes on the future, taking in consideration the need to find new solutions to the new problems we are facing without compromising our basic beliefs. This requires courage and resilience. It requires leadership coming from within the Muslim community, with the ability to unite and lead.

Racism and Casteism

I didn’t even know

Our understanding of the world depends on what we are exposed to. I used to think December was cold weather and warm clothes until I went to study in Melbourne, Australia. I realized then that December is summer if you are in the southern hemisphere. What you need there is a t-shirt and not a coat.

Fortunately, understanding hemisphere-based seasonal changes are not so difficult once you have been exposed to them. But what about the things that shape our worldview? While interviewing my friend Ruchi Sharma for the “D Word” series, she told me that even though she knew that the caste system existed, she didn’t know that there was any discrimination against people of the so-called lower castes and Dalits (previously called untouchables). This was largely due to her upbringing in which her parents did not mention caste and also it was not a reference point she had in her neighborhood and in her school.

Similarly, for me when I was growing up, I thought of Diwali, Eid, and Christmas as festivals we celebrated, not as religious festivals per se. It didn’t occur to me that I should celebrate only one or another of these because my mom is Hindu, my dad Muslim and my school which had a big influence on me was run by Christians. We looked forward to all these festivals with exactly the same enthusiasm and I never thought of them as belonging to any specific religions. They all belonged to us.

But our little worlds, no matter how idyllic they may seem, are not the full picture. In the bigger world of university, jobs and marriages, we encounter realities, sometimes harsh realities. For example, Ruchi’s classmates in university were quite clearly in two groups. One group consisted of the so-called upper caste students. Most of them were confident, had stable financial support and many were planning to go to the USA for further studies.

The other group was of the so-called lower castes and many in that group were struggling when it came to confidence and financial resources. Was it just a coincidence or was there anything deeper in it? Ruchi didn’t think of it in caste terms at first because she did not know about casteism. It is only when she read more and was exposed to more ideas that she realized that discrimination over time had led to these differences. Social scientists talk about this as the depletion of social capital.

In other cultures, this looks a little different. For instance, we know a family for many years where the mom is a white American, the dad is brown (from India) and the adopted daughter is Black. While in her home and in her circle of friends, as a small child she was not exposed to racist stereotypes, once she went to school, she was shocked to find that her family was considered weird. For this little girl, her family was the most natural thing in the world. But for many outsides, her family was an oddity – something they did not expect and were ready to call strange.

Realities can be different from what we know or feel. I may be “color blind” but racism is still a deadly reality. The murder of George Floyd and of Breonna Taylor are a sad testament to this reality.

To say that I do not believe in caste, does not mean that casteism is not practiced. Many companies refuse to hire and promote people who do not come from “upper castes” and this discrimination against people from the “lower castes” and Dalit backgrounds is not limited to India alone. Many people reacted with disbelief that Cisco, a corporation in Silicon Valley has been accused of caste discrimination but this is not an isolated case. Similarly to say that various religions are just different ways to connect with God does not mean that communalism (religious sectarianism) is not promoted by political parties and governments. The attack on a Musim man in Gurgaon, India, recently is only the latest in a shamefully long list of religious-hate inspired beatings and lynchings committed by people who believe they have the right to attack someone because they come from another religious background.

It is certainly commendable if we can expunge bigotry and prejudice from our immediate lives. It is beautiful to raise a family where the divides of race, religion and caste are not taught. But that is not enough because our lives do not exist in vacuum and we have a social responsibility to promote humanism in our society. We must therefore go further and remove the ills of racism, casteism and communalism from the concentric circles that our lives are part of. One way to start is by knowing more about things that we ourselves don’t practice but which undoubtedly exist and impact our society negatively. Join us this Saturday, August 8 to understand casteism and how it certainly is not a thing of the past with our webinar featuring Subhash Gatade who is a writer and activist.

You can also hear two interviews Sameer did with brilliant political scientists: Bill Fletcher Junior on racism and Achin Vanaik on religious nationalism. In addition, noted Gandhian Vipin Tripathi’s English interview is also online. Reflections on freedom – India’s Independence Day

Comments Off on Reflections on freedom – India’s Independence Day

This article was first Published on August 16, 2020 at – : https://centerforpluralism.com/reflections-on-freedom-indias-independence-day/

By Mike Ghouse

India is one of the first nations on the earth to practice Pluralism, i.e., respecting the otherness of the others. While the Hindu ethos considers the world as one family, also known as Vasudhaiva Kutumbukum, the Islamic, Christian, and other traditions also subscribe to the idea that we one family originated from a single couple. Together, these values ‘had’ contributed to India’s post-independence political stability. Those values are in peril now.

As a nation, we are bestowed with diversity; the characteristics of the entire world are contained in our country. Collectively we are Adivasis, Atheists, Bahais, Bos, Buddhists, Christians, Dalits, Hindus, Jains, Jewish, Muslims, Sikhs, Tribal, Zoroastrians, and every possible grouping. We are also Brown, Black, White, and Yellow. India ‘was’ indeed God’s own country until recently.

India welcomed people of different faiths and accepted them, it ‘was’ a model of co-existence. Now the divisiveness, discord, and distrust are tearing India apart.

There is not a single Indian who does not love his/her motherland. It is inborn, it is natural, all of us care about our mothers and our motherland. Each one of us wants the best for our country and our people.

When things are not going in the right direction, it is our duty to at least speak up and shape the future, that we would all cherish. We all have to uplift each other, together we will achieve prosperity.

How do we get out of this?

On August 15, 2020, we will be celebrating the 74th Independence Day and we need to determine as a nation if we love our motherland, or is the “Motherland” slogan a stunt for the politicians to pit one against the other to have their gains. Our mother wants all of her children to get along with each other. No mother likes her children to fight.

Lord Krishna, blessings upon him, whose birth celebrations conclude this week, said, whenever adharma (chaos) takes over a people, I will emerge from among you to restore dharma (righteousness). We hope the time has come for that catalytic change.

We are not a dictatorship or a monarchy, where an individual dictates how we behave and what we do. We are a democracy, and we decide how we want our nation to be.

The political leaders are good at coining new phrases, the slogan “sab ka saath, sab ka Vikas aur sab ka Vishwas” (everyone’s cooperation and trust will bring prosperity to all ) is pragmatic and is the right attitude to bring prosperity to the nation. Thus far, it is nothing but a political slogan as the leadership has not brought the Indians together, nor have they earned public trust.

The change begins with leadership.

Prime Minister Modi is demonstrably silent, Goonga, as we call in Hindi. When Asifa was raped, and her body was mutilated – when Tabrez Ansari was brutally murdered, and the video was circulated, and when Dalit girls were raped and hung on trees, Modi did not speak. When a church was vandalized, when attempts were made to evict Sikhs from their land as settlers, and about 120 such incidences, the man shamelessly remained silent. However, when he saw the national outrage, he paid lip service.

If Modi were to speak after each incident, the chaos would subside, the lynching of fellow Indians will stop he can truly earn their trust. All he has to say is I will not tolerate any Indian harassing a fellow Indian, and the violators will be punished severely, and follow through it. But will he? If he does not speak, the mighty Indian ship will start sinking economically and socially – everyone stands to lose.

The change also begins with our children.

As a parent, should you poison your children towards others and screw their lives? The answer should be no, but yet we do it.

A doctor, a son of my friends’ friend, was a guest at my place for a few weeks while attending meetings related to his residency. At the end of his stay – he said, “I wish my parents had not poisoned me against Blacks, Muslims, Christians, and Jews; everything I have heard from them turned out to be false.” He continued, “I have lived in dorms with others, and now with you, they were plain wrong.”

He agreed, when you are biased towards others, it affects your work performance. Your relationship with fellow workers will not be clean as you were poisoned against them. You keep a reserve with your fellow worker, and subconsciously, you don’t trust and share everything with them. That attitude reduces your contribution to your work, and you will not be able to serve your employer with full integrity. And when you go home, you are not giving 100% to your family either, and you are obsessed with your hatred towards the other.

Would you hire someone like that to work for you?

We have to reject the poison injected into us by our parents, teachers, and religious men. It takes away the joy of conflict-free living.  A time will come when the employers will require your social media postings and any history you have of prejudice towards others. Cisco in California has a lawsuit on their hands – the upper cast guys mistreated the “lower cast” (I hate to use that word to describe another human) guy and will pay a penalty. The Medical doctors in India had denied medical service to minorities, we need to introduce laws to ban them from coming to the United States. Who knows, they may not let Christians and Muslims get the right treatment. We may want to introduce laws to fire those who are racist, they are poisoned evil men. We need also to track the individuals who want all the equal rights in America, but shamelessly want to deprive the same to the minorities in India. If they have to pay a penalty most of them will straighten out.

Our attitudes need to re-align

As the cities become cosmopolitan, you will not find a place of work, worship, playground, school, restaurant, theater, and other areas of public gatherings where you will not see people of different faiths, and ethnicities are interacting, working, studying, intermingling, playing and even marrying each other.

These interactions are bound to create conflicts. We must prevent such disputes, so each Indian can live securely with his or her faith, culture, gender, race, sexual orientation, or ethnicity.

God created each one to be a unique being with our thumbprint, eye print, taste buds, religious buds, and DNA, and we have lost that ideal in the last few years. We cannot force others to do what we want without giving them the same right to tell us what they want us to be.

A vast majority of us have heard ‘false’ things about others from our friends, news, social media, or our knowledge of others, and we instantly form opinions about others. As responsible individuals, we must strive to strip stereotyping and build pathways to ensure our society is functioning smoothly.

We need to reassure each other, loudly and clearly, that together as Indians, and we must commit to safeguarding every Indian’s lifestyle, however different that maybe. Together as Indians, we must uphold, protect, defend, and celebrate the values enshrined in our Constitution, a guarantor of the way of life for each one of us.

Let me state this clearly, “My peace and tranquility hinges on the peace of people around me,” and “My safety is tied to the security of people around me.” It behooves me to build societies where all are secure; it guarantees my security and tension free life.

As we learn to respect others’ otherness and accept the God-given uniqueness of each one of us, conflicts fade, and solutions emerge.

Dear Mr. Zuckerberg,

We are contacting you to bring to your attention the mishandling of Facebook Policies in India. One of your key employees, Ms. Ankhi Das, did not allow hate speech by political leaders to be taken down due to her connections with the political party. It is affecting your reputation.

Mr. Zuckerberg, you cannot go wrong if you and your employees follow Lincoln’s wisdom, “With malice towards none.” Justice and fairness will sustain the system and pave the way for moving forward instead of fighting the side battles.

We ask that you consider the following suggestions as they can help you avoid getting sued to by your employees’ reckless actions.

  1. Update hiring policy — Only hire individuals who respect inclusivity and do not bring politics to the workplace. How can that be achieved? Ask each of your current employees to submit social testimonies. If it is a Muslim, ask him/her to provide verifiable testimonials from Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, and others. Likewise, if it is a Hindu, ask him/her to produce similar testimonials from non-Hindus.

2. Remove poisoned employees – Remove the existing bad apples in your basket. A Hindu Doctor was a guest at my place for a few weeks while attending the meetings related to his residency.

Your relationship with fellow workers will not be cordial as you were poisoned against them. You keep a reserve with your fellow workers, and subconsciously, you don’t trust and share everything with them. That attitude reduces your contribution to your work, and you will not be able to serve your employer with full integrity.
